Arizona Sheriff Facing Long Odds After Gay Outing

February 20th, 2012 6:41 am Associated Press

FLORENCE, Ariz. (AP) — Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu built a reputation as a rising, conservative star by taking a hardline stance against illegal immigration, attacking the Obama administration and appearing alongside Sen. John McCain in a 2010 re-election ad in which McCain urged federal officials to just “complete the danged fence.”

But, on Saturday, Babeu’s conservative image took a beating as he was forced to confirm publicly that he is gay and was involved in a relationship with a Mexican immigrant who claims the sheriff threatened to have him deported if he revealed their relationship.

Well at least he has the intestinal fortitude to come out of the closet even if he is a GOP candidate for office and of course he got caught. With that said his political future is toast with the GOP since they are homophobic by nature but not by personal actions or at least from what the public has heard and seen over the years. It still amazes me how the rank and file GOP voters still adhere to their zero tolerance but yet embrace the hypocricy demonstrated by their political leaders. It is a good thing not to be a GOP.

    • edwlh

Yes, the Democrats welcome in the moral degenerates. That is a big part of their base. Peace to all.

  • Howz 1

All the Republican canidates that sought his endorsement are now in hiding about it. It also goes to show how much the religious right owns the social thought process of the Republican party. If they were really about protection of rights like they always tout, they would champion same sex marriage. Because of fears that the founders had about restriction of liberty by religious groups they created a seperation of Church and state. Too bad all these Tea Party people who run around holding the constitution like Mao’s little red book, and evangelicals, don’t have a clue about what it says.

    • edwlh

There is nothing in the Constitution about “seperation of Church & State”. Read it, the government can’t have a state religion, like they do in England. Peace to all.

  • EATHERICH

totally typical of todays political whore

  • tutidiez

This is just one more scandalous news from the hypocrisy of the Republicans that lavish so much about their high moral standards, the more they preach against gays and contraceptives the biggest is the skeleton in their closet, I can wait until “Saint Santorum” Skeleton starts knocking on his closet door to come out.

    • edwlh

Wow, such hateful speech. What is in your closet?

  • Sacaton Sam

When forced to “Come Out of the Closet” — the Good Gay Sheriff stepped up.
Long after his election campaign for Sheriff and in the midst of a congressional election race — he “comes out.”
Back in the 1920s and 30s, City Marshall Ace Reed and Ed Stringer were the law.
No jail, so they “hogtied” Saturday Night drunks with arms and legs around poles and posts. The drunks’ friends knew to leave the arestees alone. “Mess with one of those prisoners” Ace and Ed would shoot you.
Even in retirement, when the major and a jail trustee crew arrived on the street in front of Ed’s home on a street-straightening project to cut down a big Palos Verde tree — Ed sat there with his rifle, promising to shoot the first person to touch “his tree.” In 1966, Ed was gone, the tree stood.
    How times have changed.

Duh!! Aren’t all powerful republicans involved in one or more “closet” features, like gayness, incest, hiring illegals, abortions, thievery, kickbacks, lying, cheating on their spouses, intimidation and coersion, bigotry, discrimination, insider trading, and any number of other “Christian values”????

    • edwlh

No, I believe you are speaking of the Democrats here. Cheating = Kennedy, Clinton, Edwards. Gayness = Barney Frank. etc. Peace to all.

  • Kingofnotsomuch

The GOP just wants everybody to do as they say,not as they do.The Rep. candidates are bunch of jokes, even the party doesn’t want to endorse any of them. All have too much baggage. It’s OK for them to pay less percentage rate than the average American middle class tax payer. All the GOP are very greedy. It’s OK the things that they want to make law ,as long as they don’t have to abide by them.Better that everybody else has to do as they say not as the GOP does.

  • C Jay Latham

They talk the Talk but they can not walk the walk,it is propaganda any way you look at it. Kind like Tok O Rose if you are old enough to remember, we called it Propaganda then and it Republican propaganda to day. They hide behind the Religious right the have did that during the Bush 8 years in office. when will theis people wake up.They are a wolf in sheep clothing.Remember Clash Clay back in the 70es when he went to jail for war was against hes Religan. yep you are right it was a Republican adminastration under Richard Nickson.
They wont to do away with aboration, and wont to do away with the programs to support the little fellows when they come in to this world unwanted or borned in to poverty to shift for them self. Like I said they are a bunch of wolfs in Sheep clothing. I am 81 years old have seen lots of Presidents come and go, but never have there been a President come in to power with what Oboma was handed, No one Preaident is going to pull us out of this in 4 or 8 years for that matter.but he is doing a good job with he got to work with the Republicans Party tht puts party befor our well beings.

Perhaps if you learned to spell, and used proper grammer, we could all understand what you are saying. Peace to all.

  • liberal in heart and mind

I’ll say one thing for him, he’s got cojones! But the Dems will use this for all it’s worth, Romney must have been a little embarrassed, but overall, it will just be a blip on the screen.

  • PatrickHenry

Most Republicans would not agree with this Sheriff’s behavior. Most Republicans would understand the failings of human beings and leave it at that. Seems like all the tolerant “Democrats” want to lump ALL Republicans. I would say the Democrat Party is the Party that “Knows what’s best for all.” I agree with Arpaio, and not get involved, it’s up to Babeu to face his issues.

  • zacb

Typical of most Politicians to be so hypercritical. They play off what people want to hear and go off and do what they want, til they get caught. Politics is such a game now, they all say what you want to hear to get in office and then when they do get in; what really changes? Nothing! I’m so sick of hearing of all the wrong that politicians do and get away with. It doesn’t matter what party they are in, they just feed off each other, when election time comes and after the election. Back to being buddies, while alot of the public will continue with the hate that has been instilled.Doesn’t matter which party you’re in. one side will make up lies about the other and the other side will make up lies about them and just depends on how twisted or believable it was said…..Here’s an idea lets make it that a politician would have to drop out of politics if they are caught lying or twisting a story about another candidate. If that happened I’m afraid we wouldn’t have any politicians. Lets spin the wheel and hope for the best. God bless America!

  • Bill Fultz

I have no problem with the guy being gay, but… Why do Repukes have to hide who they really are? The rule seems to be the more a given Repuke opposes certain behaviors, the more likely that person engages in those very same behaviors. The GOP (Goobers On Parade) Party rides again!

  • onebaud

Maybe he is not gay. Maybe he just has a wide stance. How close was he to McCain? How many Republicans does it take to go to the bathroom? TWO!

  • twinkie1cat

There is no man more homophobic nor more pitiful that a closeted gay man, except possibly a closeted, homophobic, Republican gay man. If the people elected him once and believe in his values, though they are, by their very definition warped, then they might forgive him for being gay. But if he keeps covering himself with dirt there is no chance. Conservatives always think they have to hide who they are unless they exactly fit the straw man the GOP has erected. There are, unfortunately, many gay Republicans just like there are Republican African-Americans. Both, I consider traitors to their own people, but more so the gays since the GOP covers up its racism with conservatism. They come right out and say they hate gay peole even though it is anti-Christian while trying to court fundamentalist Christians. The sheriff needs to come out and say it: Yeah, I am gay. I was born that way and I cannot change that fact. But I am still a conservative bigot just like I was before you all found out. I have the same values. I am the same person.

By the way, there is a state legislator in Georgia who was also outed by his ex partner. He is a Democrat and still surviving. He said it was a relief to finally be able to be open. Georgia also has two openly lesbian state legislators.

    • edwlh

We conservatives don’t hate the sinner, we hate the sin. perhaps you should try this, it would be a new way of looking at things for you. Peace to all.
