Smart. Sharp. Funny. Fearless.

TAMPA, Fla. — In 1964, George Romney, then the governor of Michigan, walked out of the Republican National Convention during Barry Goldwater’s acceptance speech. He was protesting his party’s sharp turn rightward and its weak platform plank on civil rights.

This week, 48 years on, Mitt Romney is set to achieve what his father never could. But this great family triumph will not represent a vindication of his father’s principles. Mitt Romney reached the summit not by battling the GOP’s staunchest conservatives but by accommodating them. Nothing better captures the absolute victory of the forces of Goldwaterism than a Romney triumph on the basis of Goldwater’s ideas.

There will certainly be no speeches akin to the one offered by Nelson Rockefeller, the champion of liberal Republicanism. He was booed and hissed by the Goldwater legions who dominated the 1964 gathering.

Scorning the militants of a new right, Rockefeller pronounced their views “wholly alien to the sound and honest conservatism that has firmly based the Republican Party in the best of a century’s traditions, wholly alien to the sound and honest Republican liberalism that has kept the party abreast of human needs in a changing world, wholly alien to the broad middle course that accommodates the mainstream of Republican principles.”

Liberalism cannot speak its name at a Republican convention anymore. And the contemporary figure closest to the liberal Republicanism of old may well be a man named Barack Obama.

Nowhere is it written that a son must follow his father’s political creed, and the times that shaped Mitt Romney were very different from the post-World War II era of social solidarity that set George Romney on his course in business and politics. The capitalism of Bain is not the capitalism of the auto industry during the ’50s and ’60s in which the elder Romney made his mark.

And to get to the top of a far more conservative GOP, Mitt Romney had to make his peace with the tea party, the Christian Coalition, the Club for Growth and all the other forces that have produced the most radically individualistic brand of politics our country has seen since the Gilded Age.

Romney sealed this pact by choosing to run with Paul Ryan, the one-time devotee of Ayn Rand’s self-regarding philosophy. Thus will this election be as large in its implications as Goldwater’s was — but against an incumbent presiding over an economy far less carefree than the booming prosperity machine that helped Lyndon B. Johnson to his landslide and liberalism to its high tide.

  • The real ghosts that should not leave Mitt alone are his record as Governor of Massachussets, his record at Bain and the pain he caused to so many people, his mysterious tax returns, and his overseas tax shelters and investments. I wonder if his decision to keep his tax returns secret was influenced by a conversation with Martha Stewart…Accounts in the Cayman Islands, Swiss banks, and overseas investments are not illegal, insider trading is.

    • Romney Brings Nothing But Pain!! There’s Pain In Bain , There’s Pain In Paul Ryan, And Surely There’s Pain In Those Tax Returns!! Romney Hood And Little Paul Nothing There But PAIN!! OBAMA /BIDEN 2012

  • Michelle Hackler

Mitt Romney should stay far away from the birther issue. By today’s standards of proof his father, George Romney who was born in Mexico, could have problems proving that he was a natural born American. His father would not of had a United States issued birth certificate. Mitt Romney’s grand parents might of had problems proving that they were American citizens when he was born, given the legal status of Utah when his grandparents were born. The Mormon Church may be excellent at keeping birth records, but the case could be made that the Romney family birth records had been fraudulently entered into Mormon Church Records or changed by some unknown person. Therefore George Romney may have had problems, if he were running today, that he was qualified to be President. Therefore Mitt Romney could be the son of a Mexican national.

All of this is just pure supposition, but given the history of Romney’s family, he should be one of the last people who should become involved in or with people who are involved in the birther issue with President Obama. Maybe someone should be asking for his birth certificate.

    • Oh, I see Liberals are now Birthers. There is no question of Romney’s birth & citizenship, but you convieniently ignore Obama’s, as well as his sealing on “day-one” all his college records and everything else.

The election is about whether you want big Federal Government control over your lives or a balanced budget, less taxes and more individual Liberty.

      • If that is true, then you should be voting for Ron Paul and not the pandering Romnomaniac.

      • The election is about saving this country from a descent into h e !!….OBAMA will win and Mitty can pack up and go back to destroying the lives and welfare of anyone unfortunate enough to work for him….

        • Elisabeth God bless you and your family. Amen

        • dotutz

From your mouth Elizabeth, to God’s ears. I shudder to think that Romney/Ryan will win and in case they do, may the Good Lord bless us all because we’re going to need it. Young and Old! It made me fell good to know that my college educated grandchildren are voting for Obama and I just pray there are enough of us to get him in!

          • S-3

I’m one of those kids… Don’t worry about that!

        • Soldier64

Obama has already sent us into a spiraling downhill plunge, and if elected he will make us the next Greece. Please open your eyes and ears and listen to the conventions and the debates and look back at what was promised and NOT delivered. In addition, I have been a Democrat since 1966 and I voted for Obama but not this time.

