Can we finally say the thing we have not said so far?

Last week, a white supremacist shot up a Sikh temple near Milwaukee, killing six people and wounding three. It is considered likely that the shooter mistook the Sikhs, whose men wear beards and turbans, for Muslims. The massacre came a few weeks after a characteristically baseless charge by Michele Bachmann and several other conservative legislators that a Muslim aide to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has ties to Islamic extremism.

The juxtaposition of those two events is emphatically not meant to suggest Bachmann somehow “caused” the Wisconsin rampage. No, the point is that we are looking for terror in all the wrong places. Or, perhaps more accurately, that we are not looking for it in all the right places.

In the almost 20 years since the first attack by Muslim extremists on the World Trade Center, the following things have happened: the bombing of a federal building in Oklahoma City leaves 168 dead and hundreds more injured; one person is killed, more than 100 wounded, in a bombing at the Olympics in Atlanta; seven people are arrested for plotting to attack U.S. military bases; Dr. Barnett Slepian is shot and killed in Amherst, N.Y.; five people die in a shooting spree near Pittsburgh; the FBI arrests a man who tried to buy ingredients for sarin, the deadly nerve gas, from an undercover agent; Dr. George Tiller is shot and killed in Wichita, Kan.; a man and his daughter are killed in their home in Arivaca, Ariz.; a man flies a small plane into a building in Austin, killing himself and one other. And now, this.

These incidents and dozens more comprise a list maintained by the Southern Poverty Law Center in a publication entitled “Terror From the Right: Plots, Conspiracies and Racist Rampages Since Oklahoma City.” What they all have in common is that they spring from motivations (i.e., opposition to taxation, government, immigrants, blacks, gays, abortion and Muslims) that more or less define modern, mainstream, conservatism. So yes, it is time to say the obvious thing no one seems to be saying:

America is under attack by right-wing terrorists.

  • …and the biggest and most dangerous of the right-wing terrorists are now vying for the White House – Romney and Ryan are despicable and it boggles my mind that those planning on voting for them don’t see this….guess ya can’t fix stupid…

    • jojo

You seem to by into the socialist view. Socialism is a philosophy of failure , the creed of ignorance, the gospel of envy, it’s inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery. This is the Obama way. Apparently we the people are suppose to believe or be more angry over what Romney does with his money than what Obama does with ours. With Obama we are and if re-elected will become a dependent society. The real terrorist are not right wing,it is Obama and his czar Cartel destroying this country from within which pits both sides against each other.

      • This is a first class example of the ignorance of the average Republican.
It is a garbled comment, composed from disjointed Republican rhetoric and badly in need of punctuation and spelling correction.

No wonder they are trying to destroy the American education system.

Only a poorly educated, ignorant voter can guarantee the future of the GOP.

        • jojo

Just like a liberal to bully. Since you want punctuation and spelling.

In my encounters with and observations of liberals and democrats, I find that they are mostly Uninformed, Unintelligent, Unenlightened, Uneducated and Unmotivated to get the facts, which can be very frustrating to someone who is politically educated and passionate. And their vote counts just as much as someone who has put the time in to getting informed as to the facts.

I hear it being said that the liberals run most of the media and therefore it will be hard to break through to the general American public and educate them on the facts and best solutions.

So, we have our work cut out for us. And we can’t just stand by and not do it, because there is a heavy price to pay in terms of morals and economics if the democrats continue to take over. Like British politician Edmund Burke said,“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good people to do nothing.

And how has evil been gradually taking over? I think that a lot of it has to do with the fact that good people generally just want to live their lives and not get politically involved … especially if that means encountering the craziness and hostility of liberals

          • WHAAAAAAT!!!!!!!!!!!

          • xxrepublican

I actually find the definition you gave about liberals and democrats a perfect fix for the new republican party. They rely on fear to motivate americans to vote there way. They are not the party that I voted for my entire life. As a republican I am getting all of my political republican friends who make less that 1 million a year to vote for the only person who truley has your back the current president of the united states.

          • jojo

And I find the democrats rely on fear and intimidation. Maybe I should say the very left liberals as I know some democrats who are very disappointed in this president. They are very decent good people who will not be voting for a socialist president. That is the way they see him and then there is one who will vote for him just because. There is One who will vote for Romney and he is black. I guess we will have to agree to disagree.

