GREENWICH, Conn. — Since the 2010 elections, the activism of newly empowered conservative and Republican state legislatures has gained national attention with their wars on public employee unions, additional restrictions on abortion, and new barriers to voting.

Against this backdrop, the little state of Connecticut has loomed as a large progressive exception. Last year, it became the first state to require employers to grant paid sick leave. It also enacted a law granting in-state tuition to students whose parents brought them to the United States illegally as young children.

And last week, Connecticut Gov. Dan Malloy signed a law repealing the state’s death penalty. There are now 17 states without capital punishment, Illinois having joined the ranks last year. What happened in Connecticut brings home the flaw in seeing everything that has happened in the states since the midterm vote as embodying a steady shift rightward.

Where they hold power, progressives have also been using their states as laboratories, and Malloy is part of an impressive group of mostly smaller-state Democratic governors who have combined a moderate, business-friendly style with progressive policymaking. Their ranks include, among others, Govs. Jack Markell in Delaware, Martin O’Malley in Maryland, John Hickenlooper in Colorado, Deval Patrick in Massachusetts and outgoing Gov. John Lynch in New Hampshire.

After the 2012 election, a key front in the battle for America’s political future will involve how the various left and right experiments in the states are judged. Aggressive conservatives such as Govs. Scott Walker in Wisconsin and John Kasich in Ohio are in the headlines now, and the recall Walker faces will keep him there for a while. But there will be a quieter and more comprehensive reckoning down the road.

Part of this reckoning will be a remarkable pivot in the politics of the death penalty, the premier issue on which an overwhelming consensus favoring what’s taken to be the conservative side has begun to crumble.

Hooray for Gov. Malloy and the state of Connecticut. This is really a contrast with my home state Alabama.

  • ObozoMustGo

Looks like CT is in competition to see who can be dumbest state in the union. NY and Mass are pretty stupid, too. I still think the dumbest state in the union is CA, hands down. That place is the land of fuits and nuts and freaks and people dumb enough to actually vote for a colossal moron like Nancy Piglosi. Sheesh… now THAT’S stupid!

    Have a nice day!

    • MRD1056

You really are a moron please get off this site your ignorance is painful!!!!

  • ObozoMustGo

One other thing….. CT is abolishing the death penalty for convicted criminals, but keeps the death penalty for innocent unborn people. Hmmmmm…. Kill ’em before they’ve done anything wrong, but let ’em live after they have proven themselves unworthy to live amongst us. That’s “logic” for you in leftist nutjob world!

    Have a nice day!

    • ckibbey80

If you feel so strongly, then how about you taking a few of the unwanted ” throw away ” children and raise them from cradle to grave? No, you won’t do that…that is the usual GOP response. “I didn’t take them to raise…it is not my problem…I want all the services, but, I want some one else to pay for them…”

Also, the abolishing of the death penalty in CT does NOT get the people on death row now, off the “hook”, it is for future cases only.

You show true who the dumb bell is!

      • ObozoMustGo

There are more people that want to adopt babies than you can imagine. Why do so many Americans go abroad to adopt? Why is it so difficult to adopt here? Because you leftist nutjobs would rather kill the unborn than to allow them to go to families. And it’s the leftist nutjobs that are the roadblocks to adoption.

In thinking about you leftist nutjobs’ pro-abortion policies, I may have changed my mind about abortion….. somewhat. Why dont we just strongly encourage ONLY liberals/leftists/socialists/progressives to have as many abortions as they can/want? This may be a good idea. All future leftists are murdered in the womb. Over time, you kill yourselves off and us sane, conservative people wont have to deal with your kind any more. Hmmmm… good idea? NOT! There’s always ways to reform and cure even the most hardcore leftist nutjob. No murder of the unborn, even future leftists!

By the way, kibs, you dont take care of children “cradle to grave.” The idea is to raise them to be self sufficient so they can take care of themselves. But I know that concept is foreign to you leftist nutjobs!

        Have a nice day!

          There are two issues here:

Being PRO-CHOICE is about REDUCING the need for abortion and maintaining the right for a woman to FREELY choose. It’s NOT about being PRO- abortion!! It’s about educating in the proper use of birth control so that abortion is not something a woman woud have to consider.

Roe vs Wade is legitate and it will remain so. Americans- both on the left and right- overwhelmingly agree that a woman should have access to freely chosen, medically safe abortion. Quit bitching about it and get over it!