          • dotutz

Who got us in two wars without spending any money on them? Who started a Prescription Drug Program for Srs. (which by the way, still costs us a bundle) without allocating any money for the program? Who wants to give Millionaires, Billionaires and the rich a raise and let the poor pay for it? I opened my eyes, ears and am old enough to know that what the Republicans promise will never come true!!! As I said, may the Good Lord bless us all if the Reps win, because we are sure going to need it. Maybe if the Reps in Congress had negotiated Obama might have gotten some of the programs he instituted into law. Shame, Shame on this Congress, they all need to be voted out…….

          • Peoples425

Actually the only reason for the way our country has been dictated as of recent has been the policies of the Bush administration. It’s the same way that the success of the Obama administration won’t be seen until the next term, but if Romney is voted in, I can GUARANTEE, that whatever success that comes if he’s in office will be attributed to Romney/Ryan as opposed to the policies of Obama. It truly is saddening that many people such as yourself cannot see the forest for the trees.

          • Justin Napolitano

Sorry to inform you Soldier but one of the primary reasons Greece is in trouble is that the rich have moved their money out of the country so that they don’t have to pay taxes. Kind of like what Romney has done, don’t you think?

          • grammyjill

So, you’re short sighted with no memory and haven’t been paying attention. When Obama went into office, he not only found out how bad the recession was, but also that Bush’s wars were not funded, medicare part D was not funded and all three of Bush’s stimulas packages were not funded. And Paul Ryan voted for all of them.
So, things were much worse than anyone(except the republicans) knew. Since then, the president has been trying to do everything he can to get us back on track, but he’s been trying to do it with a republican majority in the house. They have done everything they can to stop the president. Thr past year, even though there has been things to be done to help us they have spent their time voting on bills to stop abortion, make it illeagle for women to have any form of contriception, and keep women from having any type of preventitive health care. So don’t be blaming the president for something he has no control over. Instead vote out these no working republicans.

          • So you don’t think that the party of “anything to defeat Obama” has had no effect on the events of the last three years. Are you blind or just willfully ignorant?
The last balanced budget under a republican was during Ike’s time. All of the recessions of the last 4o years have been the result of failed repbulican policies. Why not give Obama some more time to finish what he started and with any luck boot some of the “do nothing” GOP out to facilitate that?
From your name I might surmise that you were in Nam in 64, if that’s the case, are you hoping for another Republican instigated war to help the economy? Best of luck with that.

        • Mitts problem is he has no principles like his father. As mentioned Reagan won by assuring Americans he wasn’t an extremist with his hand on the red nuke button. Mitt was already a moderate Republican. But he has shown he is more than willing to sell himself to the GOP base for being elected President. Basically rubber stamoing anything the GOP base wants done. This is exactly what a President doesn’t want to do. Obama has angered the left base. Bush won by preaching compassionate conservatism. Whether he preached it or not. I full expect Romney to play to the GOP convention crowd rather than to all Americans tonite.

      • @ paulcindy you know better than way you think. if you are part of the ignorant people or thomas that never believd untill he saw Jesus hand that truly he is the one that was nailed on the tree . all investigation had been done and all comes out to the fact that Obama was born in america but you still have doubt. let talk about issue at hand concerning mitt’s tax return, what is he still hidding if nothing wrong with it. he should be a true son of his father by releasing all his tax. to make things easy just 5 years? why should he be thinking some questions will comes out if he does and nothing hidden is there. paul if you are not part of the rich people ready to sleep on the street if you mistakely vote him in ……………….. why should man that does not have the interest of america be the president. well, you might why ? because if he does he will not take american jobs overseas at any point. he will be bold to release his tax return. he will pay correct tax. He will not be using war tone to others countries when he knows that president’s children don’t go to war, he should put his children at front before thinking of any war. why is he not paying tax on those money he keeping overseas e.g Cayman Islands, Swiss banks. why dont he be planing of fight cayman or swiss. let be realistic this is a fake man. he does not have interest of black people in mind, why should he says is the black that coolect assistance most. when infact he know that most black started from level one not like white that started from level 3……

        • tedthetruther

I have no idea what you are saying?! You must be a product of the SEIU’s public school system. God help us all.

      • Cairndance

NO, I think the election is about whether the 1% should have total control of the United States of America, or whether this should be a country of the people, by the people and for ALL the people, of the United States of America!

      • That is what they tell you it is about. Ryan’s budget adds to the debt, Romney’s budget would raise taxes on most of us though the closing of exceptions, there is NO LIBERTY for woman in a GOP administration.

      • monilla75

@PaulCindy…… I am proud to be a Liberal…. We make choices on facts and not party LINES… If President Obama was Romney or Romney the only Democratic candidate…I WOULD NOT VOTE FOR HIM…. The Liberals have a lot of common sense… He was vetted for the Presidency… His birth is no concern of ours… If this was a problem, Conservatives would have found proof 4 years ago….So let it gggo000000…

Why are they tryying to take all the cheap shots to get into the white house… Romney can’t win on his own record so he has to LIE; Twist: Distort and LIE to win…. That is a sad indictment… Winning at any cost… Romney is not TRANSPARENT…. but if he wins you will see what a spineless, empty suit of a man he is…..