          • highpckts

Again kettle calling the pot black!!

          • metrognome3830

I fail to see how you are enlightening anyone, JoJo. You call “liberals” bullies (just what is a liberal to you?)

Then you turn bully and state, unequivocally, that “liberals” and “democrats” are MOSTLY Uninformed, Unintelligent, Unenlightened, Uneducated and Unmotivated to get the facts. Is that a statement of fact? Or are you just spouting off! You constantly state that anyone who takes a “liberal” slant is ignorant, stupid, lazy, uninformed and a danger to society. At no time have I seen your informed definition of what a “liberal” is. Only your interpretation, which hardly any “informed” person would accept as fact. “I hear it being said that liberals run most of the media.” Well, now, is that an “informed” statement of fact. Back it up, if you can. With reliable sources, not blather from some hack cable news reporter.

And you speak of your hard work to educate the public on the facts while all the while preaching nothing but your opinion. Educators are certainly allowed to have opinions, but they can’t teach them as facts.

I, for one, hope your career as an educator goes no further than these pages. If you are an educator, which I sincerely doubt, my sympathy to your students.

          • jojo

I fail to see you enlighting anyone either. Not the right or freedom loving Americans. The more government the less freedom, the Obama way. My sympathy goes out to you and your family if they are as closed minded as you seem to be. Seems you preach your opinion with no thought that someone might be right and you wrong. At least I listen to both sides and have agreed with some on the left, very few but I have.

          • grammyjill

OK facts. From Gov. Ducasus of Mass. While Romney was govenor he raised taxes and implamented lots of fees. Infrastructure was a joke, pot holes and rusted bridges. Eighteen billion in debt. Will take Gov. Patrick at least two terms to straighten it out.
Ryan voted for both wars, tarp, auto bailout, medicare part D. All in Bush admin. all unfunded! Surprize to Obama when he got in. First day how the hell do I pay for this? And of course he gets all the blame too.
I’m tired of hearing about how great those do nothing but lie repukes are!

          • metrognome3830

Interesting reply. You jump into the conversation and start calling anyone who disagrees with your opinion uneducated, lazy, stupid, etc. Then when someone calls you on it, you’re offended and respond with more invective and play the victim. You’re a real piece of work. If you want to see close-minded personified, just take a look in your bathroom mirror.

          • jojo

Hum, offended ….no, victim….. No . I would say you liberals are the ones who play the victim part. Most are just bigots , intimidating others , close-minded personified, just take a look in Your mirror. Now we could go thru the name calling , you, me, me you, but it gets us nowhere. You have a point of view and so do I.

          • metrognome3830

Well, you finally said something factual. It gets us nowhere. But you just had to throw in a couple more derogatory terms, didn’t you. I guess that’s just the way you are. Your view is that anyone who disagrees with your view is a socialist. And when you quote dead Prime Ministers, you should cite your source rather than try to claim it as an original quote.

          • jojo

Had you kept reading you might find I had said it came from Winston Churchill in a later comment. And no I don’t think everyone is a socialist that disagrees with me. I just think most are living in the White House.

          • highpckts

Sounds like you are describing the RepublicansLso! So I guess you are the kettle calling the pot black!!

      • CAThinker

Wow are you ever delusional… Right now the history of failure we are struggling with is a Talipublican one; a legacy left to us by the Bush administration, an economy that was in free fall and which was finally arrested by the Obama administration – or were you not paying attention? Hopefully you can understand this concept – not going more negative is positive… and that’s what the economy has done during this administration. The tax cut that Bush gave us all amounted to less than $800 for me and in no way offset the raping we got here in California with the energy deregulation experiment (I would have sent the rebate back, but I needed it to pay for the utility bill). The unnecessary war with Iraq in the name of any one of a number of lies… Bank deregulation… And now the Talipublicans have the audacity to think that we haven’t forgotten, that they should be believed and that life will get better… Geez, you need to pay attention and the first thing you need to do is turn of Fox News – I love that study a little while ago that concluded that Fox News watchers are more misinformed than the uninformed… You are proof…

        • jojo

While I will agree with you very little I will agree with you some on Bush.
You are the one being used and misinformed. Maybe you should watch Fox and get over The fox phobia you have and quit listening to all liberal media outlets. They are the ones lying to you. You are proof of an uninformed liberal.