Abortion doesn’t just go away because it’s illegal. Historically, women in every society on earch have sought a way to terminate an unwanted pregnancies. In some tribes in third world countries, women know of plants that have properties that if ingested, will abort a fetus. They do this for a variety of reasons, but mostly for survival when food is scarce and to limit the number of children they can care for. In more industrialized nations where medically safe abortion procedures are not available, women still seek termination of pregnancy. However, these procedures are being performed by quacks and back alley abortionists. Their methods are quite freightening and even barbaric. If women survive these illegal and unsafe procedures they are at very high risk of suffering complicated illnesses, permanent injury including sterilization and DEATH. Women who die as a result of these illegal procedures also take with them the unborn that you only seem to care about.
You want to DICTATE and LEGISLATE to force your will upon ALL WOMEN, which is wrong. This is not any issue that concerns you as a man. What a woman does with her body is NO man’s right to dictate. If you don’t believe in abortion, then make sure the women that YOU have direct control of in your life don’t have abortions.

          Adoption the answer? Hardly.

The babies that are highest demand for adoption are healty caucasian babies with no evidence of disabilities, and born to a mother who was not drug addicted. Many children are born every day to people who are not capable of raising them but do anyway because they have the right to keep their children if they choose. For those parents who fail, these kids are sent into our woefully under-supported and financially starved foster systems. Foster parents in my state used to receive financial assistance for their care but not now. Many children NEVER get adopted while being bounced around in the foster system. Prospective parents who wish to adopt rarely see foster kids as their futures prospective children. The older a child is, the less likely that child is to be adopted.

Love and support of one’s children IS “cradle to the grave,” you idiot!!! A parent’s love and support isn’t a left or right wing issue! A parent should provide love and support to their children as they grow and even into adulthood. My children will always be my children, period. The definition of “support” changes as a child grows but you never stop supporting them.

My suggestion to you, BOZO, is to stay out of womens’ reproductive rights. RESPECT THE RIGHT AND REDUCE THE NEED.

          • ObozoMustGo

Such a long diatribe to say that you support murdering innocent people inside their mother’s womb. While you act all high and mighty and compassionate, your compassion stops at the baby, I suppose.

While you leftist nutjobs always cite the most heart-wrenching examples (which are usually the most rare in reality) the truth is that your pie in the sky “educate” and “reduce the need” bullsheet have done NOTHING but reduce the costs and increase the number of abortions as birth control. Look it up. In NY alone, more black babies are aborted than are actually born each year. The most dangerous place to be black is clearly in the mothers womb. Margaret Sanger, founder of PP, is finally getting her wish for the creation of Planned Parenthood… the destruction of blacks in America. She was a racist pig and that’s why she founded PP. Look it up. It’s true!

As to supporting your children…. you’re arguing semantics, joy. We share the same belief here about “supporting” our kids, in general, I believe.

            Have a nice day, joy!

          • joyscarbo

The only RACIST is YOU!! Your right-wing, conservative, so-called “christian,” PHONY stats are manufactured by the murdering PRO-LIFERS, who are terrorists, plain and simple. You’re also perpetrating that black females have the most abortions? Get the REAL facts straight, BOZO!!! Abortion isn’t a racial issue, it’s a womens’ issue. But then I don’t expect anything less from a SEXIST PIG, too!

Get the hell out of EVERY WOMAN’S UTERUS, BOZO!!!!

          • ObozoMustGo

Joy, enlarge the image below. It’s a picture of Margaret Sanger speaking to the Women’s group of the KKK. You wont like it, but it’s right there documented in the newspaper. Planned Parenthood’s intended purpose was to rid America of “those blacks”.

Here is a quote from her own biography:

“I accepted an invitation to talk to the women’s branch of the Ku Klux Klan…I saw through the door dim figures parading with banners and illuminated crosses…I was escorted to the platform, was introduced, and began to speak…In the end, through simple illustrations I believed I had accomplished my purpose. A dozen invitations to speak to similar groups were proffered.” (Margaret Sanger: An Autobiography, P.366)

Sorry to bring these facts to light, Joy, but dont be mad at me. I’m just the messenger.

            Have a nice day!

          • ObozoMustGo

Since you love murdering babies so much, joy, maybe you and Margaret Sanger have lots in common. Here’s another quote of hers..