He outsourced jobs; fired people; outsourced his money; will not show his Tax Returns which are required by law; LIKE BIRTH CERTIFICATES ARE…. All Presidential candidates have shown at least 6 years of tax returns…What is he hiding?

McCain turned in 2 years for President and all years as being a Senator…. Why is Romney only giving 2010 and 2011 which is still being worked on… Why won’t he give 2009 which is completed… All Presidential candidates should be mandated to give a certain ammount… 1 or 2 is not enough… He has NOT given 2 yet….

When he ran for governor he lied and had to file his taxes over because he didn’t file them as a resident of Mass., but he wanted to be there Governor …..Same as now; he don’t want to show his Tax returns are pay taxes to the USA for all his hidden money… He is trying to get over on the USA but he wants to be the President of the same country he is bilkimng and Milkimng. So if you he is a PERPECTUAL LIAR what is going to change that…. he is evading taxes…. Bilking the system …. and milking the USA…

fool me once shame on you…. fool me twice shame on me [USA]

      • Michelle Hackler

No we liberals are not becoming birthers, just pointing out how what applies to Obama can also apply to Romney. And as far as increasing government George Bush created the Department of Homeland Security, a whole new cabinet position, with its own massive budget. Obama has cut more government positions in four years than Bush did in eight. And government control of our lives. The Republicans want to control woman’s bodies and woman’s health care. The Republicans want to control the lives of the GLBT community by denying them the right to marry whom they chose. The Republicans created the Patriot Act which allows the government to detain individuals for an indefinite time based upon someone’s say so. The Republicans support unlimited secret giving to PACs so that a few rich people can buy elections. The Republicans have passed laws demanding that all citizens in certain states have to have a state identification in order to vote. Its not enough that people have lived in a community for years and never moved and are known by the people running the elections. This is all government control. Birtherism is an outlandish position but there have been Republicans who have run for run for President such as John McCain who was born in the Panama Canal Zone and Democrats never questioned their citizenship. And tell your favorite birther that a Certificate of Live Birth is a Birth Certificate. Maybe he should look at his and see how it is labelled. When liberals call conservatives on their lies and misdeeds, they do not wish to do it. They want the conservatives to live up to the morality they profess and stop lying. Either that or to quit calling others morality into question.

      • what a joke…..big govt repukes are on a daily basis trying to control this female body…..less taxes? sure for the very rich……have you even read the ryan budget? not. you should read it to see how you will be royally screwed if willard gets in!

      • Paul, if this election turns out to be about big Federal government control, a balanced budget, and tax rates lower than the lowest rates in modern history, Mitt Romney will lose. His promise to restore the $716 reduction in projected MEDICARE expenses over the next ten years is a de facto endorsement of out of control spending, an endorsement of big government, and a violation of the Republican Cut, Cap, and Balance Act. Hiding the borrowed money spent on crusades does not constitute fiscal responsibility, it is just an example of deceit designed to fool those without the capacity to think logically. Bear in mind that nobody is proposing to change our tax rates back to what they were when Republican President Ronald Reagan was in office, much less what they were when Republican President Dwight Eisenhower was in office, what is being proposed is a modest increase to bring them back to Clinton era levels when we balanced the budget, created 23 million jobs, and everyone prospered. A second dosage of the medicine that almost destroyed economy, produced one of the lowest job creation records in modern history, and threatened our security and standard of living is the last thing we need. We do not need to go back, we must move forward like every generation before us did.

      • PaulCindy what you do not realize is you cannot get a balanced budget or reduce the deficit without raising taxes somewhere or slashing services that even you do not want slashed! Talk about individual liberties then let’s let woman choose what they do with their body and not have the government or even other individuals tell them. Let’s change the drug laws to a more reasonable approach. Why is it the right chooses which liberties they like and tell others anything else should be restricted

      • adler56

So are you a trans gender PaulCindy? Why do you ignorant repugnants have such an interest in college transcripts- you would be embarrassed by how much higher his grades were- if you even made it out of high school.

      • Justin Napolitano

No Paulcindy, it is about the destruction of the middle class by Republicans who just can’t seem to give the rich enough, don’t care about people that don’t have heath insurance, don’t care about the poor and elderly by insisting that both Medicare be ended, as we know it, and medicare be scaled back so much as to be ineffective.
It is about billions of tax cuts for oil companies already awash in hundreds of billions of dollars. It is about decency when dealing with everyday ordinary Americans and the problems they face. It is about an America that should do evereything it can to raise up the middle class by direct intervention instead of advocating, endlessly, a trickle down economy that never seems to materialize.
It is about fairness in the tax system so that people earning million, not through earned wages but through capital gains and dividends which are taxed at much lower levels. It is about putting money to work in this country instead of spreading it around the world, ostensibly, to invest in other countries but primarily to lower tax payments which further cripples the Federal and State government in trying to meet existing commitments and obligations.
It is about an America I remember well and will fight to restore.

