Obama was always going to out-raise the Republicans, but that he has surpassed their combined total–by a factor of two–is somewhat staggering:

Republicans, of course, have more corporate spending, especially on new groups where donations are unlimited and need not be disclosed, at their disposal. But if the president can raise this much now–with 98% coming from donations of $250 or less from over half a million people–from a supposedly depressed base, we can only imagine the staggering sums he might bring in if a Michele Bachmann or Rick Perry were to snag the Republican nomination and fire up progressive activists.
