Mitt Romney Releases Birth Certificate

Donald Trump appears to have a special talent for getting presidential candidates to release their birth certificates.

On the same day that he appeared at a fundraiser with the birther conspiracy theorist, Mitt Romney released an official copy of his birth certificate — a little over a year after President Obama did the same.

Romney’s campaign released the birth certificate to Reuters on Tuesday night. It confirms that Willard Mitt Romney was born in Detroit on March 12, 1947, and that his father George was born in a Mormon colony in Mexico. The elder Romney faced a birther-style controversy when he ran for president in 1968, and insisted that he was “natural-born” because both of his parents were U.S. citizens at the time of his birth.

While Obama released his birth certificate to rebuff birthers, Romney seemingly released his to seek their approval. After all, there had been no popular movement demanding to see proof of Romney’s citizenship, and according to Michael Cohen — special counsel to Trump — The Donald had no intention of starting one.

“I don’t think (Trump) has ever thought about Mitt Romney’s father’s birth certificate,” he told Reuters.