      • the republican party as couldn’t ballance a chair on a flat floor. they are anti freedom anti woman and shills for the 1% of the1%, good nazi’s all. the last gop buget ballancer? dwight d. eisienhour

      • DurdyDawg

You idiots just keep coming back to it. NO! It is not about big g’ment, it’s about a fraud running for office calling someone else a fraud.. Like goofing off at work watch others goof off.. And this ‘birther thing.. You’ll never be satisfied no matter what he reveals.. In short, you’re calling the CIA, FBI and all other initialed departments slackers and liars.. Don’t you realize g’ment employees AND representatives are scrutinized well before their offered a job? This means, the process you or your family went through as a back ground check was chicken shit com pared to federal scrutiny and here you are calling them inadequate because they didn’t catch his Muslim birth and you’re own party.. Ask yourself, unless it’s a has been pub, who beside the donut mouth and a dirty tin badge has brought it up in debate? Even you’re hero said he believes Obama is an American citizen.. Don’t you ever listen to your own people or is it better to be Limpbar attentive? That you even think that Mittens will be able to balance the budget, lower taxes and allow individual liberty is hilarious in itself.

      • fastfootedd

Enough of whether or not someone was born in the country – Just ask yourselves who more American – Barrack O or Nit Romney? If you look at how one has used every cheat in the book to avoid paying his fair share of taxes and how he’s earned his wealth, it’s plain to see that Romney is about Un-American a person can be.

He has no character and will say whatever others want him to say just to get elected and one up his father’s achievements. He’s not running in an effort to better America. He’s running to put another feather in his cap.

If by some act of evil he wins the Presidential Election our country will be doomed. The current Republic Platform is focused on making America more and more of a police state as they continue to strip freedom of choice from the people and create their own kingdom and make us their slaves.

I just can’t believe that the majority of American’s are so ignorant or just plain stupid to vote for a dictatorship. I’m quite frankly embarrassed as an American that someone like Romney could even be considered as the leader of the local Boys Scout troop let alone the Free World.

Let’s not blame Obama for the current state of the economy – he inherited it from oh ya the failed Bush years. Couple that with the fact that the Republicans in the House and Senate have done absolutely NOTHING to help improve our economy at every turn just to ensure “Obama is only a one term President” in order to have a pray in winning back the White House. I say we did pretty decent – Imagine where we would be had they not employed this tactic and worked for the American People and not their own interest.

Just look at history and the choice is easy – It’s even more obvious than ever who should never be in power again especially with their current platform – THE CRASY REPUBLICS. Next they tell us when and when not to take a dump.

Wake up people and don’t fall for the lies that are easily perpetrated through FOX and others who no longer care about facts as long as they are receiving mega $.

      • You are a complete idiot if you think that Mitt Romney is going to lower taxes you must be on of those that are looking for a tax shelter because the only people that he’s going to help are people in hi tax bracket and I am working to make sure that President Obama get another 4 year and Mitt Romney can go back to his crooked dealing like when he was a t Bain Capitol

      • PaulCindy, No, it is about whether we want a government we elect or a government controlled by wealthy corporate elites. I’m afraid most people on the right wont understand that until it is too late.

      • You are such a freaking troll cindy. MY GAWD Obama’s birth announcement was in the Hawaian newspaper. As Jon Stewart mocked YES Obama wasn’t born in Hawaii. But his clever mother thought “my son may be the first black President.” “So I better make sure he is born in the US by fabricating his birth certificate. “

    • tedthetruther

Oh Michelle, You are such a loser! Romney’s records are open for public inspection. Too bad Obama’s are locked away from public inspection. At least he has useful idiots like you to parrot his marxist views and sing his kumbaya’s

      • johninPCFL

Really? The records for the decade he paid no income taxes are available for inspection? Are Romney’s college arrest records for impersonating a police officer available for inspection? (Oh, I forgot, those were just pranks.)

BTW, college academic records are always open only to the person they belong to. Romney’s and Ryan’s are sealed too.

      • grammyjill

Ok if Romney’s records are open to public inspection, tell me how he did as govenor, or how was it that he “saved” the olympics or how was it that he could deduct a dancing horse as a business deduction when he himself said he bought it for his wife because bshe had ms. By the way an ms patient RIDES houses for therapy. She has never been on that horse!
And since he took all records from his term as governor including computer hard drives, and all records from olympics were shredded. You are NOT seeing his records. Why don’t you ask romney for his college records? No president has ever had to produce them before. Why Obama?

