Watch Out For Car Rental Companies’ Toll Service

Renting a car is a big part of travelling, whether for business or pleasure, and we’ve all become accustomed to the fees that get tacked on to the final bill over and above the actual cost of the rental – drop off charges, high gas prices if you don’t refill the gas tank, penalties for smoking or leaving the car too dirty, airport concession fees. If there’s a fee to be charged, a company will find a way.

Here’s another one – a convenience fee for using the rental company’s service to pay tolls. And you’d better read your rental contract’s fine print for this or you’ll find yourself paying dearly for it.

An article on Consumerist reports the experience of one user who was charged $24.75 for a $1.25 toll by Hertz when he used their Plate Pass service. He didn’t read the fine print and it cost him.
