And now…. The REAL Cartoon of the Day!

    Have a nice day!

“The accumulation of all powers, legislative, executive, and judiciary, in the same hands, whether of a one, a few, or many, and whether hereditary, self-appointed, or elective, may justly be pronounced the very definition of tyranny.” – James Madison

I wonder if the slaves, that James Madison owned understood what tyranny meant.

      • ObozoMustGo

Vern, you’re exactly correct. No one ever said the founders themselves were perfect men. However, it is known that Madison was exceptionally good to his slaves. In Virginia at the time, slave ownership was part of the culture. However, it is also widely known that Madison was in favor of abolishment of slavery in the Constitution as many founders were at the time. But the formation of the Union could not have been accomplished if that was the case. The keeping of slavery in the south was a compromise. Both he and Washington freed their slaves at their deaths and gave them inheritances.

I have asked you this before, but you did not answer me. Why was the 3/5 rule put in the Constitution? The real reason was because the south wanted slaves to count as 1 man, 1 vote. This would have given them too much power that did not reflect the fact that slaves could not vote. The north knew this. So they took away the south’s over representation with this compromise. It was the growth in population in the industrial north that enabled the power shift necessary to lead to the abolishment of slavery. That and at least 300,000 white Americans willing to die for the freedom of their brothers, regardless of skin color.

The bottom line is that our union did not come together in perfection. It came together in compromise. But the principles and ideals established in the Constitution laid the groundwork for the ultimate abolishment of slavery, which was accomplished by the Republican party by the way. It is the IDEA of America that is worthy of pursuit. Not that we have ever been perfect. Lord knows we have not. But the pursuit of freedom, liberty, and individual sovereignty within the confines of a rule of law under the Constitution IS the pursuit of perfection in human existence within a civil society.

The growth in power of the Federal government with ever increasing taxation, regulations, and controls over individuals, their private property, and their businesses is exactly the sort of tyranny that is contrary to the principles of our Constitution.

        Have a nice day, Vern!

“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.” – C. S. Lewis

I have found out the purpose of the little attachment to the top of the Pope’s white skullcap. It is, apparently, a fuse, evidenced by the fact that when God heard of the Pope’s decision to resign, He struck the Vatican with a bolt of lightning in an attempt to ignite the fuse. Amazing the He failed.

If he spent the rest of his life changing bed-pans in military hospitals for all the life-long cripples whom he sent to Iraq with his loud mouth he would not even begin to make up for the pain and loss resulting in American kids sent to “get Sadam” to make Iraq safe for the theft of their oil. My dead cat is more Catholic than he pretends to be.

Rick Santorum is not a cardinal, but he is a good man, and if he were our president right now, we would be in a lot better hands.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-Greisler/100001484681620 Michael Greisler

I really don’t think he’s a nice or moral person. but he does have religious convictions and I don’t think they mirror the Catholic church’s teachings.