        • tedthetruther

          Hi Grammy,
Obama should show his records because he has no history. Who is he? Why a strange SS #, why hidden school records, blank voting records in Illinois, law license turned in for both he and his wife to avoid sanctions, and on and on and on…

          • grammyjill

I just read a story about how romney started Bane and where his investors came from. Most are in jail or dead now. Do you think the people should know that he was sucking up to drug lords to get investment capitol? Do you think it should be spread that he got donations from rich people in other countries. That’s not even close to legal.
Obama’s school records would be as easy to get as Romneys. The rest is just crap that the republicans are trying to get people like you to not vote for him, cause it would  look bad for them to just come out and say don’t vote for the ni**er.

          • tedthetruther

            Hi Grammy,
When all else fails, throw out the race card and say we are all racist. I voted for Obama in 2008 and had high hopes he could be a great president. He has turned out to be an utter failure and a hyper partisan. Everything he touches turns to lead. He takes care of his friends and everyone else is screwed. Think Solyndra, GM, etc.

          • grammyjill

Ok dear, you need to do some checking. Solyndra and GM were actually under Bush. Just another of those surprizes Obama got when in got into office. And he really hasn’t been as you say hyper partisan. I remember watching on the news about Obama and Boehner had worked together and had come up with a good jobs bill that they both thought would pass quickly. Well? It’s still sitting in the House. The republicans in the house refused to even look at it until after the election. They also refused to do anything about raising the debt limit which made us loose our AAA rating for the first time in history. They have spent the past year trying to pass bills to stop any abortion for any reason, stop contriception for women, and stop any preventative health care for women. Hell. Mitch Maconnell said on national tv that their(republicans) only job was to see that Obama was a one term president. So, if that was their only job, do you really wonder why we are in the spot we’re in or that those old white guys just might be a little racist.

    • MikeCassidyAHS

      Michelle Hackler;
I have no inentions of voting for Romney, but, he was born on U S soil, he is a legitimate candidate for president, unfortunately.

      • Barack Obama was too, and that does not stop the birthers from attacking him on this issue. Interestingly, nobody raised an eye brow when John McCain, who was born in Panama, ran for President. I don’t have a problem with that since, as a person who lived 30 years overseas, I am very familiar with the laws that apply to children of U.S. citziens working abroad, and I am familiar with privileges extended to children of Americans born in places like the Panama Canal Zone and U.S. military bases overseas, what bothers me is the duplicity and cynicism of the birthers.

        • johninPCFL

George Romney was born in Mexico after his parents escaped the US restrictions on polygamy. He and ran as a GOP against Goldwater in 1964. Nobody questioned his Mexican “birth certficate” either.

        • MikeCassidyAHS

I’ve often wondered about John McCain myself in this respect. But I believe he was born in
The Panama Canal Zone, a U S protected territory. Son of U S Naval family, his father a rear or vice admiral. I think that his citizenship was recognized in his early adult life through congressional legislation or judicial review. I’m not sure he was considered a ‘NATURAL BORN CITIZEN’ at the time of his birth. Yes, it does bother me that no one mentioned that I the last election cycle. You’re correct, the birthers will never give up, and I believe this is true because of he color of Barack’s skin.
          Mike

      • Justin Napolitano

If I post a message everyday for 3.8 years that Mike Cassidy is not an American citizen and therefore should not have an opinion about the US presidential election do you think that some people might start believing me? Would you not feel that you constantly had to defend your citizenship and then try to post your birth certificate on-line as proof? Would you not have to then post the long form and insist that it is valid while people continue to say that it was photo shopped.
At what point would you conclude that trying to reason with folks that don’t operate on reason are impossible to convince of anything they don’t want to believe?
You sir should consider what I have just written.

        • MikeCassidyAHS

          Justin
I hear exactly what you’re saying. I believe fully that Barack is a U S Citizen. Keep calling the kettle white enough, the ignorant will eventually believe you.

      • grammyjill

So was our current president! Those asshole republicans are just pushing that cause he ain’t an ugly white guy.

        • MikeCassidyAHS

          I fully do agree!!!

    THE REAL TRUTH

If George Romney could hear what his American Taliban Republican neo-conservative, anti-everything son was saying today, he would be puking on his shoes.

Plus, George cared about all people, including women, while Mitt RoMoney thinks and talks like he hates women. If Mittens had his way, all ATR women would be wearing burqas.

  • desertdustoff

paul cindy…you birthers need to get a life…Hackler brings up some points about nit wit mitt’s proof of citizenship that you pass off as ” there is no question of his ( puppet mitt’s) birth & citizenship” but her case is more valid than the case you tea baggin’ (ku klux klan) birthers have fabricated. Get a life and start thinking for yourself. Your rampant, bigoted racism highlights your ignorance. Yes, the Civil War is over, and yes, the south lost , and yes, blacks are black Americans. Get used to it and get on with your life. Oh, and how much longer are you going to do what the rich white plantation owners (rove, koch sisters, murdoch, adelson, trump) tell you to do, and how long are you going to let them tell you how to think? Do you know what a woolie is? Look it up…you are one!!

