Anyhooo…
What I was responding to was a post you made about Obama enacting tighter gun laws. No such thing has occured. I just wanted to point out that the last “real” legislation passed- The Brady Bill- was put forth by the Reagan administration. I just tire of such paranoid rants from those who own guns- always worried that they may get their precious arms take away. And media doesn’t propose to have people’s guns taken away. Owning fire arms isn’t a left, right or center issue. It’s a personal one. I know people on all sides of the political spectrum who do own weapons and those who choose not to own weapons. I just happen to be a person who chooses not to own a gun. And unlike the NRA fanatics and maniacs, the fact that I don’t want to be armed doesn’t mean I care less for my family or am, somehow, less intellegent or less a patriot. I don’t belong to a militia, I’ve never served in the military and I don’t like violence. That doesn’t mean I want to take anyone’s weapons away. I take very seriously the fact that once a bullet leaves it’s chamber, there is no calling it back.

I can’t live in fear of everything and everyone. Owning a gun doesn’t make you safer. In cases of domestic violence, you’re many times more likely to be injured or killed if a gun is in the home. Your child is more likely to be injured or killed by the gun that is kept for “protection.” In the area of the country with the highest gun ownership- the south- the murder rate is also higher than any other region of this nation. Our country is one of the world leaders in gun-related deaths.

You keep your guns. I’d never try to take them from you. I’ll take my chances.

I’m not exactly sure where your “gun rant” came from in response to my post of that letter. If you dont like guns, dont have one. Stick to your guns! LOL

Regarding your “statistic” about gun owners being 4.5x more likely to be shot… I can tell you this… nearly 100% of ALL non-gun owners that are threatened by a gun holder lose their battle. And what you NEVER hear in the media are the literally millions of incidents each year where a lawful gun owner defends themselves successfully against another person who intends to harm them. That doesn’t make for good news in the leftist media, however. Here are some of the facts:

* Guns are used 2.5 million times a year in self-defense. Law-abiding citizens use guns to defend themselves against criminals as many as 2.5 million times every year — or about 6,850 times a day. This means that each year, firearms are used more than 80 times more often to protect the lives of honest citizens than to take lives.
* Of the 2.5 million times citizens use their guns to defend themselves every year, the overwhelming majority merely brandish their gun or fire a warning shot to scare off their attackers. Less than 8% of the time, a citizen will kill or wound his/her attacker.
* As many as 200,000 women use a gun every year to defend themselves against sexual abuse.
* Even anti-gun Clinton researchers concede that guns are used 1.5 million times annually for self-defense. According to the Clinton Justice Department, there are as many as 1.5 million cases of self-defense every year. The National Institute of Justice published this figure in 1997 as part of “Guns in America” — a study which was authored by noted anti-gun criminologists Philip Cook and Jens Ludwig.
* Armed citizens kill more crooks than do the police. Citizens shoot and kill at least twice as many criminals as police do every year (1,527 to 606). And readers of Newsweek learned that “only 2 percent of civilian shootings involved an innocent person mistakenly identified as a criminal. The ‘error rate’ for the police, however, was 11 percent, more than five times as high.”
* Handguns are the weapon of choice for self-defense. Citizens use handguns to protect themselves over 1.9 million times a year. Many of these self-defense handguns could be labeled as “Saturday Night Specials.”

Like I said, Joy, if you dont want to own a gun, dont own a gun. Stick to your guns on this principle!

Since the Democrat Party with its stance leaning towards controlling the ownership of certain firearms attributed to state and national election losses in 2000, 2004, and 2006, the question of gun control has been totally removed form that party’s platform.

When was the last gun control utterance been heard from a Democrat at any level since 2008? In fact, Obama was instrumental in three significant ruling regarding the ownership and use of guns. One ruling signed by Obama was the right to carry a loaded gun while in the confines of a national park. Two other rulings which were ramrodded by him include the rights of District of Columbia and city of Chicago citizens to own firearms for their own protection.

The NRA in particular has avoided these instances of fact for the simple reason that for them the loss of any such gun ownership causes means a smaller pond upon which for them to float their boats. St Pierre (not sure of the spelling) NRA president has always been a thick head when trying to protect the extent of his influence and importance. Personal interactions with him has left this writer with the impression that there are certain rusted firearms with more brains than he is in possession of.
