Leonard Pitts Jr. examines the latest U.S. Marine Corps controversy in his column, “Marines’ Ignorance Should Alarm Us All:”
There are only two possible explanations for that photo.
These young Marines are among the elite of our fighting forces. They understand full well that the SS (some units at least) were considered the elite of the German Army. However, they obviously did not think upon the choice of an SS flag and what kind of message they were providing. I feel sorry for these young men and their terrible choice. The fault lies with the higher ups. The officers certainly knew better, or certainly should have. Leadership has a cost as well as a result and in this case it failed.
