Pat Buchanan

Pat Buchanan

On the September 18th edition of On the Record With Greta Van Susteren , Pat Buchanan defended Romney by saying that President Obama wants to have a "majority of people dependent on government, and when that happens, the party of government wins every election.

He added that if "welfare is like a narcotic" then "Obama is a drug dealer of welfare" who wants to keep people on "permanent dependency" of the government.

Erick Erickson

Erick Erickson

Conservative pundit Erick Erickson of RedState.com compared Romney's candid remarks to a "Chick-Fil-A moment". That is, when Dan Cathy of Chick-Fil-A revealed his anti-gay-marriage views, many liberals swiftly criticized Cathy's intolerance, while Mike Huckabee declared a "Chick-Fil-A day" in support.

The counter-protest, he maintains, a so-called "kiss in", drew only a few people. He goes on:

The Chick-Fil-A controversy animated a whole lot of people. It just turned out that the people it most animated were the people who agreed with Dan Cathy.

So it is, I think, with Mitt Romney’s comments. I think the media and the left have badly misread the American mood on this.

Given that Chick-fil-A reversed its stance on donating to anti-gay groups on the very same day that Erickson made his comparison, we can expect an apology from Romney any day now.

Dick Morris

Dick Morris

In an Op-Ed for Fox News, conservative pundit Dick Morris wrote:

But the fact remains that an Obama reelection would turn the tide psychologically in America from the land of upward mobility through hard work and initiative and toward a country akin to Greece: dependent on government aid in the form of a subsidy and government handouts.

By stating this fundamental truth, albeit off the record, Romney has done a service for which he should be praised not excoriated.

Michelle Malkin

Michelle Malkin

In a tweet, Michelle Malkin praised Romney for disingenuously explaining to voters that "This election is about America's makers vs. America's takers. Romney should NEVER be defensive or apologetic about making that clear."

Neil Cavuto

Neil Cavuto

Fox Pundit Neil Cavuto also subscribes to the claim that half the population "does not pay any taxes at all, it's true!" He also said that you "can't keep the skinning the rich" and you can't keep asking them "to pay their fair share" when the rest do not pay anything at all. Of course, it's not true that the rest do not pay anything at all; 28.3 pay state payroll taxes, and the others are the ones too poor to be taxed, and the elderly.

Still, Cavuto is on board with Romney's remarks. After all, he believes that the government is "glorifying welfare" and the needy are "enslaved to the government."