    • I agree with you. When I think about how the ultra-conservatives, tea partyiers and repblican robots hammered and hammered about President Obama’s birth certificate and now that he published his “long form” birth certificate, some die hards still won’t accept it. Yet, Mitt Romney refuses to release his own “I am sure it is a long form” tax returns for the past 10 or even five year. I think something is rotten in Denmark; or rather Switzerland and the Cayman Islands. Do you really want a President who hides his own tax records, proposing new Tax Rules on us, the middle class hard working American? Do you want Romney and his side-kick revising Social Security and Medicare. Heck, they will never NEED it. (but I’ll bet they will apply for it.) You and I will never ever come close to the Health Care Coverage and Protected Pensions that our government officals will receive. I am “retired” and receive SS Benefits, but still have to work part time to survive. Out of my part-time paycheck I still pay for State/Local/Federal Taxes, Social Security, and Medicare.
Just a few of my meandering thoughts.

I have been around a long time and I never dreamed that I would ever see a totally anti-America, socialist/marxist in the white house, but that is what we have now. I have figured out that there are only two types of people who wote for Obama, 1) the ultra left-wing liberal anti-America socialist determined to destory this great country or 2) the completely totally brain dead stupid.

    • hilandar1000

Pat, you poor thing — you quite obviously have no idea what you are talking about. Do you have any idea of what socialism is? Do you realize that the countries that have the highest rate of approval by their citizens are democratic socialist countries? These are countries that have historically experienced many different types of government for many centuries, and have settled on a type of government with the best system for their people. Private businesses flourish in these countries as well as providing security for the most most vulnerable of their citizens. You’ve got some heavy studying to do, girl, boy, or whatever you are, before you call others “brain dead stupid”.

All any educated person has to do is look at what Obama has said in his book, in his OWN WORDS: “if things turn ugly, I will side with the muslims” BUT WHO will he side against??? America? the American people?? His own Justice Department??? ISRAEL????? Our leader is a loser and not a friend of Israel or America.

      • grammyjill

I hope you start paying attention cause otherwise, next november you’ll be kicking your own ass and wondering why you fell for that slick lieing bastard romney.

      • Cairndance

Just exactly which book is that in?

        • middleclasstaxpayer

Sorry for delay…..Obama’s book is titled AUDACITY OF HOPE, in which HE WROTE:
“I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.”
But again, we ALL have to ask: If he stands “with the Muslims” WHO will he stand against? America? the American people? The Congress of the US? His own Justice Dept??? Israel????? Read the above-referenced book written by Obama…it’s ALL in HIS OWN WORDS……he says it, so we should believe it, and BEWARE!

          • Cairndance

I’m reading that book right now. What chapter is it in? I will be interested in reading the entire chapter.

          • middleclasstaxpayer

Sorry for delay…they are NOT linking answers with further questions?? The quote is on page 261 of Obama’s book…in its larger context, Obama refers to how Japanese Americans were treated after the Pearl Harbor attack. It’s so very easy to look back 70 years and decide what was done right and what was done wrong. But to decide, under similar circumstances, that we should “side with the Muslims” is not consistent with current reality. During & after the World Trade Center attack, any thinking American would consider questioning Muslim loyality, NOT just “siding with the Muslims.” Again, in doing so, ask yourself: WHO is he siding against???

  • Dominick Vila; Thank you. I couldn’t have said it better myself.

  • George Soliman

Look up about what Obama have done in Egypt, he have stand in the side of Fanatic islamic
Brotherhood to give them the Ruler, and he have stand with Saudia Arabia(Wahabia) against the Cristian Coptice in Egypt, it seem to be that 99% ofall Christian around the world
will not elect Obama for What have done against Muslim & Christian in Egypt.

  • The National Memo is a joke, Romney is the best thing for this Country

  • The National Memo is a joke, Romney is the best thing for the country

    • grammyjill

Have you got your head up your ass?

  • Mitty Romney is nothing but pure evil!

  • David White

Mitt is no Isaac! Unlike Mitt Isaac walked the path of his father Abraham.

  • 1silverstar7

put yea boots on r wing nuts not for the water the manure is building up

  • Looks like we have a few ‘Republican Bullies’ reading the National Memo. I’m proud of my affiliation with the Democratic party. Romney will not win……because the Republican congress has not done a bloody thing in 4 years. Please don’t refer to us as anti-Americans and brain-dead stupid….you are entitled to your opinion but calling anyone names is more un-American than anything that President Obama has ever done! Don’t like the National Memo??….Then why are you reading it??

    • Edsanjuan

Robin: Why are we reading The National Memo?
To correct and set on the right (pardon the pun …) path people like you that say that “….because the Republican congress has not done a bloody thing in 4 years.”
      Robin, Republican Congress ?? !!
      FOUR (4) years ??!!!
      Where were you, my friend?
“The problem with Democrats is not so much that they don’t know, but that they know so much that isn’t (ain’t to you !) so.”
      – Ronald Reagan

      • grammyjill

The congress has a republican majority. This majority has let NO business of this nation take place for two years. They have voted on HR3 which forces a woman to have the child of her rapist, HR212 which gives full rights to a fertilized egg, which makes abortion FOR ANY REASON murder. That one I don’t understand because if a woman needs an abortion to save her life but can’t because of HR212, then she dies and so does their precious egg. But with their weird science I’m sure they think the egg will survive and become a big strong republican. They have also tried to pass bills to make it ileagle for women to have any preventitive health care. That’s your government at work trying to solve the problems of this country. You want four more years of that?

