NRA Chief Says Group Accepts Background Checks

January 17th, 2013 12:25 pm Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — The head of the National Rifle Association says the organization has no problem with tighter background checks of gun purchasers.

But association president David Keene also says too much emphasis has been placed on banning certain firearms.

In an interview on “CBS This Morning” Thursday, Keene argues, quote, “The real question that needs to be addressed is not what we do about guns, but what we do to make our schools safer.”

The NRA has come under close scrutiny in the wake of Newtown, Conn., shootings that killed 20 children and six adults.

Keene said officials should focus more attention on a “devastatingly broken mental health system in this country,” if they genuinely want to end gun violence.

He said the NRA has been “generally supportive” of stronger background checks.

Banning certain weapons isn’t a very good answer to the problem of keeping firearms out of the hands of mental incompetents & criminals.

One obstacle is the 50 sets of firearms laws in the states, no two are in agreement with each other.

Since the 2nd Amendment rights everyone is sqwaking so loudly about come from a Federal document then why is it the individual states have their own sets of rules & laws?

What if there were one licensing authority at the Federal level. A CCW holder could move from state to state without violating local laws for one thing. Having one licensing authority & one set of law would reduce the strawman purchases that are the source of firearms getting to the criminals.

But here is the hook, keeping the guns away from nuts. Yes I know a lot would say the gun nuts are the ones we want to get the guns away from but that is not the objective is it.

Keeping guns away from crazies requires a centrel clearing house where all diagnosis codes related to an individuals mental state are captured. These would come from any bill submitted to an insurance company who would then forward that data to the licensing authority. Then they could decide to confiscate the guns if there are any accessable in their residence.

So if you live with a crazy or a felon or a druggie, drunk or domestic abuser you’ll have to surrender your weapons until that individual is no longer a resident, then you can have them back.

SO the reality is Obamacare can help solve this problem.
