Obama: Consensus For More Checks For Gun Buyers

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is emphasizing the need for more background checks for gun buyers in his State of the Union address, saying that overwhelming majorities of Americans favor the proposal as a way to keep firearms from criminals.

Obama said Tuesday night that senators from both parties are working on legislation to prevent people from legally buying guns and then giving them to criminals.

He said police chiefs want lawmakers to ban “weapons of war” and magazines carrying large amounts of ammunition so law enforcement officers won’t be outgunned.

The president proposed all those ideas after the December killings of 20 first-graders in Connecticut. But expanded background checks is the only one he described as having vast support — a description that matches public polling and reflects congressional sentiment too.

    While I agree background checks are good and licensing every firearms owner and user would be better. I am against any banning of any firearm or high capacity magazine. Police are not outgunned. Many carry AR15s or M16s in their cars. It only takes one shot to kill someone. Training is the way to go. The Second Amendment was made so we could protect ouselves from a rogue government. When it was written they used state of the art muzzle loaders. Today the same would be a M16s. Most killings done in the cities and towns are done with handguns. Most victims aren’t armed. We have allowed the mentally ill out and allowed them to wander among us without supervision. We have let gangs wander our streets. We hide behind closed doors and hear and see nothing because of fear. I have heard, in some cities you can find a gun behind every bush. People should grow a spine and turn in the guns and the people that hid them behind the bush. You aren’t free until you can stand up for yourself.
