Bitter Newt's New Self-Appointed Role: Kamikaze Anti-Mitt Bomber

Update: In his post-Iowa caucus concession speech, having fallen to fourth place and essentially dropping out of contention, Newt doubled down on his negative, destroy-Mitt strategy:

We’ll have — one other great debate and that is whether this party wants a Reagan conservative who helped change Washington in the 1980s with Ronald Reagan and helped change Washington in the 1990s as Speaker of the House, or we want a Massachusetts moderate who, in fact, will be pretty good at managing the decay but has given no evidence in his years in Massachusetts of any act to change the culture or change the political structure or change the government.

Let me be clear, because I think it’s important given all the things that were done in this state over the last few weeks. We are not going to go out and run nasty ads. We’re not going to run 30-second gotchas. But I do reserve the right to tell the truth and if the truth seems negative, that may be more a comment on his record than it is on politics. So this is going to be a debate that begins tomorrow morning in New Hampshire and and will go on for a few months, and I’m convinced that the Republican party will pick an era of Reagan and somebody with a track record of changing Washington.

Without a realistic shot at the nomination, Gingrich clearly just wants to make sure Romney has no fun, either. Here’s the video:

So much for Newt Gingrich’s positive campaign.

In an interview with Norah O’Donnell on CBS’ “The Early Show” Tuesday morning, Gingrich called Republican frontrunner Mitt Romney a liar, and claimed that he would stand no chance against President Obama in a general election.

Video of the interview is below, courtesy of CBS. Gingrich begins ranting against Romney at the 3:10 mark:“I have to ask you, are you calling Mitt Romney a liar?” O’Donnell asks in the video.

“Yes,” Gingrich replies. “This is a man whose staff created the [Restore Our Future] PAC, his millionaire friends fund the PAC, he pretends he has nothing to do with the PAC – it’s baloney. He’s not telling the American people the truth.”

“It’s just like this pretense that he’s a conservative,” Gingrich continues. “Here’s a Massachusetts moderate who has tax-paid abortions in ‘Romneycare,’ puts Planned Parenthood in ‘Romneycare,’ raises hundreds of millions of dollars of taxes on businesses, appoints liberal judges to appease Democrats, and wants the rest of us to believe somehow he’s magically a conservative.”

Gingrich concluded his brutal attack by claiming that Romney “will not survive against the Obama machine,” and that in a general election Obama “will just tear [Romney] apart.”

Despite Gingrich’s hostility towards Romney, he still told CBS that he would vote for the former Massachusetts governor over Obama — which is a commitment that he wouldn’t make for Texas Rep. Ron Paul, who is also polling ahead of Gingrich in Iowa.

At a press conference on Tuesday, March 26, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore told reporters that there was no sign of terrorism or foul play in the collapse of Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge — which had been struck by a freighter. According to Moore and the Biden White House, there was no indication that it was anything other than a tragic accident.
