As President, Trump Is Doing The Exact Opposite Of What He Promised On The Campaign Trail

When Donald Trump campaigned for president, he told the American people he would stand up for the working class and take on the political and economic establishment. One year since his election, he has repeatedly reneged on his promises by supporting the interests of the wealthy and powerful at the expense of working families.

During his campaign, candidate Trump said he was going to “drain the swamp.” Now that he is president, Trump has brought more billionaires into his administration than any president before him.

While campaigning, Trump told the American people he was going to provide health “insurance for everybody.” As president, he supported a disastrous bill that would have thrown millions off of health insurance, substantially raised premiums for older workers and defunded Planned Parenthood.

As a candidate, Trump said he understood the pain of working families. His budget would slash funding for affordable housing, college financial aid and Head Start.

And while Trump wants to make devastating cuts to programs working families desperately need, he is working overtime to provide a massive tax break to billionaires like himself.

During the campaign, Trump promised to invest $1 trillion in our nation’s infrastructure to create millions of jobs. Instead, Trump’s budget would cut funding to repair our roads, bridges, railways and water facilities.

As a candidate, Trump promised he would not cut Medicare or Medicaid. Now he supports a budget that calls for $473 billion in cuts to Medicare and more than $1 trillion in cuts to Medicaid.

On the campaign trail, Trump said he would stop the pharmaceutical industry from “getting away with murder.” Trump’s pick to head the Food and Drug Administration received millions of dollars from pharmaceutical corporations and is strongly opposed to lowering drug prices.

During the election, Trump promised to “stop Wall Street from getting away with murder.” As president, Trump signed an executive order to deregulate the same financial institutions whose illegal behavior caused millions of Americans to lose their homes, jobs and life savings.

In other words, Trump as a candidate promised the American people one thing; as president, he is doing the exact opposite.

Simply stopping Trump’s agenda is not enough. We can join every other major country and guarantee health care to all as a right. We can demand that the wealthiest people in this country and the largest corporations start paying their fair share of taxes. We can create millions of decent paying jobs by rebuilding our nation’s infrastructure. We can reform our broken criminal justice system and pass comprehensive immigration reform. We can raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour and make public colleges and universities tuition-free.

Together we need to build a government and an economy that works for all of us, not just the 1%.

Bernie Sanders was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2006 after serving 16 years in the House of Representatives. He is the longest serving independent member of Congress in American history.

The determination of desperate Republicans to pass a major Bill to save their hides in 2018 requires budget cuts in programs essential to the well being, and survival, of elderly Americans and the poor. Their tax “reform” proposal, which is nothing more than welfare for corporate America and the rich, requires drastic cuts in social programs to limit the budget deficits and increases in the national debt ($1.7T) that it will produce. MEDICARE and MEDICAID reductions in services will produce a backlash from seniors the likes of which neither Trump nor the Republicans in Congress have ever seen. If Social Security is also affected to offset the losses in revenue that these irresponsible tax reductions will produce, it is going to be lights out for the GOP for at least a generation.

You can count on the GOP to slash their own throats, and given the added pressure of malfeasance due to charges being leveled against Ray Moore in Alabama, the writing is on the wall.

One of the most egregious turnarounds in Trump’s purported agenda is his U-turn on trade with China. A little advertised reason for his ongoing visit to China involved signing a trade agreement that include 19 different deals which. according to estimates, will increase the trade deficit from $347B to $370B. Not to worry though, in addition to great chemistry, the Chinese promised to buy lots of pork from Smithfield, in Montana, a company owned by a Chinese corporation!!! This whole thing would be comical if it wasn’t so ominous and callous.

Well, as Teflon Donnie has officially lied on all of his campaign promises (amazing how he cannot remember what he said, and said any images showing him saying it were obviously cut and paste), he has shown to the rest of the country what we in the northeast have known about him since the 70s.

The very nature and spirit of partisan politics is to unilaterally promise things. The more showy and flamboyant the promise and the body language used, the greater the chance of being elected.
During the campaign, candidates of all parties are expected as de rigueur to pronounce what they would do, as though we have an autocracy. Later on, they shift gears once the contentious process of bickering between parties sets in, rigid alliances kick in and are marshaled to stifle progress because either side’s combatants dare not capitulate, or else they will be perceived as weak by partisans in the electorate.

With Trump, we have an odd case of a blowhard who needs to always see his name in lights promising wildly absurd things, and then being confronted with the cold reality of the mechanism of partisan politics.

But that doesn’t bother Trump, because his name is already in lights and his ego is greatly appeased. As long as he has the opportunity to pretend he’s great his personal goals are met—goals which take priority over the need to be altruistic, humble, and compassionate.

Those are pesky “politically correct” Christian attributes, and God forbid we should allow ourselves to behave as Jesus, Muhammad, Baha’u’llah, and all the other Messengers, would want us to behave !!
