Watchdogs To IRS: Reject Rove Group’s Tax Application

Watchdogs To IRS: Reject Rove Group’s Tax Application

by Justin Elliott, ProPublica.

Two watchdog groups are calling on the IRS to reject Crossroads GPS’ request to be recognized as a social welfare nonprofit.

Democracy 21 and the Campaign Legal Center, nonpartisan outfits that favor tighter campaign finance regulations, wrote a letter to the tax agency Wednesday citing ProPublica’s recent reporting on Crossroads’ 2010 IRS application. The application said that the group’s activities seeking to influence elections would be “limited in amount, and will not constitute the organization’s primary purpose.”

In the letter, Democracy 21 and the Campaign Legal Center called those statements by Crossroads GPS “simply not credible, in light of the actual practices of the organization and the tens of millions of dollars Crossroads GPS spent on campaign ads since then.”

Conceived by Karl Rove, Crossroads GPS was one of the biggest outside spenders in the 2012 elections, reporting more than $70 million in expenditures to the Federal Election Commission.

Recognition as a social welfare nonprofit is important for Crossroads because it allows the group to shield the identity of its donors. Under tax rules, such groups are allowed to spend money on political campaigns but must be primarily engaged in promoting social welfare.

Campaign Legal Center Executive Director Gerald Hebert said in a statement accompanying Wednesday’s letter, “The application filed with the IRS by Crossroads GPS is laughable in the face of the growing body of evidence against the pretense that Crossroads GPS is a ‘social welfare’ organization.”

Crossroads GPS spokesman Jonathan Collegio responded: “This sounds like the 25th identical letter that the partisans and ideologues at the Campaign Legal Center have sent to the IRS, and it doesn’t merit anyone’s attention.”

We’ve inquired with the IRS as to whether Crossroads GPS has been recognized as a social welfare nonprofit — as of mid-December it had not — and we will update this post if we hear back.

  1. I guess when you’re as homely as he is you need something to keep you going so he chases money.

    Another rove perjury party.

  3. Lynda says:

This at first glance seems a no brainer, but we are talking deep politics here and worst yet…MONEY! I’ll be surprised in anything is done to change the status of his evil empire.

  4. sunmusing says:

This is but one of many that needs to be looked at by the IRS and DoJ….

  5. Another twist in turning what is meant for good into evil. Sounds like the devil is at work.

  6. Sierra111 says:

I saw a picture of him praying while in the White House when Bush was president. No wrong makes a right, Mr. Rove.

  7. Minell says:

Is he trying to get help from the government that he hates. No free rides Karl.

  8. William says:

See what happens to you if you lie to the IRS, Karl Rove belongs in jail. Then and only then will anything change.

  9. This is a man who should be scorned by all. He has taken the “Constitution into a bathroom stall not to read it. Coming out empty handed he makes no excuse for his insane ways. He is caught up in his ego. A small and wimpy man who’s wife couldn’t even put up with him any more, gets all giddy inside by ripping We The People Off and having politicians and big money kissing his butt. Plus all that he makes and all that he can steal with it all being perfectly legal in his eyes. (yah right) I wonder what that protection costs him? A Supreme Court can’t be cheap. Do you realize that if this was a Democratic lead SJC these guys and gals would be screaming impeach. Thank God the Democrats have more class. Sometimes though I wish they got far more nasty than they are. Someone has to put these asses on the potty.

  10. Karl Rove could be Ben Franklin’s alter ego. The black side of the good Ben we know from history. This guy needs a kite hooked up with metal wire to a Nuke Power Plant.

  11. jstsyn says:

Who can stand this leper? The guy is disgusting.

  12. he will find some how to skirt the law again. He company is not social welfare nonprofit but he will find a way to get around that not to disclose who is the donors.

  13. howa4x says:

Well if they get enough courage to go after crossroads then maybe they can go after all that money that is housed offshore to avoid taxes, probably by the same people who fund it

  14. Brian says:

Rove looks like the unattractive, weak-eyed, unathletic, weenie who was picked on in school. Apparently, he never got over it and wants his revenge on America. He needs, quite simply, to get over it.

  15. Karl Rove’s group Social Welfare, more like a social disease. His group should never be recognized as a social welfare group!!!!!! EVER!!!!!!!
