Weekend Reader: ‘Deeply Divided: Racial Politics And Social Movements In Postwar America’

After years of dysfunction, the state of American politics is clear: Washington, D.C. is broken, and the public is too divided to fix it. How did we reach this desperate point? Doug McAdam and Karina Kloos of Stanford University answer this question in Deeply Divided: Racial Politics and Social Movements in Postwar America. Our extreme partisanship has less

all guns should be registered and licensed. Guns in gun collections barrels filled with steel. Limit of 2 guns per person. Ammunition sales SEVERELY restricted and taxed at $5 per bullet. Gun owners must be relicensed every 2 years. Gun owners who threaten anyone banned from owning firearms.

Frank. You totally miss the point. PEOPLE WHO KILL OTHER PEOPLE ARE BY NATURE UNLAWFUL (OUTLAWS). So THEY WILL OBTAIN WEAPONS BY UNLAWFUL MEANS. WHICH MEANS GUN LAWS DO NOT WORK. But if MAKERS AND SELLERS OF MULTPLE ROUND CLIPS WERE FOUND RESPONSIBLE ,THERE MIGHT BE TIGHTER CONTROL . As I remember, a BAR OWNER can be held responsible for death occurring from his sale of drink to a drunk. MANUFACTURERS THAT PROVIDE AUTOMATIC WEAPONS (of war) TO ANYONE OTHER THAN LAW ENFORCEMENT AND MILITARY SHOULD BE CLOSED DOWN

      Frank
      You are too extreme…..
Probably the kind of guy who tents his house when he sees one ant

There is NO LOGICAL need for such weapons, with the possible exception of law enforcement and the military. ANY “HUNTER” THAT CAN’T KILL AN UNARMED ANIMAL WITH 3 ROUNDS IS NOT MUCH OF A HUNTER,MUCH LESS A REASONABLE SHOT. TEN OR MORE ROUND CLIPS SHOULD BE BANNED. AND ANYONE SELLING OR MANUFACTURING THEM FOR ANYONE OTHER THAN ABOVE SHOULD ALSO BE IMPRISONED FOR 20 YEARS

The “people kill, guns don’t” is inane. Guns offer something people want: a “point-and-click” way to kill someone. Some would only kill an intruder, or use guns for hunting. Most have reasons they cannot openly voice, like how guns make them feel manly and in control. The Bushmaster site was offering “man cards” for those who answered their test questions to their liking. So denying that manliness isn’t heavily connected to gun-lust is lying.

Only military, police, hunters, farmers and ranchers – and a VERY few individuals with a unique need, have any need to own guns.

Home security can as easily be assured using pepper spray and mace – and maybe at times a taser. None are usually lethal, so a person wouldn’t hesitate to use them. The sprays cover a broad area, not requiring good aim. They are small, portable, inexpensive, and can be legally carried, even concealed. Yet in an instant, they can totally incapacitate a criminal. Trouble is, they aren’t manly enough.

The 2nd Amendment does NOT give individuals the right to “keep and bear arms.” It gives that right to “a well-regulated militia.” Not to any slob on the street.

Guns play on, and reinforce, callousness. Many love the idea of “hosing down” a bunch of people perceived as “bad guys.” Not one of these mass shooters would have done what they did if all they had access to was a knife. Too up-close and personal – and too risky.

We have lots of crazies. It isn’t just a matter of dealing with our crazies. It’s also a matter of who can have, or gain access to, GUNS.

We will always have crazies, no matter what we do. Crazies with guns, however, CAN be controlled. Not everyone should have a gun, and nobody should have one who hasn’t undergone thorough training. That’s a starting point. Over 13,000 people killed by guns every year shows that when gun-owners get mad, many will use their guns in the heat of the argument. It’s their way of “enforcing” their views, you see. Until they’re looking down at a corpse, and looking forward to lots of jailtime. Which is learning his lesson in a way that is too late for the corpse. Not even to mention the careless way guns are often stored, and kids get hold of them, and…

I do not believe gun control at this point is going to do any good (too many of them out there) and as citizens we are allowed to own guns to protect our life and freedom (take it from me that came from Cuba where one of the first things Castro did was remove guns from the hands of the citizens)

How many people die in automobile accidents? Should we outlaw private vehicles?

How many people die in boating accidents? Should we outlaw private boats? How about skateboards and motorcycles?

There are quite a few countries out there where people own guns, but do not seem to be killing each others with the gusto that we do. Is it our culture? Our access to violent video games and movies that glorify violence and slaughter?
How is that most our mass murderers are white middle class kids that should have had mental health care?

