Liz Cheney’s 5 Most Extreme Statements

Liz Cheney has announced that she will challenge three-term senator Mike Enzi (R-WY) in Wyoming’s Republican primary next year. Despite her high profile, Cheney will face an uphill battle; in both 2002 and 2008, Enzi was easily re-elected with over 70 percent of the vote.

Cheney is not going to let Enzi’s popularity affect her aspiration to represent Wyoming. To the chagrin of many of her GOP colleagues, Cheney has been hitting the campaign trail — popping up at chicken dinners and cattle growers’ meetings across the state. As rumors of a Republican “civil war” swirl, all eyes are on the Wyoming Senate primary, which may be a problem for the gaffe-prone Cheney.

As bloggers wait for the sure-to-come extreme comments from Liz Cheney, we thought it prudent to look back at her past zingers. Here five quotes that show that Cheney would fit right in with congressional Republicans:

‘You’re Right, Obama… You’re No Dick Cheney’

In an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity, Cheney responded to President Obama’s statement that he is very much unlike her father, former vice president Dick Cheney. “To give the president some credit, he continues to feel the need to proclaim that he’s not Dick Cheney. And you know, every time I hear him say that, I’ve got to say, ‘You’re right, absolutely.'” Cheney continued, “This president is nowhere near the man or the leader that Dick Cheney is.”

Hannity asked what the former vice president thinks of President Obama’s statements. Ms. Cheney answered, “He laughed. My dad is a man of honor, a man of integrity, a man who’s got the courage of his convictions, a man who clearly understood and understands today what it takes to make this nation strong, to keep the American people secure.”

‘Obama Refuses To Take On The Threat Of Terrorism’

Cheney on Hannity

In another interview with Hannity, Cheney made absurd claims about the president’s supposed lack of leadership in combating terrorism: “It’s really difficult to describe how dangerous it is for the United States to be led by a man like Barack Obama, who’s doing everything he can not only to weaken us at home, to weaken us abroad, but now he’s essentially retreating. He has given up. He’s accepting defeat, he’s walking away, he’s refusing to follow through in terms of the necessity to rid the world and the United States of the threat posed by al Qaeda.”

Cheney’s paranoia continued in an op-ed she wrote for the Wall Street Journal in March. She asserted that “President Obama is the most radical man ever to occupy the Oval Office,” warning that “if we don’t defend our freedoms now against the onslaught of President Obama’s policies, we won’t have to wait until our sunset years for American freedom to be a distant memory,” as well as justifying Republican obstruction by saying that “preventing this president from enacting devastating policies is not obstructionism. It is patriotism.”

‘Justice Department Is The Department of Jihad’

Liz Cheney’s advocacy group Keep America Safe released this ad targeting the Justice Department and Attorney General Eric Holder. The ad questions who Holder hired to try accused terrorists. “So who did President Obama’s attorney general Eric Holder hire? Nine lawyers who represented or advocated for terrorist detainees.”

The narrator continues, “Who are these government officials? Eric Holder will only name two. Why the secrecy behind the other seven? Whose values do they share? Tell Eric Holder, Americans have the right to know the identity of The Al-Qaeda 7.”

Nineteen officials from the Bush administration came out to condemn Cheney and her group’s ad, calling it a “shameful series of attacks…both unjust to the individuals in question and destructive of any attempt to build lasting mechanisms for counterterrorism adjudications.”

Cheney Can’t Settle The Birther Issue

During an interview with CNN’s Larry King, Cheney refused to admit that President Obama is an American citizen. King played a video of a town hall meeting in Delaware with former representative Mike Castle (R-DE) where a constituent asked Castle why everyone is ignoring President Obama’s birth certificate, and asserting that he is a citizen of Kenya. Cheney responded, “I think that the Democrats have got more crazies than the Republicans do, but setting that aside, I think that one of the reasons I think you see people so concerned about this issue is people are uncomfortable with having for the first time ever I think a president who seems so reluctant to defend the nation overseas.”

James Carville responded to her attempt at an excuse: “These poor, pathetic people who believe this stuff, just like Ms. Cheney tonight, she refuses to say this is ludicrous because she actually wants to encourage these people who believed it.”

Still, Cheney tiptoed around a response and in the end refused to deny the “birther conspiracy.”

‘Sarah Palin More Qualified Than Obama And Biden’

LizCheneytweet

After Dick Cheney told ABC News that 2008 presidential hopeful John McCain’s (R-AZ) choice of Sarah Palin (R-AK) for vice president was “a mistake,” Liz Cheney tweeted, “Rarely do I disagree with best VP ever but Sarah Palin more qualified than Obama and Biden combined. Huge respect 4 all she’s done 4 GOP.” It’s no surprise that a faction of the GOP still supports Sarah Palin, but for Liz Cheney to disagree with her severely conservative father demonstrates just how extreme she actually is.

At a press conference on Tuesday, March 26, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore told reporters that there was no sign of terrorism or foul play in the collapse of Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge — which had been struck by a freighter. According to Moore and the Biden White House, there was no indication that it was anything other than a tragic accident.