        • grammy: I think it is YOU who should go back to school, …. and try to reach 10th grade THIS time around.

Just to give you ONE example of why nobody takes you seriously: You state that “They have also tried to pass bills to make it ileagle (you must mean “illegal”) for women to have any preventitive (you must mean “preventive” or “preventative”) health care.”

grammy, listen up! ILLEGAL FOR WOMEN TO HAVE ANY PREVENTIVE HEALTH CARE ???!!!!

Girl, whatever you are smoking, you must give it up!! It is affecting your judgement and your perception of reality!!

Again, with your CRAZY allegations you are proving Reagan correct when he said: ” The problem with Democrats is not so much that they don’t know, but that they know so much that isn’t (ain’t to you !) so.”

          • grammyjill

So my spelling isn’t great. At least my mind and ears work.  and yes they wish to stop preventative health care for women. They have tried to pass that bill twice in the last three months.  And Ryan is one of the authors of that bill as well as eight antiabortion bills and the personhood bill.

  • To Paulcindy -The ONLY republican who balanced the budget is Franklin Roosevelt. Bill Clinton cleaned up 12 years of republican mess and left office with a budget surplus. George W Bush destroyed that by tax breaks for the rich which resulted in the worst economic melt down since the 30’s. The only reason the economy and job growth slowed is a bunch of ignorant tea party republicans in the house who’s only agenda was to make Obama a 1 term president. As far as individual liberty goes, the only party taking our rights away is republicans. Last assault was George W. Bush’s Patriot Act. Mitt wins and there will be horrible times coming. But you republicans will fall in line and vote for mitt, voting against your interest time and time again just like good little brainwashed sheeple. And a couple facts, Ronald Regan DID NOT have a birth certificate and most of the spending put on Obama was George W Bush’s unpaid for war on Iraq for their oil. Mitt Romney and the tea party republicans are pure evil and are already beating the war drums for Iran’s oil because who controls the oil controls the world. Republicans are nothing but big oil’s puppets!

    • Edsanjuan

Davekzy1: Roosevelt a Republican??!! Who told you THAT, Obama ??
Har, har, har, har, haaa !!!

  • TheJoker1

In 1964, George Romney, then the governor of Michigan, walked out of the Republican National Convention during Barry Goldwater’s acceptance speech.

  • Edsanjuan

This article is so funny !! E.J. Dionne, ever the Democrap apologist, used the following introduction headline (obviously without considering what the implications were): “Romney discarded his father’s principles in pursuit of the White House.”

Well, Mr. Dionne, we now have a President, the WORST in history (and, after Carter, that’s saying much!!) who DID NOT DISCARD his (socialist) father’s principles in pursuit of the White House ….

Mr. Dionne, are you sure it was you, and not Joe Biden, who wrote this line ??

    • grammyjill

you still have no idea what you’re talking about. go back to school and pay attention this time.

  • warnings! three times! The principle of interpretation of human being are entirely different. This is a point which the country must take into consideration when stepping out to votes. Whoever ignore the mistake of the past in order to justify himself run into the law of karma, with a severe penalty for the country. Because, what determines the future of this country will not be the backward in time. However, it is necessary that every body remember that lucifer find automatic some partner in this country politic. Therefore, when you discover that the travel agency of the Creator “I AM THAT I AM” will not issue the return ticket, you will whether looking for a way of overcoming the tragedy death of this country quickly. I’d like to know how Obama got his father’s socialist ideas, when he never knew his father? And Romney’s father from what I understand was a pretty good guy, which Mitt didn’t inherit his genes from what I hear.

    • grammyjill

What socialist ideas? Helping people isn’t socialist as far as I know. It’s human.

    • ClydeMcWhorter

Maybe Mit Romney Is Not As Bad As You Think>. Maybe, Mit Has Someone Behind Him That Is A Hater.Maybe, Mits “Better” Half Is The One He Grew His Morals With. Maybe, Mit Is “WHIPPED”.

  • adler56

His father wouldn’t attend this convention – if he did he would walk out during williard’s speech.

  • Leana_Bosley

As a student of Morman history I am not surprised that Romney does not want to share his TAX history. The church would know to much about his actual income which would reflect poorly on him. The time Mormanisn began it was not the only break off group, but it was the only group that came into conflict with the people it found itself among. Joseph Smith made certain decisions that broke trust with his neighbors by engaging is some shady behavior and desire to control the local government. The son’s of the revolution could not accept his desire to control local affairs through his people.

