Ted Cruz Is A Chip Off A Crazy Old Block

Ted Cruz Is A Chip Off A Crazy Old Block

Former U.S. Rep. Ron Paul’s recent foray into 9/11 trutherism has revived questions about how his fringe politics could affect his son’s presidential ambitions. But Rand Paul isn’t the only White House aspirant with a political anchor in the family.

During an August 21 meeting of the Western Williamson Republican Club, Pastor Rafael Cruz — father of Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) — attempted to explain that black Americans “need to be educated” about the real history of the civil rights movement, and that “the average black” doesn’t understand the minimum wage.

Cruz ran into trouble recounting a recent conversation that he had with a black pastor.

“I said, as a matter of fact, ‘Did you know that civil rights legislation was passed by Republicans? It was passed by a Republican Senate under the threat of a filibuster by the Democrats,’” Cruz told the group, as reported by BuzzFeed. “‘Oh, I didn’t know that.’ And then I said, ‘Did you know that every member of the Ku Klux Klan were Democrats from the South?’ ‘Oh I didn’t know that.’ You know, they need to be educated.”

“Jason Riley said in an interview, Did you know before we had minimum-wage laws black unemployment and white unemployment were the same?” he added, referring to the conservative Wall Street Journal editorial board member. “If we increase the minimum wage, black unemployment will skyrocket. See, he understands it, but the average black does not.”

Cruz’s assertions are riddled with factual inaccuracies. For starters, casting conservatives as the real heroes of the civil rights movement requires an absurd revisionist history (nevermind the fact that Republicans didn’t actually control the Senate in 1964).

Cruz is similarly off base on the effects of increasing the minimum wage. Both professional economists and recent history strongly dispute the notion that guaranteeing workers $10.10 per hour will cause unemployment to “skyrocket.” And, contrary to Cruz’s warning, “the average black” would actually disproportionately benefit from such an increase.

Additionally, Pastor Cruz’s riffing on the intelligence of “the average black” probably won’t help Republicans if they choose to revive their disastrously failed outreach to minorities before the 2016 presidential election. And that could be a problem for Senator Cruz.

Ted Cruz has made no apologies for his close personal and professional relationship with his father, who has been described as a “power broker” within the senator’s political organization. He has even used a Senate aide to book his father’s paid speeches, like the one given to the Western Williamson Republican Club. That means that, if Senator Cruz does pursue an oft-rumored presidential bid, he will have to answer for his father’s radical rhetoric. After all, not many serious presidential candidates have close advisors who believe that the California drought is the result of a United Nations plot to confiscate private property, or that the president is a secret Muslim who will force the elderly to undergo “suicide counseling,” or that evolution is a communist lie, among many other outrageous conspiracy theories. Cruz would have a difficult enough time convincing the electorate that he is mainstream enough to serve as president; his father’s regular outbursts will only make it harder.

Pastor Cruz believes that President Obama was “brainwashed for 18 years” by listening to the sermons of the Reverend Jeremiah Wright. What does that mean for Ted Cruz, who has been listening to his father for a lifetime?

This Week In Crazy: Obama Is Starting World War III, And The Rest Of The Worst Of The Right

Welcome to “This Week In Crazy,” The National Memo’s weekly update on the wildest attacks, conspiracy theories, and other loony behavior from the increasingly unhinged right wing. Starting with number five:

5. Ben Carson

Dr. Ben Carson is a world-renowned neurosurgeon, philanthropist, and Presidential Medal of Freedom winner. He is also a crazy person.

After becoming a right-wing hero for his controversial speech at a 2013 National Prayer Breakfast, Carson has expertly followed the Tea Party playbook: Say crazy things — for example, that gay people are like pedophiles and bestiality enthusiasts, or that Obamacare is pretty much slavery — and watch your book sales and speaking fees skyrocket.

So it was no surprise when Carson dropped this bomb on Breitbart TV on Monday:

“I mean, [we are] very much like Nazi Germany. And I know you’re not supposed to say ‘Nazi Germany,’ but I don’t care about political correctness,” Carson declared. “You know, you had a government using its tools to intimidate the population. We now live in a society where people are afraid to say what they actually believe. And it’s because of the PC police.”

“And,” he added, “that’s exactly what’s happening, creating a horrible schism that will destroy our nation.”

Just to be clear: President Obama and the PC police would have to brutally murder somewhere between 10 and 20 million more people to catch up with Hitler and the Gestapo.

Meanwhile, in unrelated news, the “Carson for President” movement is going strong — and his latest book is now available for Breitbart TV viewers to pre-order.

