Don't you remember how the Republicans filibustered everything that Obama and the Dems tried to do? Even though the American people had delivered a mandate to the Democratic Party, the Republicans went against the wishes of the people and filibustered everything.Remember how they said their mission was to make Pres. Obama a one term Pres.? Remember how it would have taken a supermajority to get anything accomplished and the Dems didn't have enough votes for a supermajority? Remember how Republicans backed Pres. George W. Bush on everything and defended him on every issue? Then more recently they disowned him and didn't even invite him to the GOP convention because they realized the Dems were correct in what they had been saying about him. I think if you put Romney in office you're going to find out that he's just GWB on steroids. Then you can disinvite him to your 2016 GOP convention.

The Community Reinvestment Act was a piss in the wind. If there were no blind CDOs, none of this would have happened, even with CRA, even without Glass-Steagall, even with sub-prime mortgages. Here is the key - a blind investment has indeterminate value. When the underlying market collapses nobody knows what the blind investment is worth. Banks can handle assets of zero value, but cannot handle assets of indeterminate value.

The crash of 2008 was caused by the failure of the blind Collateralized Debt Obligation market. It was Chris Cox, appointed by G W Bush as Chair of the SEC, who allowed these dangerously insecure investments to be created. It was the repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act, led by Republicans, that allowed banks and investment houses to commingle funds, so that whatever crash hit the one would take down the other. It was Republican non-enforcement of anti-trust law that allowed some banks to get too big to be safely dismantled in bankruptcy. It was the Bush Tax Cuts that created a deficit of a trillion dollars per year. It was the unnecessary Bush War in Iraq that created additional deficit spending of a trillion dollars more per year. The fact that $8T was added to the debt between 2001 and 2009 made it difficult to spend our way out of the crash on borrowed money. In order to deny that the Republicans are at fault for crashing the economy and throttling the recovery, you have to be incredibly ignorant of how such things work, or just delusional.

I used to read encyclopedias for fun. I am disgusted with the willful ignorance of the Right Wing. Nothing you hear on Right Wing Radio is correct. First they redefine words to mean something they do not, then they assert as facts statements that are simply not true, then they reason by invalid logic to preposterous conclusions, and then they excuse all that malarkey in the grounds that it is entertainment. There is, actually, only one set of facts. Things that have happened are facts. Evolution is a fact. Global warming is a fact. The Federal current account deficit is a fact. Anyone who says they know what someone else is thinking is either a liar or a fool. A liar, because they know mind-reading is impossible, or a fool, because they do not. Other pertinent facts: Social Security is exactly as safe as the dollar itself because it is backed by United States bonds. Taxes are at a 50 year low. Regulations have increased the last four years at the slowest rate in decades. The only gun law this Administration has made has extended carry rights of licensed owners into national parks and forests. Medicare is the most efficient health care insurance plan in the country, so any move to make it private will simply increase overheads, which must raise costs or decrease benefits or both. There is no such thing as a truly free market, just like there is no such thing as the frictionless surface. Both are classroom constructs used in education, not facts pertaining to real life. There is only one socialist in the US government, Senator Sanders from Vermont. There are no actual Communists in the US government. In fact there are very few Communists left anywhere, even in China and Cuba. The Laffer curve shows that the current top marginal tax rate is too low. Over one third of current deficits are due solely to the so-called Bush Tax Cuts, actually Republican Tax Cuts, still defended by remaining Republicans in Congress. The only way to balance the US books is to raise taxes. There is not enough non-Defense discretionary spending to cut it enough to balance the books by that step alone. Government is not a business and cannot be run successfully as if it were - that is why Republican Administrations have a poorer record of growing GDP than Democratic Administrations over the last 50 years. often made a mess of the US economy and national debt. I can continue for pages stating falsehoods that are conerstones of Republican policy. I will end with this - policy that is not based on fact must fail. Reality does not care what we believe.

I used the word cooked because that was the accusation. This has never been an analysis of why the numbers are not necessarily accurate and that these numbers might not be accurate because there are possibilities of sampling error, error by the reporting agents and mistakes in actually calculating the numbers. Frankly , I have always thought the numbers, if they had any value, it was in suggesting directions things may be going as you viewed them over time. The numbers are “estimates.” The people putting them out don’t say they are accurate beyond dispute. You apparently, insist on missing the point. The complaint by Republicans was never that the number might not be totally accurate or fail to tell a complete story of the economy. Their complaint was and always has been that any number produced if it favored the President must have been the result of some malfeasance on the part of someone. The reason is simple anything which appears to contradict their belief system cannot be true. Your position may be that these numbers may have noise in them. However, that isn’t a defense of their position or a criticism of my point. I re-read Mr. Pitt’s article. It wasn’t particularly a defense of “number crunchers” or an assertion that the number was accurate beyond dispute because it has its basis in mathematical operations. In a courtroom some would say your point is inapposite.