“We should hire three or four colored ministers, preferably with
social-service backgrounds, and with engaging personalities. The most
successful educational approach to the Negro is through a religious appeal.
We don’t want the word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro
population, and the minister is the man who can straighten out that idea if
it ever occurs to any of their more rebellious members.”
            — Margaret Sanger’s December 19, 1939 letter to Dr. Clarence Gamble, 255
Adams Street, Milton, Massachusetts. Original source: Sophia Smith
Collection, Smith College, North Hampton, Massachusetts. Also described in
Linda Gordon’s Woman’s Body, Woman’s Right: A Social History of Birth
Control in America . New York: Grossman Publishers, 1976.

I’m not going to respond to a comment made by this woman’s statement from 1916. This is 2012 and this racially vile statement is NOT representative of Planned Parenthood. That’s how absolutely DESPARATE you Pro-lifers are- to bring up the comments of a racist to somehow suggest that this has anything to do with today. My best friend’s mother served as a board member to Planned Parenthood and she’s a PhD and African American!!! Planned Parenthood served me well when I was a young woman with no-cost birth control and pap smears to ensure my female health. There is no PRO ABORTION literature or discussions. I was educated on all choices of birth control and how they are responsibly used. Mind you, this was back the late 1970’s- 1980’s in when you FREAKS and TERRORISTS weren’t picketing outside and harrassing women as they go in to seek care. I support Planned Parenthood and will continue to do everything in my power to ensure that it remains funded and supported. WHETHER YOU AND YOUR PRO-LIFER TERRORISTS LIKE IT OR NOT.

          • ObozoMustGo

Joy, the comment was made because Sanger knew that she had to sneak around her real intents by enlisting the black reverends’ help. She did a good job of fooling black people at the time. You just dont like the truth.

What about this comment, Joy. Will you respond to this one?

“Our failure to segregate morons who are increasing and multiplying
… demonstrates our foolhardy and extravagant sentimentalism …
[Philanthropists] encourage the healthier and more normal sections of the
world to shoulder the burden of unthinking and indiscriminate fecundity of
others; which brings with it, as I think the reader must agree, a dead
weight of human waste. Instead of decreasing and aiming to eliminate the
stocks that are most detrimental to the future of the race and the world,
it tends to render them to a menacing degree dominant … We are paying
for, and even submitting to, the dictates of an ever-increasing,
unceasingly spawning class of human beings who never should have been born
            at all.”
            — Margaret Sanger. The Pivot of Civilization , 1922. Chapter on “The
Cruelty of Charity,” pages 116, 122, and 189. Swarthmore College Library
            edition.

Face the facts, Joy. The founder and vision of your vaunted abortion mill PP is very much a racist organization.

Dont hate me, Joy. I’m just the messenger.

            Have a nice day!

          • joyscarbo

A lot of heinous stuff was said- and did- back in the 1900’s. To this day there are people who have crazy ideas about black people, disabled people and any other section of society that was deemed “different” from the caucasian norm.

It still does not change what Planned Parenthood has become or it’s vital importance to providing subsidized healthcare to women and men alike. They have always been there to non-judgementally treat sexually transmitted infections and diseases in both women and men. They provide screening and treatment for breast, cervical, uterine and ovarian cancers. I am not phased, moved nor shocked by your assertions. Planned Parenthood was there for me and it was there for my daughter as well. When she had an unplanned pregnancy when she was 20, they provided her with all the information she needed and she was able to decide for herself. Planned Parenthood provided all her prenatal care, including knowing when to send her to a special clinic because her pregnancy had complications. Our grandaughter was born 12 weeks premature but she’s a fiesty little 4 year old now. She chose to have her baby and we ‘re blessed to have a beautiful grandaughter. But I’m glad that my daughter had choices and was able consider and weigh what was best for her. If she had chosen abortion, I wouldn’t love my daughter any less and would have supported her through it whether you like it or not.
God blessed us with a soul that belongs to each of us and no one else. What wrong any one of us do is our doing and we’ll have to answer for it one day. I believe in, “judge not lest you be judged also.” You may judge me wrong, but I don’t care. You won’t be the one to ultimately judge me.
So keep railing and stomping your feet. I’ll keep fighting to keep Roe vs. Wade intact and making sure that all women have the right to make decisions about their own bodies. And you and your Pro-Life friends can keep having meetings.

As you say…have a good day!

          • ObozoMustGo

You are a good person, Joy. 🙂 We disagree on abortion. God bless you, your daughter and granddaughter, as well!

Have a nice day, my lefty friend!