4. Greg Brannon

Dr. Greg Brannon, a Republican candidate for U.S. Senate in North Carolina, has already given Democrats a long list of reasons to pray that he captures the GOP nomination to face incumbent Democrat Kay Hagan in November. But he may have one-upped himself during a speech to Hand of Hope (a chain of crisis pregnancy centers), which was uncovered by Mother Jones this week:

)

“Well how far will [it] go? Last year, February 29, 2012, the Journal of Ethics in Australia, they debated that. They said we already know abortion is fine, why stop in the womb? Why not three months after? Why should we end the responsibility at that point?” Brannon asked the audience. “It could happen in America. Florida’s trying to do it right now and so is Georgia. Planned Parenthood. Because we allowed that slippery slope. Every human being deserves life, liberty, and property.”

That’s right: Planned Parenthood is trying to straight-up kill newborn babies in Florida and Georgia. I know Rick Scott is a RINO now, but that still seems a little extreme.

Of course, in reality, the evil plot exists only in Brannon’s mind. But as we’ve seen time and time again, there’s absolutely no limit to what the right will believe about Planned Parenthood.
3. Kyle Tasker

One year ago next week, the Republican National Committee released its post-2012 “autopsy report,” reminding Republicans (among other suggestions) to stop saying crazy things that terrify female voters.

Let’s see how that’s working out for them:

Kyle Tasker Post

That lovely image was posted to Facebook on Monday by Kyle Tasker, a Republican state representative from Nottingham, New Hampshire.

As Miscellany Bluereports, Tasker shared the image while defending fellow GOP Rep. Mark Warden, who was facing criticism for claiming that “a lot of people like being in abusive relationships.”

When Tasker was called out for his horrifically poor judgement in posting the image, the lawmaker deflected the criticism, replying, “Nah. I ran it by the [domestic violence] lobbyist… she laughed.”

If Carson’s PC police actually exist, then they desperately need to pay a visit to the Granite State.

2. Rafael Cruz

Pastor Rafael Cruz, father of U.S. senator and Statesman of the Year Ted Cruz, checks in at number two for revealing the horrible truth about the drought that has devastated California.

As it turns out, the drought has nothing to do with the weather (and certainly not climate change). According to Cruz, it is actually the result of a secret United Nations plot.

“There is more than one way to confiscate private property,” Cruz said during a speech in Longview, Texas last Saturday. “Have any of you heard of Agenda 21? Agenda 21 is all about confiscation of private property. It’s all about the worship of Mother Earth. You know, in California they are trying to tear down all the dams to let the rivers flow freely. They’ve created a drought in southern California to save a little fish, a little minnow.”

As The Raw Story helpfully explains, Cruz is referring to a state limit on agricultural water diversions, which was suspended by Governor Jerry Brown in January. In Cruz’s world, this amounts to tearing down all of the state’s dams as part of Agenda 21, a non-binding UN plan to encourage “sustainable human settlement development” (which many conservatives see as a manifestation of their craziest fears).

Normally, when the elder Cruz says something wacky — it happens rather frequently — Senator Cruz’s staff reminds the press that Pastor Cruz does not speak for his son (even though a Senate aide has booked Rafael Cruz’s events).

Considering that Ted Cruz believes that Agenda 21 is actually a George Soros/UN joint effort to destroy golf courses, however, in this case the father-son duo line up rather nicely.
1. Erik Rush

Erik Rush

This week’s “winner” is once again Erik Rush, who this week used his epically crazyWorldNetDaily column to expose President Obama’s diabolical plan “to touch off World War III.”

In case you couldn’t guess, we’re the Nazis this time.

“So, why would an American president – and a black American president at that – support an ascendant 21st-century Nazi regime, considering all of the attendant overtones of racism, fascism and genocide?” Rush writes, taking for granted the fact that the new Ukrainian government is pretty much the Fourth Reich. “The answer lies in the same place as that of why 20th-century Nazis would align themselves with the Japanese and Arab Muslims, or why the American political left would align itself with radical Muslims (who would kill off half of the left’s base if they happened to gain pre-eminence in America): common philosophies and common objectives.”

According to Rush, that common philosophy is Nazism, and the common objective is challenging Vladimir Putin. And that’s how Obama will finally fulfill his longtime goal of destroying the United States.

“Given the body of clandestine, dark machinations he has brought to bear, more than a few of us fear that his confrontation with Putin may be integral in bringing about a cataclysm beyond the conceptualization of most Americans, one which would result in America’s devastation,” Rush warns.

Of course, if Obama really starts World War III, the United States will need plenty of weapons, and fast. It’s just too bad that we’re getting rid of all of our guns so China will buy the Midwest from Valerie Jarrett.