          • jojo fox news went to court in my state to lie to you! it is a fact and on public record.

          • jojo

Do you have a link? MSNBC and NBC lie all the time. Did they go to court too?

          • I have seen distortions on msnbc because they are the polar opposite of fox but they didn’t go to court to lie like fox
fox Tampa do your own research you lazy con

          • jojo

Not lazy, I was just asking but you as a liberal have to get all huffy over nothing.

          • Landsende

John Stewart showed a clip of several of their “newscasters” admitting they lie. Another one said he was reading from a paper with republican talking points. The only time I watch Faux news is when John Stewart shows them up for the hypocrites they are. And they make it so easy for him. And lest you think he’s biased against Faux news he also goes after other news organizations and politicians when they try to twist the facts. They just don’t make it as easy as Faux news and Rush Limbag. If you want to hear the truth watch The Daily Show with John Stewart.

          • jojo

Then you must know he has praised Fox at times. Very few but he has. I have watched him and like his show. I just don’t believe everything that comes out of his mouth. He does make sense sometimes but like most entertainment shows I take it with a grain of salt.
As far as Rush goes, I listen to him every chance I get. I like him and for the most part is right on target with his views and opinions.

          • highpckts

Limbaugh is a very highly paid entertainer who is laughing all the way to his yacht and his bank!!

          • jojo

Yes he is and he has earned every penny! Nothing wrong with that as the ones on the left do the same. Bill what’s his name on HBO. Guess its ok for them but not Rush or those on the right. Liberal way of thinking, I’ll be tolerant of you as long as it is my point of view.

        • I like the phrase talirepublican, it fits the abode like the right, it fits the right wingers, you may have a new word.

        • grammyjill

I’m on SS. I got a big two hundred fifty rebate. Had to pay it back when I did taxes. Why did they bother?

      • oldtack

If you are going to quote the utterance of someone then give that person credit. You beginning statement “Socialism is a philosophy….” is a quote by Sir Winston Churchill and not the brilliant utterance of jojo. From what sources did you steal the rest of your ideology?

        • jojo

You are right ,it was a quote from Churchill. The rest was all mine.

          • metrognome3830

You didn’t even have to tell us the rest was “all yours.”

          • jojo

Good. I speak my mind and have my opinions just like you though they are of different values.

      • Alaska is the most socialist state in the U.S. They require oil companies to share profits with the citizens and they have a state owned railroad. How is this hurting Alaska?

        • jojo

I don’t see it as a socialist state. N.Y. Is a nanny state . Alaska ,with the high energy cost were able to give back to help the people but a socialist state, no. We have enough natural resources here in America that we could supply ourselves with no help from our enemies abroad, for over 200 years. Why don’t we? Obama, that’s why. Why can’t we buy from Canada instead of china getting it plus it would open up jobs here in the USA. Obama that’s why.

          • grammyjill

Wrong again. Republican congress that won’t do anything, that’s why!!

          • jojo

Wrong again granny. Obama ,Harry Reid, Ms. Airhead Nancy will not work with republicans at all. They say they do or have tried but when their lips are moving they are lying.

          • highpckts

I know you are referring to the Keystone pipeline. The jobs would temporary and when finished only management will be needed! The oil will be moved thru the US at the risk of our environment and still shipped to China or elsewhere! Fracking has been proven to pollute the air and poison the water supply! So what good is our independence from foreign resources when our resources are polluted! By the way, when Bush left office, unemployment was at 11 percent! It’s now 8 per cent!

          • jojo

Our environment has been checked and double checked and it would be just fine. Believe what you want , it would help 20,000 people work. We have natural gas and a lot of it to be tapped into. While I’m not real sure about fracking yet it will not harm the air. Coal is the cleanest it has ever been and cheap. Oil is to be had. Wind mills kill birds , a lot of birds and proven to blow hot air down and destroy the ground below. Solar is costly and a good hail storm will cost you a bundle. When Bush left it was below 8 percent. Look it up.