A couple of decades ago, in a fit of misguided humanity we eliminated most mental health hospitals…We need them back and we need to spend more money and resources in mental health care and background checks for those buying ANY kind of a gun

Cars and boats are regulated by local govts. They have to be insured, you have to have and use certain safety equipment – seat belts in cars, floatation vests in boats.
For cars you have to have a valid license and renew every 2 years ni my state. I don’t believe gunn control is the only answer, mental health care is another. I do believe that there is no need for a semi-automatic weapon (Bushmaster rifle for example) with a high capacity clip in the hands of ordinary citizen. You don’t hunt with this type of rifle.

Guns are manufactured for only one thing “to kill something”. Boats, automobiles, skateboards and motorcycles don’t even fit in the same category as guns. Gun owners use this same speech every time along with the “guns don’t kill people, people kill people” speech. Shouldn’t we put the home grown terrorist, racist, haters or paranoia individuals in with the mentally ill? Have your rifles or handguns for hunting and protection, but eliminate the assault weapons. There is no good explanation on using them except for the military or police. We need background checks on all guns. The only people that need to be afraid of this are the ones that have something to hide.

I agree 100% with your smart comments. I know you and your family sleep very peaceful
every night just by signing yes on the petition of reinstating the ban of assault weapons. If all the people that agree with the ban of assault weapons sign this petition President Obama will accomplish one of many challenges he faces. Our society and children will have a better chance of survive another massacre. From the bottom of my heart I want to thank you for your comment. Just to let you know my father was shot three times
on mother’s day 1980 while going to the grocery store.

Unfortunately, the corporate-owned Supreme Court ruled in District of Columbia v Heller that the right to bear arms in now an ‘individual right’, but even these tools were careful to say that the Second Amendment right is not unlimited, nor is it free from regulation. Until that decision is overturned or superseded, that is the current law of the land.

Whether or not any regulation will be effective is what is now hotly under debate.

NO ONE in government is remotely suggesting that all guns be confiscated; that premise is not only laughable, but an unrealistic solution as it would defy any and all efforts at enforcement, since there are currently 300 MILLION guns in the hands of private citizens. I pity the poor delusional fool that believes this is ever going to happen. Talk about rioting in the streets and utter anarchy – this country would immediately plunge into civil war. NOT going to happen – that would interfere with the corporate profit-driven agenda, which cannot thrive under such unstable conditions.

Only the lunatic fringe among gun owners go into a paranoid frenzy when even the mention of regulation is brought up, so any meaningful conversation with these people is simply not possible. Other than their mantra of ‘more guns everywhere’, they rarely offer ANY civil suggestions to this problem of gun violence. Those that mutate the President’s name into slurs cannot even be taken seriously; their blind hatred is so unreasonable, it defies logic. I am no fan of Obama’s, but I don’t need to lower myself to the kindergarten name-calling level to voice my dissension or disapproval of his policies. As much as I loathed the policies of previous presidents, of both parties, I did not need to disparage them on a personal level.

Those of us that are responsible gun owners do not object to such measures as background checks and safety measures, since it is likely that when we first decided to purchase guns, we understood their ownership automatically and implicitly came with responsible usage.

Solution to gun control without violating the constitution is Ban or Restrict ammo [bullet] sales!!!

Not listening to anymore of the same old crap from the right on guns. They spew the same thing and nothing changes. It’s time to let them know it is NOT all about them and we are taking our country back from these loons. I don’t even want to hear it anymore. We’ve seen how it works, another legacy of bush’

    ” Simple Solution”
GUN CONTROL? Total waste of time, the moneyed folks in foriegn as well as domestic firearms manufacturers have way to much power/money backed by the extremists of the NRA right-wing organization for laws by our people to get though. The real problem here is that nobody has ever trusted a central authority government and only feel partly in charge of their own life and fate if their armed against intrusions. Some will say only criminals need fear these Draconian measures, think you might want to remember historically disarming any population is always a prelude to unreasonable, police state laws, then you will think different. What has to happen here is Bubba to help the law pursue, take down, give up the crazies! Not fight on the side of child murders, or would be assassins and nut-jobs! The Bubba’s know more of these people then the normal no-gun-nut does, this veteran encourages you to use you’re position to quickly ID these dangerous-unbalanced folks, so these efforts solve the problem, without enraging and maybe engaging the population. To anyone who has bothered to read what the folks who wrote these amendments were thinking, they hated the idea of having a central authority because they read history, they knew how once given powers always ended up, Monarchy -Tyranny with a one state religion. It is why trying to even control weapons of great destruction will never be excepted! The schools these days teach no real idea of secular democracy, it has been so distorted to the people! Americans originally never wanted a central government because of these trust issues, so stop buying books from Texas, get with the authorities to ID those unfit and stop wasting time trying to disarm a paranoid state, it is never going to work! :)
