Obama Urges Congress To Head Off Spending Cuts

February 23rd, 2013 1:03 pm Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama says a little compromise is all Congress needs to turn off automatic, across-the-board budget cuts set to kick in a week from now.

In his weekly radio and Internet address, Obama says the cuts will slow the economy and hurt the middle class. He says thousands of teachers will be laid off and air traffic controllers will be forced into unpaid leave, leading to airport delays. He says almost 800,000 defense workers will also face furloughs.

Obama says he wants a balanced plan to deal with the deficit that mixes spending cuts with more tax revenue.

In the Republican address, Sen. John Hoeven of North Dakota says Obama should approve the Keystone XL oil pipeline, which would carry oil from Canada to Texas, as a way to create jobs and grow the economy.

  • Sick of everything

No to the XL pipeline, and all Congress has to do to stop the sequester is to repeal it. Pretty simple way to avoid cuts and start over. Then the Pres needs to put his foot up some GOP asses.

It would be nice if the media and politicians would quit blowing this thing out of proportion. We are talking 2.3% of government spending $3.8 trillion spending vs $85 billion in cuts. It’s $2.30 per $100.00 If you lose $2.30 out of 100 dollar bill are you going to jump off a bridge because the lose is devastating???? Nobody that looks seriously at government spending would believe their is not 2.3% waste, fraud and or fat in ALL agency budgets.

Media and partisans – both sides are making mountain out of a ant hill to feed their followers.

The recent statement made by the Speaker of the House, in which he acknowledged the devastating consequences of the sequester, but asserted that he does not plan to stop it, says it all. An across the board budget cut that would, by necessity, result in layoffs, furloughs, and salary and benefit cuts, is the last thing our country – or any country – needs. We need investment to grow and remain competitive. Austerity has never worked in the long run. Take a look at what is happening in Europe. That’s what will happen in the USA if the Tea Party manages to push their agenda forward, and we will have nobody to blame but ourselves for letting it happen.
For starters, we should interrogate those who acknowledge they know their plan will destroy our economy, charge them with treason, and prosecute them accordingly.