      • perplejado

As usual you miss the point, that Mr. Pitts is making. There have been numerous attacks against racial groups and others and the source of these attacks have come from conservatively indoctrinated groups. This is a problem which we cannot ignore. Additionally, the media cannot be balanced on this particular fact, because unless you can prove me wrong, I cannot recall of one single event in the last 20 to 40 years in which a left-wing group has caused so much havoc, death and destruction. As to your philosophy with regard to socialism, I find it amusing that the countries where in their citizens rate their level of happiness as the highest on this planet, are the Scandinavian “socialist” countries. Sweden avoided the economic meltdown that the rest of us suffered through, and its economy is scheduled to grow faster than ours. Inc. magazine found that Norway has the largest number of entrepreneurs per capita of any country on this globe. If socialism is such a bankrupt philosophy, then why are these people so happy. Even tiny Costa Rica can provide universal health care from all of its citizens, and has done so since 1950, yet when this nation tries to do the same, individuals such as yourself, stifle the debate and claim that we are on the road to cataclysmic socialism. Every time I hear mindless responses such as the one I have read here, it makes me want to pack my bags and head north or south, where basic human needs are not open to debate and the question was settled long ago that such societies would provide for the most basic human right of all, that to lead a healthy life without fear of economic ruin.

        • CAThinker

Interesting information and refreshing. But don’t flee – if you do that diminishes the population of another critical thinker and hastens the loss of our great nation to the likes of these fascist lemmings… Yes Talipublican Lemmings (I’ll take credit for that one)… All feverishly awaiting to get their next thought and opinion from Faux News…

      • jojo ‘ you have been had. look at the real world, not the bullshit fed to you by the murdoch’s of the world. if you actully belive that the nazi bastards who have run this country into the ground, have any thought of fixing it , i pitty any kids you ever have. they will live in cages, owned by the bush/cheney klan.

        • jojo

If Obama gets re-elected then it will be your kids ,grand kids, great grand kids that will live in the chains of a government that will either feed off the rich until there is no more or work to pay the taxes you will owe the government forever and ever amen!

      • grammyjill

Everyone keeps sayimg that socialism is a really bad thing, but I saw a tv show about copenhagen which is socialist. Need to see a doctor? Sure, no charge. Great medical. What to go to college? Go, no charge. Sure taxes were high, but no one was bitching about it cause they didn’t have to worry about coming up with money for medical, college or nursing homes along with other stuff I can’t remember right now.

        • jojo

Then why do the rich come from other countries to the USA to see a good doctor? By in to the left liberal belief that all is wonderful and you will find socialism never works , never has worked. It will starve and kill you in the end. Once the rich cant pay anymore then what? Where is the money for all these wonderful colleges, hospitals, doctors, going to come from? Doctors are already getting out of the profession because of Obama Care. They don’t want Medicare patients because of all the new paper work, millions more coming into the system, and making less money but having to give more of their time. Keep believing grammyjill that you will be taken care of because that will be the only thing that might keep you stress free and From dying early. Gook luck!

      • highpckts

Check it out! Everytime this country carried a deficit, it was under a Republican President!!

      • Oh brother, I can’t believe this…embarassing

    • the public has been brainwashed by the lush rambo’s and the fact we no longer have a press , or any media unowned by the same nazi’s that brought us the patriot act. why do you think the internet is under so much pressure for cencership and control? it is about the only place the truth is found. the world is not so easly controlled if the people can get to the truth.

But you can numb it with a two by four!

  • willnotgoquietly

Not all conservatives are racist bigots who will encourage terrorism or the threat of terrorism by their failure to condemn it, but I can’t remember a single instance in the last twelve years when one did. Unless, of course, you count the contemptible terrorist attack on the bin Laden family.

  • quasm

    Mr. Pitts;

Was the man who attacked the anti-gay marriage, anti-abortion organization in DC a left-wing terrorist?

    Dik Thurston
    Colorado Springs

    • no he was insane but the folks at the gathering could be considered such as they put their rights above everyone else s individual freedoms thus terrorizing a segment of the population.

    • metrognome3830

Yes! Now, does that make right-wing terrorists ok?

  • jojo

Intelligence and Special Operations forces are furious and frustrated at how President Obama and those in positions of authority have exploited their service for political advantage. Countless leaks, interviews and decisions by the Obama Administration and other government officials have undermined the success of our Intelligence and Special Operations forces and put future missions and personnel at risk.

