Jefferson was an extreme progressive for his time. He espouse many ideas such as free education and the belief that all men should be given public lands to equalize the gap between rich and poor. He got rid of the laws of primogeniture. Like many founding fathers, he didn’t want to establish an aristocacy in America. Like Paine, he was a Deist who questioned the divinty of Jesus and wrote the “Jeffersonian Bible, the Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth,” in which he said Jesus was a great philosopher, but not the son of God and stated there were no miracles; no virgin birth, no resurrection. In his book, he called the twelve Apostles a “gang of dupes and imposters,” and St. Paul “the first corrupter of the Gospels.”

There was no federal income tax in the colonies, but taxes are necessary to run a country. The colonies instituted draconian excise taxes, taxes on customs and duties, tariffs, “head” taxes or poll taxes on each adult male, taxes based on occupation, import and export taxes on Southern colonies, i.e. for the slave trade. And the most notorious tax rebellion in American History. No, not the Boston Tea Party. That was for taxation without representation. This was the first genuine tea party event, the Whiskey Rebellion which was levied on whiskey makers and that Washinton, himself, rode into and killed the leaders of the revolt.

And, yes, I do often listen to snippets of Glenn Beck online. His conspiracy theories are always so entertaining and remind me of the hilarious, nutball speculations of Art Bell.

Roz… there were a number of writers and philosophers who influenced the founders and our Constitution. Adam Smith was one. de Montesquieu, John Locke, Socrates, The Bible…. all were HUGE influences. But that’s beside the point.

You claimed that Jefferson supported a “progressive income tax” when in fact he did not. Other than the letter he wrote to Madison in October of 1785, he never espoused it in fact or in principle following that.

How can you can say that one of the primary authors of the Constitution, along with Madison, supported a progressive income tax when America did not even have an income tax until 1913? It’s simply not plausible, nor believable. For if the authors of the Constitution actually wanted an income tax of ANY form, they would have written it into the document. They did not. Period. End of story.

And Thomas Paine was known to have gone crazy in his latter years. But his book “Common Sense” was his written defense of why the states needed to ratify the Constitution. As to what Beck says or does not say about Paine, I don’t care. He’s entitled to his own opinion just like you or I.

Roz… I am surprised you listen to Glenn Beck’s radio show! WOW! I’m impressed.

Adam Smith was quoted frequently by Benjamin Franklin especially and his tax quote was used by Thomas Jefferson. As for Thomas Jefferson being in France, he still advocated a progressive view on taxation. And I’m surprise you, yourself, are advocating any readings by Thomas Paine. I thought right-wingers had disavowed him over his debunking of the bible in “The Age of Reason.” I noticed Glenn Beck abruptly distanced himself from Paine and never mentioned him again after his book, “Glenn Beck’s Common Sense,” when a caller to his radio show brought up the subject of Paine’s Judeo-Christian bashing book.

Your assertion about Jefferson is a common leftist trick, taking one thing the guy wrote in a letter to James Madison in 1875 while in France. What he was writing about was the inequality that existed IN FRANCE under The King. These were his ruminations while on a walk and encountering a women who was poor under their system. In reality, everything Jefferson did and said as a founder and then as President was in exact opposition to such ruminations. The same goes for Thomas Pain. Go read “Common Sense” please.

One Conservative’s Beliefs
1. The Constitution of the United States contains the law of the land and should be defended and honored(yes, above ‘progress’). There’s never been anything like it in history.
2. Taking from one person at the point of a gun in order to give to another person is immoral. Government doesn’t do charity very well.
3. The economy is not a zero-sum game. My success in no way impedes anybody else’s success.

Buffet and Obama are pressing for higher taxes for the wealthy, even though they say it’ll take a hit in their pocketbooks. Buffet suggested the Buffet Rule, which is a bill in congress now that would be a progressive tax on the wealthy, making taxes higher the more someone makes. A progressive tax after all, is nothing new. Founding fathers Adam Smith, Thomas Jefferson and Thomas Paine beleived in progressive taxes and an estate tax. Google “Progressive taxes and Thomas Jefferson.” “Progressive tax and Adam Smith.” “Progressive Tax and Thomas Paine.” Even though these men had relative wealth, they still believed in the rich paying their fair share.

O, I think you’ve twisted a few relevant facts. Obama isn’t a great powerful speaker. He needs a teleprompter to speak to his kids, remember? At least, that’s what Fox and the right wing echo chamber say. I wish you’d make up your minds. I doubt Hitler had a teleprompter. Obama’s birth records weren’t sketchy. Only to conspiracy theorists. The NSA, FBI and CIA vetted them carefully and decided a bunch of Cletuses yammering that they were Kinko copies didn’t pass the smell test. A golden tongue? Evidently not. Hitler cowed his oposition into following him. Republicans have killed Obama’s budgets and jobs plans in committee. Hitler hated big businesses and banks? No, he hated the opposite. He arrested unionist and those who tried to get fair wages for workers. Remember this quote? “First, they came for the Communists, but I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a Communist. Then, they came for the trade unionists, but I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a trade unionist…?”

Obama had a very impressive resume as an outstanding student, despite clamoring from the right wing to see his grades. I guess graduating with a magna cum laude doesn’t penetrate their fuzzy heads. It means you graduated with at least a grade point average of 3.6. Obama wrote two books and several articles, peer reviewed journals and law magazine reviews that received wide acclaim. Your contention about Hitler’s religion? Hitler was raised Catholic and served time as an altar boy. He considered becoming a priest. He spent his life advocating his Christian faith, imprinting “Gott mitt uns” in Nazi uniforms. God is with us. He hated atheists, associating them with “bolsheviks” and rounding them up.

Obama is nothing like Hitler. Hitler never married or had children. He was never highly educated. Unlike Obama, who admitted to youthful consumption of alcohol and drugs, Hitler was a strict teetotler and never used drugs until his last 18 months of life. He was a homeless vagabond at one time in his life, living in mens’ shelters. He wasn’t a communist, as Obama is accused of being. He persecuted communists and send many to the gas chambers. Your contention that Obama never joined any organizations is false. Obama joined many organizations and even presided and was a board member over some. Such as his bar associations; President, Harvard Law Review, board member, Joyce Foundation and I’m sure you know he was a community organizer. He worked with organizations such as The United Way; Catholic Charities; the Red Cross; nutrition centers for the elderly. The Police Dept.’s Blue Santa project for poor children’s Christmas. Another thing: Hitler was a member of the biggest majority group in his country, so he was able to whip them up into a ready army. Obama is a member of an unpopular minority group.

So, a great many of your “facts” are twisted, down right erroneous and filled with personal bias. It’s the six degrees of Kevin Bacon.
