Teen Pops Head Out Of Bus, Hits NJ Overpass, Dies

FORT LEE, N.J. (AP) — A teenager headed to a Sweet 16 party was killed after he stuck his head out of the emergency hatch of a double-decker bus and hit the underside of a highway overpass, police said.

Daniel Fernandez, of Sayreville, N.J., was among 65 teens aboard the bus Friday night as it crossed the George Washington Bridge from New York City, said Port Authority of New York and New Jersey police. The 16-year-old was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The accident occurred at the Fletcher Avenue overpass of Interstate 95 at about 6:30 p.m.

Alex Franco, a security guard on the bus, told the Daily News that he had warned the teens to leave the hatch alone.

“I told them not to open the hatch, like three or four times, but kids, they don’t understand,” he said.

Franco said he went downstairs to tell the driver that it was getting too hot.

“It was very hot. Everybody was dancing. Two, five minutes I was downstairs,” he said. “Then I heard two guys screaming, ‘Oh, my God, oh, my God.’”

Designer Transportation, which operates the bus, expressed its “deepest heartfelt sympathy” for the boy’s family. It says it plans to conduct an internal investigation.

We don’t really have that much blood anyway, I think it is about on average 8 pints or thereabouts. Jesus isn’t going to get much washing done with that lot – besides, the whites will probably stain or come out pink at best after the final rinse.

I suggest you take your sins and any other smalls you need washing and do them like everyone else! In a washing machine with some non biological detergent rather than ask a complete stranger to donate his blood.

The very idea that believing in a fictional character who will ‘wash away your sins’ really is one ridiculous idea The story of jesus is a carbon copy of the story of Horus, which predates christianity by something around 10,000 years. If I was going to pray to a fictional character, I think i’d personally choose flash gordon as he is a lot more fun than that bearded flipflop character in the bible. Also the fact your choosing to bible bash on a thread about a tragic story like this one where a kid lost his life in front of many others, whom will be scarred for life after what they witnessed quite frankly is disgusting.

There are other gods but there is only one God- Jesus Christ. Ok, now that that is settled, it is also beside the point. This should be a warning to teenagers so more of them think twice before breaking a safety rule. Adults in many industries have blood rules. These are regulations updated due to the death, dismemberment, or horrible physical accident of a person not thinking straight. That’s why big companies put those stupid little statements on their products, such as, “coffee may be hot,” “keep away from children under 10,” and “do not microwave,” “product may contain shellfish, hazelnuts, and dairy.” For reasons such as common sense, a place that takes in lost dogs and/or cats disallows a person with pet dander allergens from working there.

‘”God” is many peoples answer to many things. I am catholique but do not believe that God had anything to do with this.

His family, whatever religion (or not) they follow, will seek comfort there. Their clergy will try to help them understand what has happened and how to cope. I have lost a grandchild (4 1/2) and know how helpful clergy can be. However the child is gone. He helped us.

I don’t condemn your (or anyone else’s) right to your religious views (or lack thereof) however, the fact that you found it so important to make a statement that you “hope[d] he had Jesus in his heart . . . to forgive [him and] you [his and] your sins and . . . save [him and] you from hellfire!” rather than to hope/pray for this quietly inside yourself seems a bit heartless. You may be very well-meaning, but if any of his loved-ones read that, it could be hurtful. Not because someone’s religious views may be seen by others as potentially offensive, but because the words any loved-ones would want and need to hear right now would be focused on his tragic death and the loss that will be felt because of it. I’m sure they don’t need to hear right now that he runs the risk of “hellfire” if he hadn’t asked forgiveness for any possible sins he *may* have commited.