The unwarranted and dangerous public disclosure of Special Forces Operations is so serious — that for the first time ever — former operators have agreed to risk their reputations and go ‘on the record’ in a special documentary titled “Dishonorable Disclosures.” Its goal is to educate America about serious breaches of security and prevent them from ever happening again.

Thanks Obama for putting our country at risk…….Again! Vote him and Botox Biden out before its to late!

    • so you divert from the story of right wing terrorism and go with the fast and furious which we all know started under the bush administration

jojo… once again, another common sense, America first post. Notice how it’s eating up most of the leftist freak turds in this septic tank called “The Memo”? I love it!

Keep on fighting the good fight. 🙂

      Have a great day!

“Democracy and socialism have nothing in common but one word, equality. But notice the difference: while democracy seeks equality in liberty, socialism seeks equality in restraint and servitude.” – Alexis de Tocqueville

      • metrognome3830

I should know you would support jojo. You probably are aware that I think he is anything but common sensical (is that a word?). The only thing he’s gotten right so far today is the quote from Churchill. Whom, by the way, he did not cite until he was called on it. Very dishonest at best.

        Have a nice day!

        • ObozoMustGo

Hey Metro… he was just talking about the members of our armed forces that know from the inside the consequences of the Obozo Regime letting out valuable intelligence info for Obozo’s political gain. And they want their chance to be heard. What’s wrong with that? NOTHING!!!

Have a great day, my friend!

as William Voegeli put it in Never Enough: America’s Limitless Welfare State, “Liberals don’t want the government to grow indefinitely. They just want it to be bigger than it is right now. The corollary of this stance is liberals’ refusal even to entertain questions on the dimensions of a welfare state that is exactly the right size.”

          • metrognome3830

Yes, you’re right – regarding that post. I just get a bit snippy about some his other posts, which I find offensive and mostly devoid of anything factual.

You have a good day also, OMG!

    • highpckts

Oh and starting an unecessary war that has taken thousands of lives , costs millions of our dollars and has lasted way too long isn’t criminal?? Oh but I forgot it’s okay for a Republican to throw away all that money ( it’s good for the economy) and essentially murder all those military personel !

  • jojo are you on crack? you are buying the right wing talking points that are lies! it amazes me that you guys are so hypocritical calling a sitting president all of the worst things you can and taking words out of context then turning around and saying it the dems doing all of the lies and hate, hypocrites.

  • jojo you are the one buying into fox news lies. they went to court to lie to you and you believe them. just goes to show who is not informed, you!

  • Michael D Muoio

Fear not….if we remain vigilant these fascist will not succeed….period. Also we must call them what they are and the word fascists is a perfect description….use it.

  • Tairepublican, right extremest, againers, you hit it CATthinker you are a thinker.

    • CAThinker

Thanks – but I wish I could take credit for that one. There was someone much more clever than me that came up with it first – I hope I honor that person by continuing to use the term. But it explains and compares Republicans in a single term: like the Taliban, Republicans do what they do in the name of their God (I’m pretty sure the two gods are one and the same [just different guys writing about them]… Like the Taliban, they want you to live according to the tenets of their religion, the only thing saving us from that is the Constitution and they seem to have a wholly different interpretation of that… Like the Taliban, there is no room for opposition… And the list goes on. But thanks for the vote of confidence – feel free to use it and honor the creator of that term.

  • oldtack

I made another comment but I retract that. You wrote a good informative article. Being from different backgrounds and Political leanings I disagree with most of your article . But – to me – that is what make our Country unique and great. I have been in Countries where this is not permitted.

    Have a nice day

    • jojo

Thanks tack, hope you have a great weekend coming up.

  • ObozoMustGo

Lenny Pitts… I’ve been doing my best to avoid reading your racist drivel lately, but this one deserves a quick nod to YOUR UTTERLY UNRESTRAINED HYPOCRISY!!!!! You’re so full of sheet that it makes me almost think you must be laughing while writing this article and thinking of all the useful idiots in here that will actually believe your comedic fantasy to be true. Either that or you’re just as much as a useful idiot and fool as the rest of the morons that agree with your clap trap. Unfortunately, I’m certain it’s the latter.

