The True Cost Of George W. Bush's Magical Thinking

The mystery has always been why any Democrat would have wanted to follow the catastrophic presidency of George W. Bush. To understand why, it’s necessary to revisit ancient history, specifically 2001. Given today’s TV- and Internet-shortened time horizon, that’s almost like invoking the Napoleonic Wars, but bear with me.

Thanks partly to his skill at “triangulation” — seeking middle ground between left and right — President Clinton left a legacy of prosperity and balanced budgets. Republicans impeached him anyway.

    Had true Democracy prevailed and Al Gore been given the true electorate in 2000 instead of a corrupt judicial system giving Bush the election, I believe this crisis would never have happened. I believe that Al Gore would have continued with the Clinton policies and the budget would now be balanced. There would have been no tax cuts for the wealthiest among us, nor would there have been wars in Iraq or Afganistan, and nor would there have been irregular bookkeeping tricks to keep some items off the budget…….nor would the Supreme Court have ruled for Corporations to be considered as individuals with their election contributions……..
