Romney’s most revealing line: “We don’t want another Iraq.” Thus did he bury without ceremony the great Bush-Cheney project. He renounced a war he had once supported with vehemence and enthusiasm.

Then there’s budget policy. If the Romney/Paul Ryan budget and tax ideas were so popular, why would the candidate and his sidekick, the one-time devotee of Ayn Rand, be investing so much energy in hiding the most important details of their plans? For that matter, why would Ryan feel obligated to forsake his love for Rand, the proud philosopher of “the virtue of selfishness” and the thinker he once said had inspired his public service?

Romney knows that by substantial margins, the country favors raising taxes on the rich and opposes slashing many government programs, including Medicare and Social Security. Since Romney’s actual plan calls for cutting taxes on the rich, he has to disguise the fact. Where is the conviction?

The biggest sign that Tea Party thinking is dead is Romney’s straight-out deception about his past position on the rescue of the auto industry.

The bailout was the least popular policy Obama pursued — and, I’d argue, one of the most successful. It was Exhibit A for Tea Partiers who accused our moderately progressive president of being a socialist. In late 2008, one prominent Republican claimed that if the bailout the Detroit-based automakers sought went through, “you can kiss the American automotive industry goodbye.” The car companies, he said, would “seal their fate with a bailout check.” This would be the same Mitt Romney who tried to pretend on Monday that he never said what he said or thought what he thought. If the bailout is now good politics, and it is, then free-market fundamentalism has collapsed in a heap.

“Ideas have consequences” is one of the conservative movement’s most honored slogans. That the conservatives’ standard-bearer is now trying to escape the consequences of their ideas tells us all we need to know about who is winning the philosophical battle — and, because ideas do matter, who will win the election.

I agree in principle, but make no mistake, the “reasonable” Republicans that emerged a few weeks ago are the same ones that called for the privatization of Social Security, dismantling of MEDICARE, more irresponsible tax breaks, more loopholes and subsidies for the wealthy, elimination of middle class tax deductions, and a record of plant closures and outsourcings that augur disaster for the middle class and the poor. They are the same arrogant, greedy and unscrupulous politicians that tow the line for the likes of the Koch brothers, Sheldon Adelson and others, but wearing sheep skins as Halloween costumes until after Nov. 6, when the true RR will emerge once again.
Republican voters know their latest strategy is a con job to convince the naive, and they put up with it holding their noses, until the day after the election.

I agree with much of what you said Clarence…but I’m not sure protective tariffs are the way to go now. Maybe it was back in post-colonial days when our industries were small and had to compete with the superpower of industrial manufacturing and exports, Great Britain. And it was the Smoot-Hawley protectionist tariffs bill that Congress passed sometime after the Wall Street panic and stock market crash of late 1929…that made the economic downturn in America turn into a world-wide trade war of retaliatory tariffs…and resulted in the Great Depression…The ‘fair’ part of NAFTA was not really enforced much with our South of the Border neighbor(s?). I’m sure Canada behaved because, well…they’re Canadians. There are many other more effective ‘tax-related’ cures to deal with our loss of manufacturing base and jobs. Starting with elimination of tax breaks for sending those jobs overseas. I was a little stunned to read some time back that many auto manufacturing jobs had been moved into Canada…because their universal health care plan made the cost of making cars cheaper…?….Private group insurance premiums and health care costs per unit/car as a labor cost of manufacturing were that much higher in the USA than in Canada. Maybe that will start changing with ACA (Obamacare).

We can only hope, the far right is not a good place to be. If Mitt gets in and he has to choose a supreme court judge, (which is very likely) we know it will be a very conservative one and there goes all the issues we hold dear. Roe versus Wade, separation of church and state, guns laws and many more that will change the dynamics of this country.

For all those undecideds out there—if you can’t make up your mind, vote on which party you wish to nominate the next Supreme court justice. A vote for a Republican president, who will install the 5th conservative, young justice, will alter our country in untold ways for perhaps 40 years. Think about the effect of the Citizens United ruling, and just imagine as to what will follow. If you are older and have youngish daughters, think about their uteruses, their opportunities in the work place, and how long they will have to work to reach retirement. If Social Security and medicare are given a drastic overhaul, so people can save for their own retirement as “freedom of choice”–you need about $500,000 minimum in your 401K to retire if you do not have a company pension or if SS is decimated, and Medicare is a voucher. So, seniors, do you see your 30 year old offspring saving that much money?
I’m glad the election will be over soon. I have been sleeping poorly with the spectre of Romney, et. al. I want put out of my misery with a decision already.

so as we are saying, the placement of a supreme court judge carries so many possibilities and some we don’t want to think about. Think about the abortion issue under a conservative court, a fetus will now become a person at the moment of conception and that in itself is disastrous. All forms of birth control will be banned, all abortions will be banned, rape will be an act of God and the male part will get a pat on the back. These are some very scary possibilities to ponder.

