Quasm and other republicans big thinkers simply do not understand economics. Obama has actually spent less per year than either Bush II or Reagan. The economy needs more stimulus and that,by getting people working, will start to bring down the deficit. The deficit is high not primarily due to spending but due to not enough tax revenues coming in to pay the expenses and all the expenses due to the slow economy. To explain, deficts have always been solved when more people go to work and pay taxes. Over the last 10 years, we cut taxes far below the level necessary to fund the gorvernment and then Bush put us into a war and gave us prescription drug. Then we get massive unemployment and even less comes in. In 1937 the republicans put the brakes on spending after objecting to FDR's stimulus and it brought us a double dip depression. Exactly what will happen if Romney gets in.

According to The Wall Street Journal and the CBO. In Bush's 2009 fiscal budget, the last of GW Bush's presidency, federal spending rose by 17.9% from $2.98 trillion to 3.52 trillion. Check the official numbers at the office of management and budget. In fiscal 2010, the first budget under Obama, spending fell 1.8% t0 3.46 trillion. In fiscal 2011 spending rose 4.3% to 3.60 trillion. In fiscal 2012, spending is set to rise 0.7 to 3.63 trillion. In fiscal 2013, the latest budget of Obama's term, spending is scheduled to fall 1.3% to 3.58 trillion. Read the CBO's latest budget outlook.

Much of the debt the U.S. has is because of : 1. The Iraqi war (which Obama finally ended) and the Afganistan war, which Obama plans to wind down in 2014. These wars were never even put on the books by GW Bush, so Obama put their expense on the books -- which of course showed up as a huge debt. Plus since Bush took out huge loans to finance the wars, we also owe huge sums on the interest we are paying on these wars. 2. The Bush tax cuts which leave us with the lowest rate of taxation in 60 years. 3. The implementation of Bush's medicare part B, which I agree with -- but it is very expensive.

Much of Obama's spending was to repair the economic damage he inherited. Now, if all of the stimulus proposals Obama wanted to pass had actually gotten through Congress (the Republicans overroad most of them) Obama's expenditures would have been much higher -- but the unemployment rate would have been much lower. So there you have it.
