Deal Trims Maximum Jobless Benefits To 73 Weeks

February 17th, 2012 2:34 pm Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — Unemployed workers would no longer be able claim 99 weeks of benefit checks by this summer under a deal being worked out in Congress.

Under this week’s compromise for extending a Social Security tax cut through the rest of 2012, federal unemployment benefits for people who have been out of work more than six months are being scaled back.

i suffered injuries at work that cause demenished work hours and finally a lay off. i became homeless and filed for unemployment and disability. during the years (2.5/30months) that social security ran me around my unemployment payments kept me alive. because i’ve chronic injuries to my neck/back and spine S.S. finally gave in. in all movies about the fall of society you see bands of people living in squaller eating what they can at the edge of revolution. there are few jobs here . companies have exported our future to reduce labor cost and increase profits. at the 73 week mark people are going to be employed or simply written off the books as if they no longer exsist and have families. when this band reaches the 10 million person mark what will the gov. do? thin the herd? there are problems of greater importance that Kardasians tit job that need to be addressed. as the Roman’s circus kept the people entertained during it’s fall we are easily distracted.

The Democrats fold again. The Republicans wrongly believe that knocking people off unemployment will motivate them to get a job. That may be a possibility if there are jobs to be had. I live in a depressed area of New York state in the poorest county. It was depressed before 2008 and is a lot worse now. I know people who have been looking for jobs for well over a year – there are none to be had in my area. So what is a person to do? Relocate? Relocation takes money as does retraining. The people I know are too poor to relocate. They have families and struggle continuously. Once their unemployment ends, what are they to do? Their next step is to seek help from the county. Basically, what this means is that the responsibility will be shifted to the already cash strapped counties to support the ever growing poor class.

The sad fact is that our representatives have no solution. If we have 13 million unemployed (a conservative estimate), does anyone really think there are jobs waiting for all of these people? Our representatives are throwing up their hands and throwing the unemployed to the dogs. Last year, 3 million people were added to the roster of the poor. What is not admitted or discussed in the corrupt halls of government is that our “wonderful” system that works for the few and makes paupers out of most, cannot support the growing labor force. There just aren’t enough jobs! The numbers do not lie, but our representatives do and
try to give the impression that kicking people to the curb is a solution.

well it was either that or have the elderly suffer that was their choice, what would you have done knowing you are a minority and don’t have the votes to help everyone? Put the blame where it belongs on the heartless that care of no one but those that pay for their re-election

I am really curious about the “normal” percentage of profit in our history, and what is excepted as normal now? All of the firing because the “poor corporations” needed to make ends meet is baloney. They cut people and made each person to do 2 jobs so they could make obscene profits. That added to our lack of jobs immensley.

You have eloquently written your summation of the plight of the 99%. I don’t understand how no one in a leadership position can just keep on ignoring the elephant in the living room.

I would like to know why people think that unemployment benefits are welfare. Companies pay into unemployment and that is part of a workers benefit package. If you didn’t work enough to pay into unemployment, then you would’nt qualify anyways. If private sector would start hiring more and, states and federal, along with county or city governments would stop laying people off, more would be working and less having to collect unemployment. Let’s keep everyone working…..it doesn’t take a genious or economist to know that if people are working, making money…they will buy…..duh! My grandson told me that 2 years ago at the age of 8.

I feel that this is a way to cut the unemployment roll so that they can claim that the unemployment rate has improved. My son got a letter from unemployment stating the he would receive bennifits until Dec. 2012 and last week he received another letter say that the check he last received was his last one. He had no warning about this at all. We went to unemployment to see if this was true and it was. Our only answer was blame the Republicans!!! If the Republicans started the bill the democrats went along and so did Mr OBAMA when he signed it into law. People want to go to work but when we can’t even get jobs at McDonald’s because they are taken by people who can’t speak English what are we to do? When my children where in high school they all got jobs at fast food restaurants. Not now we go and the people don’t understand us because the don’t speak english so our orders are wrong. Now all the people that can’t find jobs are all going to apply for welfare so to me all we are doing is shifting the mone around. So we can make unemployment look better.