It should scare everyone to witness the shape shifting of Romney. He comes across as a total product of his handlers. As if he ‘s asking —where am I today, to whom am I speaking and what do I believe? His practice as a businessman is to ask for, and pour over, numerous amounts of data, loking for certainty before making his decision. How will that style translate to numerous crises at random times landing at his feet, requiring decisive action?. We already got a taste of him speaking without having the facts, to embarrass the current president, but if he is in that position, how long will he take to make a decision, if there is no “certainty”? The issues a President gets are not the same as reading balance sheets. For all the bragging about his business savvy and understanding how the economy works, I’m not sure his practice is the right skill set for the versatility needed as POTUS.

Mitt despises the Tea party and knows their agenda is a looser. The TP comes from states with limited populations except for TX but they are a riduculos state anywway. Think about it they gave us Bush II and Karl Rove. The majority of the population lives in the Blue states. and that is also where the national news media is HQ ed. The tea party is in trouble in every state that they have some control and people realize their obcession with sex, and women’s reproductive rights is at best unhealthy. When they try to enact some of their polices there is a backlash, like was seen in Wisconson and Va., states that Obama will now win preciesley because of TP antics. The bottom line is the republiCON party bet on America turning against immigration and the change we have seen over the last 30 years in our demographics. This is all part of the long term plan put in place 30 years ago by reagun. It involved opening the doors of immigration, selling out technology and manufacturing to the highest bidder and lowering our way of living in order to break the unions and allow the pillaging of American workers to support the ridiculous salaries that upper management commands today.

The chickens have come home to roost. Too many hard working people have been put out of work and too many highly educated people have been put into place and they simply cannot deliver.

This is a perfect storm for the republiCON party and their racist beliefs. They figure this is the opportune time to turn America against people that have immigrated over the last 30 years and that they can use them at the same time as tools to break the unions and lower our standard of living to that of the average Chinese worker.

This is why the John Birch Society and the koch family have taken over the republiCON party.

This is also why it is time for the elimination of the republiCON party as any influence on our way of life.

On November 7th after President Obama is reelected by a landslide, it will be time to get out the tar and feathers.

Excellent point! However, what you have mentioned is only the beginning. The neo-conservatives have been waiting for eighty years to dismantle FDR’s policies and fifty years to scrap those of Lyndon Johnson. So say goodbye to Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, food stamps, welfare, unemployment insurance, civil rights, voting rights, integrated schools, and public broadcasting. Say hello to blatantly monopolistic business practices, mass offshoring of jobs, collusion, graft, and anything else that the Supreme Court can rule on that will make the wealthy wealthier and the poor poorer (no middle class, sad to say). The Constitution will be shredded, and no Presidential election will be able to reconstruct the U.S. for decades to come–if elections are even held. The only hope for renewing America will be Constitutional amendments to undo the damage a far-right-wing court will do.

following up on the 2010 election results, we need to recognize that the left-to-right shift was an illusion produced by journalistic laziness that goes no further than looking at percentages to ‘analyze’ data. if you look at actual vote counts it quickly becomes apparent that the ‘swing’ can be explained entirely by dems sitting out the election.

in 2009 and 2010, dems lost 22 races for governor or US senator in states obama carried. in 20 of those 22, the winner got fewer votes than mccain got in losing the same state. (obama outpolled the winners of the other 2 races too.) the only possible way that could happen is if a lot of obama voters did not vote in those subsequent elections.

turnout is everything. if dems vote, dems win. if women vote, women win.

And if you listen to what some of the analysts are saying, the early voting EXIT POLLS are trending dramatically toward Obama. On the other hand, if you listen to what some of the people with OVERSIGHT (able to compare current vote counts with those exit poll numbers) are saying, THEY are seeing variances, discrepancies which are raising flags re the credibility of the Voting Machines themselves. Expect litigation if this isn’t resolved before “early voting” turns into “November 6th, 2012: the Day that will Live in Infamy”…

While the “new and improved” far far right has NOT managed to swing (and spin) Romney into his “throne”, we must NOT become complacent — in particular, the level of irrationality and rising frustration warrants an increase in vigilance against Teabagger-inspired acts of desperation — there are VISIBLY disturbed individuals reacting much like prodded fire-ants, looking for opportunities to “set things ‘right’ which have gone so ‘wrong’ after all that buildup”… And that vigilance debateably should be applied “across the board”, because while the Democrats are ostensibly responsible for the campaign’s “letdown”, Romney’s “highly public burning of the right’s catechism” could easily be construed (if the weirdness holds constant) as a denunciation which ALSO merits “retribution”…

All of which can be rephrased as “there are a lot of frustrated wackjobs wandering around out there looking for targets of opportunity — don’t get complacent, and don’t forget a little bit of paranoia can be worthwhile — sometimes they ARE out to get you.”

There are a lot of good Republicans who should have been in the running this year. I believe they have chosen not to run until the next election thus leaving the party with a dismal representative that is costing billions of dollars to get elected.

I consider E. J. Dionne a very wise and pinpoint commentator. His political affiliation has nothing to do with it. He exhibits years of knowledge, experience and a vast degree of political savvy and acumen. One can usually take his word to the bank because his political forecasts usually turn out to be true. Republicans are banking on propagandized Romney lies to get them into the White White. They are not interested in truth, morals or values. The only thing they are interested in is absolute and total political power. They have sold American a bill of lies and are hoping that Americans are dumb enough to swallow it hook, line and sinker. The sad reality is that there are many who are taking the bait.
