In my opinion, the Republican opposition to immigration reform goes well beyond ideology and partisanship. The truth is that illegal immigrants are the reason we can buy produce and other goods and services at prices that are considerably lower than in other industrialized nations. The agricultural sector is not obligated to pay the same minimum wage that applies to other sectors of our economy. Farm hands only make a little over $3 an hour, and since illegals are not protected by the law, they don't even make that much. The agribusiness, which donate large amounts of money to the GOP, profits from this circumstance and opposes any kind of immigration reform that would change the status quo. We, as consumers benefit from cheap produce and other items, and the U.S. economy benefits from low inflation. If President Obama is re-elected and he pursues immigration reform, which I believe he will, he will face the same opposition he encountered when he championed ACA.
For the GOP this issue has nothing to do with the law or fairness, it is all about money.

The first question anyone should ask regarding comprehensive immigration reform is how do we pay for it? The amnesty, which is essentially what "reform" will be, law passed in 1986 required the feds to set up a complete satellite bureaucracy of legalization offices and hire thousands of temporary workers to process the applications for, at that time, approximately 3 million people. The number of people who might be eligible this time around is considerably higher. The failure of the amnesty of the eighties was the unwillingness of congress and various administrations to walk their talk when it came to enforcement. This was particularly evident when it came to enforcing the laws against employers and hiring undocumented aliens. Once it became clear enforcement was not a priority the employer provisions of the law became meaningless. I think some form of reform is due. I think the first step would be to simplify the legal immigration system so that those who respect the laws of the country to wait in line for years and jump through a byzantine maze of government hoops can get their opportunity. It should also be easier for students, in some fields, to adjust their status to that of permanent resident after graduation. Once the legal system is addressed then something can be done to address the situation of those here illegally. Any reform will be doomed to failure if it is not coupled with strict enforcement so that everyone, employers, aliens congress and the like, know that the only way to get to this country is by following the law. Absent that, we will pass another law and twenty five years down the road, politicians will be talking again about the need for immigration reform.

Once again he will avoid making the economy his primary concern simply because he hasn't a clue what to do and that anything he might do correctly would infer with his goal of more government dependency. As long as he doesn't focus on letting business create a stronger economy, he doesn't have to face the porous border problem. It will be only drug dealers, gangs and people looking for welfare coming across since there will be no jobs.
