Top Democrats Urge Justice Dept Inspector General To Probe Barr

Two top Democrats are urging the Justice Department's internal watchdogs to investigate slanderous remarks made by Attorney General William Barr about the intelligence community official who elevated the whistleblower complaint regarding Donald Trump.

Appearing on Fox News on April 9, Barr said Trump had done "the right thing" when he fired former intelligence investigator general Michael Atkinson, suggesting that Atkinson had exceeded his mandate as IG by exploring "anything" and then reporting it back to Congress. But in a letter to two Justice Department officials, the Democratic chairs of the House Intelligence and Judiciary Committees said Barr had "blatantly mischaracterized" Atkinson's conduct.

Nadler Says Impeachment Could Begin ‘In Late Fall’

Congress could begin the formal proceeding to impeach Trump in a matter of months, House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler told MSNBC on Monday.

“If we decide to report articles of impeachment, we could get to that late in the fall, in the latter part of the year,” Nadler told the network.

The committee is currently petitioning in federal court to get access to grand jury testimony collected during the Mueller investigation.

Nadler is also preparing to sue Don McGahn, the former White House counsel, to compel him to testify on Trump’s possible abuses of power. Trump ordered McGahn to defy a congressional subpoena for him to appear in front of the committee.

The Mueller Report explained that Trump ordered McGahn to fire Mueller to end the investigation. McGahn refused to do so, and then Trump asked him to falsify records to claim that Trump never made the demand. That is just one example among many of Trump’s attempts to obstruct justice.

A majority of Democrats in the House — 118 — have now gone on record with their desire to start an impeachment inquiry of Trump.

That number has grown from 50 members at the end of May, with many of them joining the list following Robert Mueller’s testimony to Congress in July.

Impeachment support has also continued to grow in public polls as more Americans have become aware of Trump’s actions.

House Judiciary Committee Chair Jerry Nadler of New York came out in favor of impeaching President Donald Trump on Sunday, though his comments left many questions open about what exactly his position is.

CNN’s Jake Tapper elicited the perplexing answers from Nadler on CNN’s State of the Union.

“Do you personally support impeaching President Trump?” Tapper asked.

“My personal view is that he richly deserves impeachment. He has done many impeachable offenses. He’s violated the law six ways from Sunday,” Nadler said.

But then the New York Democrat, who leads the committee that would be first to bring forward articles of impeachment, explained why his view doesn’t entail that the House should immediately move forward with the process.

“The question is: Can we develop enough evidence to put before the American people?” he said. “We’ve broken the logjam. You know, the president and the attorney general were lying to the American people consistently, saying that the Mueller report found no obstruction, no collusion, and exonerated the president. I think the hearing the other day was an inflection point because it showed quite clearly that the report did not exonerate the president.”

But it’s not exactly clear why, if Nadler is so convinced that Trump is guilty of crimes and a cover-up, that the American people should need more “evidence.” The Mueller report is substantial evidence of the president’s guilt, and it hasn’t been credibly challenged. Of course, in an actual impeachment proceeding, the Senate would conduct a trial to assess the president’s guilt and weigh the evidence in question, and the president would presumably present a defense. The House of Representatives is currently trying to get the underlying evidence and grand jury material for the report, but it’s unlikely to present any new information — and it may not even be released publicly if the Judiciary Committee obtains it at this point.

Multiple reports have indicated that Nadler has become convinced that impeachment is the correct route for the House to take, but House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is holding him back.
