#EndorseThis: Conan Unleashes Nuclear Punch Line On President Trump

#EndorseThis: Conan Unleashes Nuclear Punch Line On President Trump

First things first, our sincere apologies for yesterday’s missing version of #EndorseThis. Not that an alibi is needed with such loyal readership, but stormy travel skies, flawed WiFi at 20,000 feet, and a dead laptop combined to put your humble narrator out of commission for most of a day.

Now that we’re back to it, how about a fresh start? “ET” has perhaps been alienated (see what we did there?) with some many serious themes lately. This column is at-heart a late-night comedy review. No need for too many “very special episodes!”

Conan O’Brien fits in our new theme perfectly, leading off a Wednesday night monologue with several vicious punch lines about President Trump in the first 60 seconds.

But wait for the Trump-Roseanne joke with a subtle John McCain reference. It might be just a little too soon, but you can’t say it doesn’t feel right.

Conan. Destroyer of audience.

#EndorseThis: Jimmy Kimmel Sticks It To Roseanne For Getting Kicked Off TV

#EndorseThis: Jimmy Kimmel Sticks It To Roseanne For Getting Kicked Off TV

By now, you’ve probably gotten the play-by-play. Roseanne Barr’s edgy Twitter feed finally went over the top yesterday as the aging sitcom actress tweeted racially-charged insults at former Obama staffer Valerie Jarrett. Retribution is swift in the 21st century. Within a day, the popular show Roseanne has been cancelled by ABC, and its former star has been forced to apologize.

In today’s clip, Jimmy Kimmel addresses the Roseanne controversy in a surprisingly soft-spoken way. The comic says his peace about the actress’ idiotic and insensitive tweet and moves on quickly, but not without unloading a choice haymaker. We won’t dare spoil the fun. But if you’ve got a brain, you’ll want to hear Jimmy’s zinger at :33.

Kimmel follows-up with a parody of what Roseanne would look like with only John Goodman starring by his lonesome. The footage feels a little empty but the branding is great. If you ask National Memo, it beats the hell out of King Ralph.

#EndorseThis: Jordan Klepper’s Trump TV Is As Terrifying As A Roseanne Tweet

#EndorseThis: Jordan Klepper’s Trump TV Is As Terrifying As A Roseanne Tweet

Jordan Klepper’s style is a little different from most comics featured by #EndorseThis. With his premise as a self-satirizing right-wing Trumpist, the jokes come fast and loose, and often at the expense of a clear narrative.

But Klepper can chalk up this sketch as one of the cleverest bits of comedy from the Trump era. Examining 45’s dark new influence over TV sitcoms, Jordan begins with a shot across the bow at Roseanne Barr, a macadamia nut farmer (and Twitter wingnut) who pretends to be an average blue-collar citizen on ABC.

It gets better. Jordan’s companions Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp propose a reboot of classic American shows in the image of right wing voters. Seinfeld? Elaine turns into a mousy church wife. George Jefferson? Movin’ on down. Buffy gets rebuffed by a toxic male boss. And what about The Cosby Show? Why, it’s fine the way it is…especially the leading actor.