Where is The Memo talking about the gay activist terrorist that walked into the Family Research Council and shouted that he disagreed with their politics as he pulled out his weapon to start firing all over the place? Thank God he was subdued and the security guard that was shot will be OK. But you scumbags on the left are so quick to BASELESSLY start blaming the Tea Party before the victims hearts have stopped beating that your stunned silence on this one is screaming:

And your obvious silence is so friggin loud that no one can think anything but the fact that you are HYPOCRITES!!!!. Why is The Memo, and the rest of your leftist freak media scum comrades, ignoring the fact that the shooter stated he was doing it for political reasons? Why? Because you are HYPOCRITES!!! That’s why. Witness the pathetic headline for the Washington ComPost last evening: “Police: Suspect disagreed with Family Research Council.” Huhh? The leftist freak shot someone and sought to murder many. “Disagreed” with someone? You people are absolute idiots!

And how dare you, Lenny, you racist hypocrite, call the actions of people who clearly are animals that go into theaters or temples and shoot innocents “right wing terrorists” when you won’t even call the Muslim killer at Fort Hood a terrorist? Instead, the useful idiots in the Obozo Regime, and their lap dogs in the media, (that’s you Lenny) call it “work place violence”. This despite that fact that the killer called out “allahu akbar” as he was killing his fellow soldiers. What kind of fool are you? What kind of major HYPOCRITE are you, Lenny? I’ll tell you what kind you are. The kind that is so spineless and feckless that you sacrifice your professional credibilty with this kind of drivel, all because you are committed to the leftist ideology more than you are committed to intellectual honesty and professionalism.

The truly frightening thing about American politics today is that the vast majority of the print and TV media have forgone their professional integrity for the ideology of the left. The media are supposed to be the ones that give BOTH political sides a hard time. You’re supposed to represent the people’s interest in the truth, NOT a particular party or ideology. The fact is that I don’t mind that the entire media, save Fox, are leftist and support those ideologies. What I do mind is that you lie and refuse to admit what you are, couching your stories and productions as though you are objective.

Clearly, your ideology is much more important than your professional integrity. Sad!!!

    Have a nice day!

“The trouble with our Liberal friends is not that they’re ignorant; it’s just that they know so much that isn’t so.” – Ronald Reagan

    • jojo

Great piece! It is so hard to understand the brain of a liberal? 🙂

  • the bush klan is directly responcable for 9/11 as well as most domestic attacks in the last 40 years. the entire family should be prosicuted. treason, murder conspiracy to destroy democracy are only the tip of the iceburg. go back to prescott bush and follow the twists, and turds of the klan bush. it was all to shove the patriot act down our throats, and finish off the middle class.

  • I’m afraid we are going to continue to see alot more murders committed by radical Christians than by radical Muslims, in our country. For one thing, as the article mentioned, there is now a stereotype of what a terrorist looks like and what religion they are. Another issue is the new form of hate media, that is aired around the clock and can be fuel for someone who is already unstable and paranoid of our government. We are seeing in this election, that roughly 50% of our population supports maybe the most radical conservative views and the politicians that they feel will represent them. Government is now seen as more evil than the corrupt corporations that use their wealth and power to get these very anti-regulation and anti-income tax candidates elected, to serve their own interests and to insure that their wealth and power are not inhibited by laws that may give more power back to the everyday, middle-class working Americans. What is especially evil, is their use of Christianity to support their intolerance, lies and hatred, by making people fear that the Government is trying to force God out of their lives. This is as important a Presidential election as their has been in our history, as the extremism of the GOP will push any gains we have had in civil and women’s rights, protecting our environment and providing as level of a playing field, as possible, for those who are willing to work hard to achieve what little is left of the American Dream.

Ignorance is not bliss; it is a gop (greed over people) voter. One of the nra, american taliban, right wing terrorists is nut job nugent, who at any other time in history would have been arrested for what he said about killing President Obama.

  • The right wing terror groups don’t like it when they are talked about. Perhaps bringing up the killings, lies, and other deceptions makes them very uncomfortable. They would be the first to decry any call to use “second amendment solutions by the moderate to left to change their behavior. Both sides need to realize that extremism on ether side is a drag on our country. OUR COUNTRY, a term that embraces them and us and every one in between.

You mean America under assault by Left Wing SchutzStaffel? Like the attempted murders at the Focus on the Family center by an angry ho-mo? RESIST WE MUCH.