  • Teluu

What I don’t understand is, Why is he not releasing more of his tax return to calm the critics? It’s now true to me he is hiding something. Image it’s Obama in this issue of tax saga, the republicans might have written tons of books and make louder noise than the Democrats to force him to release more years. The tax issue is going to hunt him further in the campaign.

    • grammyjill

He did the same thing while running for govenor. Except then it was if he was a legal resident of the state. When they finally got the info it was too late. He was a resident of Utah and had no legal standing to run for office. So he is hiding something that will keep him from being voted into office.

  • When you lay down with dogs, you gety fleas! When Romney’s “skeletons come out of the closet and chase him all around the room, bats come out, spiders hang in, and dance around in a sad slow tune!” If he thinks he’s lonely now, wait until November! . . Most spoiled rich kids crap on the inheritance their parents leave them. It’s a historical fact. Look at Bush I compared to Bush II. Bush I was a far better, albeit, one-term President than BushII. Bush I had what his son missed out on: morals and human diginity.

  • this guy is lying scum who cares nothing about this country or its people, just power, greed and more power. he is garbage with no soul.

  • rockin_the_bay_in_Tampa

What no one has seemed to get across, it that the United States is NOT a business, it is NOT in business to make a money profit, it has no CEO, COO, etc., it has no BOD (board of directors), yet Mitty seems to think that just because he “ran” a business in the private sector that he can so run the United States…it doesn’t work that way! Government is supposed to be set up to care and provide for its people; provide a money system, road system, police protection, fire protection, education, clean water, waste water disposal, health care, and the list goes on. Of course, it takes money to do all those things…that is where the citizens of the United States come in. Everyone is supposed (the key word here is supposed) to pay their FAIR share of taxes. Obviously, that is not the way it is set up now. Furthermore, the “big” users of the systems should actually pay more because they use them more…but we won’t go there. I have a problem with some one who is not paying their fair share and are purposely stashing money in offshore accounts and then using the “legal” tax code to skirt paying what they really should be paying…they are not lying about, however they are not exactly telling the whole truth.

  • the anti-christ romney,s dad would be ashamed of his son. from what ive heard he was a smart man till he had mitt. its happen that nothing good rubber off on him . for he went right to the anti-christ from his birth

  • The example of Bush Jr. should have taught us that “like father, like son” or “chip off the old block” cannot be taken for granted in politics.

  • fastfootedd

You want rapid positive change in America – Simple replace the Republicans in both the House and Senate and keep Obama – Plain and simple.

  • 1percenter4Obama

To all the “birth-er republicans”: Please try to use your brain, of course Obama was born an American citizen!!! Are you so easily influenced by hateful lies, Fox, and right wing propaganda to get you to turn against Obama that you can’t even move on to the real issues??? Or are you just a racist??? I for one, am so tired of the mindless stupidity and wish that the real issues would be discussed. Like for example, we had republican trickle down economics and look where we are,it didn’t work!! We lost so many jobs, middle class declined, and spent so much money giving tax breaks to the wealthy and fighting wars, that now we are in debt and our American infrastructure is in jeopardy!!! Can we stop being insane and accept reality, history, science, and real facts and move on??? Obama is on the right track and understands how to fix the mess we are in. We have been gaining jobs since he got in office but the republicans have sabotaged and twisted everything that he has done! Romney and his wealthy friends are just trying to make this country for them, pay less taxes and force their religious beliefs on everyone (Ryan too, religious misguided zealot). If you haven’t noticed by now, Romney seems particularly interested and has spent a lot of effort to avoid paying taxes and avoid showing us!! That is what he is about, he is a money making machine which does not qualify him to be our leader !!! The “other wacky right republicans “are so entrenched in parts of the bible they can not see the true light, like, “love thy neighbor” and “take care of the less among us”, they focus on unborn children, not all the children starving in our country!! “Women’s bodies can’t get pregnant by rape”, by Todd Akin!!! Again , a zealot, trying to justify his religious beliefs!! Picking and choosing from the bible is dangerous! Denying facts, science, history, and taking extreme positions is also dangerous! This is where the republican party is now!! I am hoping that there are enough educated, truly informed people left in our country to vote and keep Obama as our President!!

    • Jennifer A. Nolan

I’d rather have Jill Stein, the Green Party candidate, but thank you, anyway!! You’ve really made my day!

I’m tired of little boys trying to misguidedly finish the job their father never could. America was not created by the founders to foster political dynasties for rich kids who can campaign for eight years without a job. Obama may not be the saviour everyone wanted, but he appears to be an honest man who does an honest day’s work, coping in the most difficult of circumstances. America is still great, a shining beacon on the hill for many many people around the world. We can live with diminishing influence in the world because it’s what we always wanted – that other countries grow up free, strong and economically viable. Let’s enjoy the fruits of our forefather’s labors, not as spoilt rich kids, but as proud citizens who surprise the world with our ingenuity and persistence.
