(Reuters) – President-elect Donald Trump on Saturday defended his decision to settle lawsuits over his Trump University real estate seminars for $25 million, saying he does not have time to fight the fraud cases in court now that he is headed to the White House.

The lawsuits cast a shadow over the Republican’s presidential campaign and led to one of the more controversial moments of his run for the White House when he claimed the judge overseeing two of the cases was biased because he was of Mexican ancestry.

While denying any wrongdoing, Trump agreed on Friday to pay $25 million to settle the lawsuits.

“I settled the Trump University lawsuit for a small fraction of the potential award because as President I have to focus on our country,” Trump wrote on Twitter on Saturday morning.

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has said over 5,000 students across the country were defrauded out of about $40 million, so Trump’s settlement of $25 million was around 60 percent of these estimated damages.

“The ONLY bad thing about winning the Presidency is that I did not have the time to go through a long but winning trial on Trump U. Too bad!” He said in a second tweet.

In announcing the settlement, Schneiderman said the deal followed repeated refusals by Trump “to settle for even modest amounts of compensation for the victims of his phony university.”

In a statement, Schneiderman called the settlement a “stunning reversal by Donald Trump and a major victory for the over 6,000 victims of his fraudulent university.”

Students had claimed they were they were lured by false promises into paying up to $35,000 to learn Trump’s real estate investing secrets from his hand-picked instructors. Trump’s lawyers denied this.

The deal covers three lawsuits relating to Trump University: two class actions suits in California and a New York case brought by Schneiderman. U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel in San Diego must still approved the settlement.

During his election campaign, Trump said that Curiel, who was born in Indiana to Mexican immigrant parents, could not be impartial because of Trump’s campaign pledge to build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border to control illegal immigration.

26 Responses to Trump Complains About Trump University Settlement On Twitter

  1. He denies wrong-doing because the students didn’t read the small print, nor should they have taken Trump literally about the lie he told to prospective students applying to attend a bogus university—if one can call Trump’s bait a university.
So, since he’s too busy preparing for what was gift-wrapped for him, he’ll settle. Will the university be razed to the ground? Better yet—there should be a sign showing the name of the scheme—“Fraudulent University—No Guarantees”.

  2. Trump broke Ferengi Rule of Acquisition #1—“Once you have their money, never give it back”.
Then there is Rule #13 —“Anything worth doing is worth doing for money.”
    And Rule #10—:Greed is eternal”.

The students failed to take note of Rule #8 —“Small print leads to large risk.” But they’re lucky that Trump was forced to break Rule #1.

  3. Irony:

Conway on Anderson Cooper 360: “Bill Clinton settled his lawsuit against the woman accusing him, so he’s obviously guilty”

F**kstick Von Clownface on his settlement: “Obviously I’m not guilty”.

    LOL

  4. Even for a conservative, this guy is a weenie. Mitt Romney looks like a statesman and John McCain looks stable in comparison.

WHAT??? say it ain’t so Donnie. You never settle or concede defeat. LOL. Trump must have been planning to defend himself, if so settling was a very wise move. He just figures that he and his family will make so much money now by leveraging his political position that 25 mil will be chump change.

    • His kids can make it up in no time with all the insider information they will get from attending meeting with Daddy. And they thought that Hillary made money from being in government. Trumps next book will be “The Selling Out of America.” or “Making America Great for Me.”

    • No, those who voted for this corrupt individual should be ashamed of themselves, given that he showed everyone exactly who his was. It’ll take generations to recover from this.

  8. If he runs the country like he runs his business just imagine how many countries we can get to give us things we will refuse to pay for and how many we can swindle by selling worthless products. Trump can make America rich again if he doesn’t bankrupt it.

  9. This man stated on the campaign trail he would never settle this case but would instead fight it in court and win. Just one more Trump lie. If he said it was daylight out I would go to the window to check. Enjoy the ride you Trumpsters.
