My 3-year-old recognizes President Obama — or “O-ba-na,” as she calls him. She can’t tell you what he does, but, perhaps because of her mom’s TV news viewing, she associates him with the U.S. flag and military rituals.

She also recognizes the first lady and their two lovely daughters. (She further associates the president with a certain 1960s hit by R&B singer Al Green, likely a byproduct of her mom’s YouTube preferences.)

The very fact that there are still those who refuse to see Black Americans as anything but a drain on society, for me, is a reason to keep Black History Month. But the larger reason is the same reason it became necessary in the first place: the contributions of black people to build and keep this country are overlooked everyday in history classes across the nation. Until we can be assured that the stories of ALL AMERICANS, black, white, red, brown, yellow, whatever, are being told in our nations classrooms, we cannot let the majority alone decide what is and is not important in American history. Instead of getting rid of it, how about giving 12 races one month. I don’t know nearly enough about what Latinos, Asians, American Indians have contributed to make this nation great. Let’s move the spotlight around and let everyone shine, instead of shutting it off.

Bringing up racism everytime the Republican Party disagrees with Obama’s socialist policies & Big Spending will get this nation nowhere. People will embrace black candidates if they are more mainstream and the Republican Party does have many good black leaders that also disagree with the direction & policies Obama has taken this country. I believe many liberal Federal policies have kept blacks from thinking of themselves as just Americans and not as victims. There are also many Conservative black Americans juch as Clarence Thomas, Condoleeza Rice, Hermain Cain, Allen West, Carol Swain, Starr, Sowell, Colin Powell(moderate), and many more. I think having special months for different races divide more than assimilate, but of course teach in our classrooms the contributions of all Americans, as long as they are here Legally, after all, Millions of Illegals hurt all Americans in unemployment, low wages, high health care & school costs, crime, etc. We can’t ignore reality either.

The history of this nation includes all races and all sorts of actions that need to be brought to light. And when they are brought to light kids can think about why we have turned out the way we have. Being white and going to a principally white suburban school, I had limited contact with blacks. One of my best friends for part of my high school years was black and we used to play the parts of the “I Spy” characters. We thought we were quite the comedy team.
But when I went home I was faced with parents that were church goers, but really did not act out what their religion taught. My dad was the principal culprit as he would use derogatory language toward black people frequently. My mother loved everybody. This type of home was not atypical.
I would agree that we need to teach the behavior at home and in schools that we want to see in everyone and we need to do it all year. People need to know that the original constitution was a compromise. Since then we, as a country, have corrected certain errors in the document. And as the country grows and changes racially, ethnically and religiously the constitution will change and become more inclusive and forgiving for everyone. And, I would hope, it would force thinking to change for many with prejudices and other types of intolerance.
People think based on what they learn. They learn at home and in schools. Both places need to improve and get the same story of tolerance out into the open along with the historical facts. We’re all in this together. We can’t split up as this would be a civil war worse than the last one. And different states should not have different standards for basic human rights. For a child it all starts in the home with copying and then the child really learns to think in school. In my ideal America we would be teaching the same basic “human” qualities at home and in schools. I leave out churches as they have too many “beliefs” and I don’t believe in many of those. Some, but not many.

“Bringing up racism everytime the Republican Party disagrees with Obama’s socialist policies & Big Spending will get this nation nowhere.”

If the reasons for disagreement are racist, and they often are, then bringing up racism is appropriate. I live in a city that once had an AVOWED socialist Mayor (not accused but admitted). The City not only continued to exist but Prospered under his administration, which proves to me that a belief in socialism is not the bad thing you make it out to be. Further if you bother to look you will find that the Republican Party advocates as much spending as the Democratic party does, just on different things.

” People will embrace black candidates if they are more mainstream and the Republican Party does have many good black leaders that also disagree with the direction & policies Obama has taken this country. Most Black People Believe ( myself included ) that it shouldn’t be necessary for me to have to act White ( be more mainstream )to succeed in this Nation. There are, of course, Blacks that feel the opposite is true (as is their right)but you will notice that they aren’t considered Republican Leaders and only one of them attempted to run for President. He was widely considered to just be the Republican Parties Black token candidate. Now Condoleeza would have been a much better choice,(if you would have been serious) at least there was a strong possibility that she could win.

“I think having special months for different races divide more than assimilate”

I think that each race has important cultural differences that should NOT be eradicated. Assimilation can be achieved with these differences intact if everybody practices what is called TOLERANCE. Everybody should not be forced to be the same as the next guy, it is these DIFFERENCES that has made our Country Great.

Finally the fact that this country is full of illegals is the fault of the American People not the Government. The State of Alabama was recently found to have from 70,00 to 140,000 illegals employed there. It’s been ILLEGAL to hire an illegal for work in this country since 1952. That law was being willfully broken by American Citizens for over 40 years while the State looked the other way. Multiply those numbers by, let’s say 10 (States) and it’s easy to see where our illegal alien problem came from.