    • Dave_dido

Mr. Obozo, you know I don’t approve your caustic, insulting style, but on this issue I think your comment is valid. Where you and I differ is that I feel there are intelligent people of good will on both sides of the issues. These are moral questions with many nuances. Those who claim to be pro-life need to consider that pro-life includes issues such as the death penalty, euthanasia, war and military funding, caring for the needy and elderly, preserving the environment vs. profit motivation, and many other issues. Unfortunately, conservatives tend to be anti-abortion, but on the other issues they are not pro-life. Perhaps a more centrist attitude on the part of conservatives would make independents like me more sympathetic to the conservative movement. As things now stand it seems to me that conservatives are trapped in their Limbaugh ideology- if you don’t believe everything that Rush believes then you’re a “leftist nutjob”.

      • ObozoMustGo

Hi Dave. I know you dont approve of my “caustic, insulting style” but it’s all in good fun. Really it is.

Now on this issue, there is NO MORAL EQUIVALENT between an innocent human life in the womb and a convicted criminal on death row. NONE! It absolutely boggles my mind that leftist nutjobs even attempt to make such a comparison. Only a fool really buys that argument.

Supporting death penalties does not make me anti-life. It makes me pro-justice. If a person plots, plans, and murders another person, they are not fit to live among us and deserve the death penalty. Look at it this way, Dave. Doesnt allowing a murderer to live do injustice to the murdered and their families? Doesnt allowing a murderer to live cheapen the life of the murdered? Doesnt it? Of course it does.

Your other comments are not at all related to the issue.

Thanks for your input, Dave. I do appreciate your point of view.

        Have a nice day!

        • Dave_dido

I can understand someone whose loved one has been murdered wanting the death penalty out of a sense of justice. As a Christian, I’m called to an ideal of forgiveness and mercy. Would I be able to live up to this ideal if someone I loved was murdered? I don’t honestly know if I could, but I do know what the ideal calls me to. There have been some remarkable cases of forgiving a murderer, Jesus being one of the most notable, the present day Amish another example as they consistently forgive careless motorists who massacre their buggeyed families.
The point I’m trying to make is that American conservatives would have you believe that they are Christian, whereas liberals are atheistic nutjobs and sons of Satan. Yet conservatives don’t, it seems to me, aim for the Christian ideals.
I believe my other comments are relative because there’s a hypocrisy when someone is anti-abortion yet against those other issues that are life-sustaining like caring for the poor, rejecting capital punishment, protecting the environment, discouraging military solutions to political problems, etc. I’m not saying that everyone should be on the pro-life side of these issues, but one would hope that more conservative Christians would understand the ideals to which they are called.

          • ObozoMustGo

Dave, that makes you and I both brothers in Christ. 🙂

We do have differing views. However, clearly the bible supports capital punishment as the proper consequence of murder. I say the greater injustice is done to the value of life of the murdered and their family than is done to the murderer. To me, it’s disrespecting life to NOT give a murderer their just due. And there is no moral equivalency between innocent and unborn humans and those who have committed the worst of the worst sins in life.

I used to be against capital punishment but have clarified my thinking on this matter.

Nice to hear your viewpoint, once again, Dave.

            Have a pleasant evening! 🙂

  • Now let’s see, when we know the cost of a death penalty case if around 5 times that giving life without the possibility of parole and having to stay and look at 4 walls for the rest of their life, I think that is worse. The death penalty is the easy way of but the most expensive. And when we read how many were on death row that were really innocent, how can we keep sending people to death row. There are many reasonse people end of being found guilty, and not all are they were guilty. Only the prosecutor made them look that way by how the evidence was used. We really need to make sure, with today’s technology, they are guitly if we are going to put people to death!

  • howa4x

Why is there supprise? The northeast has always been the leader in social progressive thought in America. The NJ supreme court found the death penality unconstitutionl years ago, and we are the only state in the country to ban assualt weapons. Massachuttes was a leader in heath care reform, Vermont is a leader in recycling, in NY Spitzer cleaned up Wall st before the feds even touched it, and SUNY is not bankrupt like the Calif. higher ed system. The Northeast is where the Ivy league schools are, some of the best hospitals, leaders in big Pharma research. We have our problems but will tackle them sooner than the conservative south and the book burning mid west, who are trying to stop the teaching of evolution

  • Maybe an extra 6 years of Lieberman caused them to get a grip?

Better start building prisons out of rubber, so they can hold more people. We kill unarmed
civilians in our “occupations” of other countries without batting an eyelash, but we run out of
balls when we have to take care of business at home. To the Governor of Connecticut, to bad

of mis-guided anus-orifices. I think it is about time for taxpayers to say “we will not support
the housing and feeding of murders in prisons” with our taxes. GET RID OF THEM !!
