Sequester Could Kill 750,000 Jobs And Republicans Say It Will Happen

Around 750,000 jobs are at risk by the end of the year if the cuts from the sequestration — which is set to begin March 1st — goes into effect, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office.

“We think that would reduce the level of employment by the end of the year by about 750,000 jobs,” Doug Elmendorf, director of the CBO, told a House Budget Committee Hearing on Wednesday.

That’s a lot of jobs — about as many as the American economy was losing a month when President Obama took office in 2009.

The president has said he’s willing to accept a mix of new revenues and spending cuts to avert the automatic budget cuts that were agreed to during the debt limit negotiations in 2011. Senate Democrats are introducing a bill that includes $85 billion in savings that replicates the president’s offer. It would close loopholes for hedge-fund managers, corporate jets and more while cutting farm subsidies. In exchange they are asking for the sequester to be delayed for a year.

But congressional Republicans refuse to consider any tax increases, even if they come from closing loopholes on the rich or large corporations.

“It’s pretty clear to me that the sequester’s going to go into effect,” Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said Tuesday. “I have seen no evidence that the House plans to act on this matter before the end of the month.”

Most of the cuts in the sequester target the military. Democrats hoped this would be the lure to get Republicans to back away from automatic cuts. However, the cuts also hit 70,000 children now in Head Start. Thousands of school employees could lose their jobs. Small business loans would disappear.

Despite the threat of triggering a new recession, Republicans still feel that they have the “winning hand” in this situation.

    This is what the Republicans are counting on. They know full well that a recovering economy will be credited to President Obama’s leadership, and are desperate to prevent this. This is exactly the same strategy they pursued during Obama’s first term, and it didn’t work. In spite of their most strenuous efforts, the economy gained ground, and we had a slow and lackluster recovery. Now they’re doubling down.

    They HAVE to cause another depression that they can (attempt to) blame on the President, now, quickly, before the ’14 midterms. If the economy is still recovering when the elections come around, they’re toast and they know it. So they will do whatever it takes, even ignoring the demands of the Shadow Masters who have bought their souls, if that’s what it takes to survive. Because if they can’t at least preserve their House majority in ’14, when Hillary takes the field in ’16, they will be obliterated.

    However, they are betting heavily on the belief that the American people can’t see past the rhetorical smokescreen and be aware of what they’re doing. That is a forlorn hope, because the last election showed that the voters are quite aware of the nature of the Republican’s obstructionism and treasonous behavior. They said so loudly and clearly at the voting booth. And if the Republicans insist on inflicting greater pain upon them in an effort to retain their grip on power, the voters will speak again, even more loudly.

            Perhaps you’re ignorant of how the SCOTUS operates – they are an Appellate Court, in fact the highest Appellate Court in the land. They don’t take cases that have not come up through the appellate process. This is to say that they review cases which have already been adjudicated and are being challenged. The nonsensical story to which you allude has never been heard at any other court, and therefore would not be heard by the SCOTUS, which means that you’re too ignorant to know when you’re being fed a line.

They made it so defense would suffer the same amount of cuts as entitlements even though entilements are 63% of the Budget while defense spending is only around 22 %..What that means is the DEMs don’t care how much our National security suffers as long as they can keep their entitlement voters from freaking out. They banked on the fact that the Republicans would not want to leave the country defenseless. However if more and more of the budget gets shifted to being spent on entitlements just so their party can buy supporters then we will eventually have no money to do anything else anyway. They will bankrupt the Country just to make sure they can maintain their support from the entiltlemnt voters. I’m hoping the Republicans use Sequestration. It may be the only way Obama’s Mad spending gets stopped. It also may force the DEMS to do what they don’t want to do and that is PASS A BUDGET. They have failed to fullfill their legal duty since Obama took office becuase they don’t want to show Ameria how badly they have screwed us.

    My position was, Republicans get blamed for shutdowns. I argued that it is counter-intuitive to the average American to think that the Democrat wants to shut down the government. They’re the advocates of the government. It is perfectly logical to them that Republicans would shut it down, because we’re seen as antithetical to government. I said if there’s a shutdown, we’re going to get the blame.

    This is the biggest mistake the GOP could make and I suspect the result will be a House cleaning in 2014.

    Obama is the cause of MUCH HIGHER job losses …….his proposal to raise the minimum wage by at least 15% will put MORE PEOPLE out of work, as its increased operating costs will be passed on to consumer in higher pricers, and it will cut into hiring, and speed firing. Sure, the low-income workers affected will have a few more dollars in the beginning, but will lose MUCH MORE $$$ as prices for ALL GOODS & SERVICES rise dramatically in short order.             Dunno . . . history gets written by the winners, and right now, the GOP is on a downward spiral that they’re going to have a great deal of difficulty getting out of. Their only chance of survival will involve a fundamental reappraisal of their core values, strategy, tactics, and what constitutes their base. And to be realistic, I don’t think they can do it. They are totally target locked on Obama to the exclusion of all else, and that severely limits their range of options.

            To be blunt about it, they double down on the hate and crazy at every opportunity. At this point, they don’t care if their party survives, whether the economy is damaged, our defenses degraded, the nation wounded, and its people suffer as long as they oppose and obstruct Obama at every chance. They’re consumed by hate to the exclusion of literally everything else. And that includes their own long term survival.

            Iif the Republicans were to actually try to pass a jobs program rather than fixating on women’s lady parts, we might have a better recovery. But they know that an improved employment picture would reflect favorably on Obama, and therefore cannot act in the interests of the American people.

    People in states wth high unemployment – ask yourselves which party prevented jobs bills from being passed in the House since 2010? Don’t vote for that party in 2014. If your partner believes what that party says about women’s issues – don’t be their whores so they will think better of you and your way of thinking. People who feel your children need a better education – ask yourselves which party has deemed education to be an enemy to their party’s continued existence. Don’t vote for that party in 2014. People who believe that Freedom of Religion also means Freedom FROM Religion ( especially other people’s religions that they feel should be yours by LAW ) – don’t vote for those candidates in 2014.
