So called "assault" weapons are EXACTLY what the 2nd amendment protects. It says nothing about shooting a deer, but everything about the people having the right to keep and bear militia-style arms. If you think banning these will stop crazed murderers or save lives you are dead wrong. Banning guns doesn't fix crazy. If you save "just one life" by limiting the firepower of legally accessible weapons 2 things will happen: 1) criminals will utilize the black market for weapons (just like that marijuana stuff that we no longer have in this country thanks to a ban) 2) Citizens who use arms in self-defense to prevent crimes between 107,000 - 2,500,000 times per year will find themselves less able to defend themselves in an attack by a criminal (happens all the time), by foreign invaders (China is looking at our resources and the world isn't getting bigger), or-God forbid-by our own government taken over by tyrants who shred the Constitution and our rights. The NRA is quickly growing in membership as a result of all this and will continue to flourish because of this. Don't be fooled by what they tell you on TV.

That argument is slightly shortsighted. Anyone with children they wish safety for should be in favor of improved public safety - not gun laws specifically or for their own sake. Let's look at mental health. Let's strengthen background checks to include immediate family members at the same address. Let's look at logistical solutions to providing for background checks for all sales. But let's not jump straight to banning out of emotion. It's easy to argue that a right does not extend to specific types of firearms, but it doesn't matter for millions of Americans who care about their children just as much as you if the Ar-15 is the rifle they want to own - perhaps out of patriotism, perhaps because it was their former service rifle and was much beloved, perhaps because they just want it for fun. It doesn't change the fact that these are law abiding Americans just like the rest of us, and their rights are not our plaything in a Crusade over tragically dead children. Let's solve this problem in every way OTHER than the removal of rights before we look to those. Is this not more agreeable to everyone in the end?

Then as another firearms owner being vilified and forced to defend myself in this country, I urge you to protect all our rights as all of us will gladly do for you. No, not to the point of inaction. Just consider and urge Congress towards options short of a ban before going that route. Let's face it, the AR-15 today is an American symbol as much as the M1 Garand and 1903 Springfield. MANY law abiding Americans wish to and choose to own one or more for that reason alone. They are used for hunting, particularly hogs which can be dangerous and in groups and varmints where the light, flat shooting bullets and fast follow up shots are great. They are also competition guns, and these competitions are the lifeblood of our up and coming generation of firearms owners and enthusiasts. Please consider and respect us as we will for you. I do not agree with the NRA's stance today any more than many, and I hope they compromise to allow for a more solid background check, perhaps including immediate family at the same address, etc, to help the safety of our country. But it doesn't change the fact that there are many who would love to simply ban guns. Yes, we both know that will not happen I'm anything but paranoid about it - I'm just a competitive shooter who wants my passion in life to stop being marginalized and possibly criminalized over the actions of a small handgun of very evil, insane men.

The NRA is losing support of its leaders' public statements - do not mistake that for loss of power. Millions in this country - around half of it, in fact - do not support further gun laws and will fight them. The NRA is their voice on Capitol Hill, and their voice remains very strong.

Also, please don't fall for the "common sense" claptrap of these articles. They are clearly biased and call only opinions in line with theirs "common sense" while anything else is extreme right nonsense, etc. Again, around half this country does not think further gun legislation is the answer. That can't be extreme, by definition. If you want real solutions you and others should be looking at the options that do not take rights from our fellow Americans first, and only looking to restrict those rights as a last resort. There is MUCH to be done before we get to that point, so there's no sense accusing your political opponents of aggressive tactics or extremism when it's their rights, not yours (well, yours as well, but you choose not to use them - your choice and nobody wants to take that from you...) at stake. And don't bring "kids are dead so those rights must go" into this. That's a naive argument and unfair to the families who lost loved ones, and the dead themselves. Let's work together to find solutions.

Can't you post anything without using cuss words especially f--k? You can get your point across very well without cuss words, you demean what you are posting by using the f--k word in just about every sentence. You have had good points in some of your posting but that one word you like to use keeps people from reading your posts. I always quit reading after the first sentence most of the time because of that one word.

And I thank you for your service, Warren. But that doesn't mean that your opinion is more relevant than someone else's. Especially someone who, in the main, agrees with you. Of course all children deserve to be protected. Why do you single out children in Iraq? What about children in Afghanistan, Syria, Egypt, India, Palestine, Israel . . . the world? I suspect your objection to Mimi2kool's post had more to do with the reference to the NRA.

Your point is very easily missed. Just what is it? It comes off sounding like "if you can't protect children all over the world you shouldn't worry about protecting children in our country. And the last thing I would ever listen to, if at all is Fox News. Make your point clearer and maybe people would get it.

Is that what you do? And tell me, just how do you protect all children? By writing snarky notes? Hell, I can do that. But let me know how you protect all children. That sounds like a rather large task. I don't understand you and nobsartist. I believe in protecting the children I can and I encourage others to do the same, but I can't protect them all. By your reasoning, if I can't protect the children in Iraq then I shouldn't worry about protecting the children in this country.
