Obama Praises Nominees For SEC, Consumer Panel

January 26th, 2013 11:03 am Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama says his picks for two top posts will crack down on those whose irresponsible behavior threatens the U.S. economy and the middle class.

In his weekly radio and Internet address, Obama praises his nominee to lead the Securities and Exchange Commission, Mary Jo White, and his pick for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Richard Cordray.

Obama says White, a former federal prosecutor, will help reform Wall Street. He says Cordray will be a champion for American consumers and is imploring the Senate to confirm him.

Obama installed Cordray last year through a recess appointment after Senate Republicans opposed his nomination.

In the Republican address, South Dakota Sen. John Thune says the Senate must pass a budget that addresses out-of-control spending to stave off another credit-rating downgrade.

“What if everyone acted that way?” It’s a question my Sainted Grandmother ask me. It didn’t
sink in right away. But it turns out, it is one of the most important questions we could ask
ourselves as we go about our various roles as parents, wives, husbands, or citizens of our
Country. If we didn’t vote, or we cheated on our taxes, drove drunk, or threw garbage out of
our cars. What if everyone acted that way? Is that the kind of world we would want to have?
I seems to me the people representing the Right Wing of our politics today have forgotten to
ask themselves that question. What if they were the majority, and the Country had challenges
wherever one looked. But their opposition on the Left, decided they had no obligation to help.
So, they were free to spend every hour of the day obstructing, holding up, casting false allegations,
poisoning the relations between leaders, and their counterparts, between leaders and their people.
What kind of Country would we have, if everyone acted that way?
