Trump Defends Removal Of Univision Anchor From News Conference

WASHINGTON (Reuters) — Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on Wednesday defended his decision to toss a news anchor with the Spanish-language Univision network out of a press conference, in his latest tussle with a U.S. television personality.

“I’m not a bully,” Trump told NBC in an interview.

On Tuesday, Univision’s Jorge Ramos was removed from Trump’s news conference in Dubuque, Iowa, after the business mogul-turned-candidate said the journalist was asking a question out of turn.

“He was totally out of line last night,” Trump said of Ramos, speaking on NBC’s “Today” program.

Ramos, who has been critical of Trump’s stance on immigration, said he was waiting for his turn to ask a question on the subject when Trump ordered him out.

“He didn’t like my question and when he didn’t like my question then he motioned so the one security guard would come where I was and then threw me out of the press conference,” Ramos told ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

The dust-up is the latest involving a television anchor and the outspoken Trump, who also has faced criticism for his war-of-words with Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly following that network’s recent Republican presidential debate.

Trump is locked in a legal battle with Univision over the network’s recent decision to cancel its contract to broadcast the Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants, co-owned by Trump, after he made controversial remarks about Latino immigrants.

Ramos has been equally vocal about Trump’s stance on immigration, telling CNN earlier this month that it was “not only disgraceful but dangerous” and fueling some criticism about his work as an objective journalist.

“He has to explain how he wants to deport 11 million people,” Ramos told ABC on Wednesday. “As journalists, we are not only required but we are forced to take a stand and clearly when Mr. Trump is talking about immigration in an extreme way, we have to confront him.”

Trump has called for building a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, deporting illegal immigrants and ending birthright citizenship.

(Reuters) — Jorge Ramos, an anchor with the Spanish-language Univision network, was removed from Donald Trump’s news conference in Dubuque, Iowa, on Tuesday after the Republican presidential candidate said the journalist was asking a question out of turn.

Ramos, who later returned to the televised event, was trying to query Trump when the real estate mogul told him several times to sit down.

After Ramos said he had the right to ask a question, Trump said: “No, you don’t. You haven’t been called. Go back to Univision.”

As Ramos kept trying to question Trump, the candidate called on another reporter. A security official then removed Ramos from the room.

Asked later at the news conference about the incident, Trump said: “I don’t know really much about him. I don’t believe I’ve ever met him except he started screaming and I didn’t escort him out. You’ll have to talk to security.”Saying he did not mind if Ramos came back, Trump said: “Certainly he was not chosen… he just stands up and starts screaming, so maybe he’s at fault also.”

He added of Ramos: “He’s obviously a very emotional person.”

After coming back to the news conference, Ramos, who has been critical of Trump’s position on illegal immigration, got the chance to press Trump on the immigration issue.

Trump, the front-runner for the 2016 Republican nomination, has made immigration a central plank of his campaign, saying he would deport all undocumented immigrants and rescind President Barack Obama’s executive orders on immigration.

The billionaire businessman began his campaign in June by saying Mexico was sending its criminals and rapists to the United States. The comment angered Hispanic civil rights groups and others.

In a statement afterward, Univision News President Isaac Lee said Ramos had previously requested interviews with Trump.

“We’d love for Mr. Trump to sit down for an in-depth interview with Jorge to talk about the specifics of his proposals,” the statement said.

NBC Fires Donald Trump After Immigrant-Bashing Campaign Comments

NBC Fires Donald Trump After Immigrant-Bashing Campaign Comments

Give credit to Donald Trump: He’s now managed one of the biggest TV flameouts in a long time.

NBC announced Monday that it is severing its ties with the outlandish businessman and Republican presidential candidate, in the wake of his comments about immigrants being rapists and other sorts of criminals.

“At NBC, respect and dignity for all people are cornerstones of our values,” NBC announced in a statement. “Due to the recent derogatory statements by Donald Trump regarding immigrants, NBCUniversal is ending its business relationship with Mr. Trump.”

NBC will no longer carry the Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants, which are owned and run by Trump. In addition, NBC made clear that The Donald will not be returning to The Apprentice, which he launched with NBC — though the spinoff Celebrity Apprentice will itself be continuing without him. Trump had left the latter show in order to run for president — and now he won’t be coming back.

Trump’s comments, especially about Mexican immigrants, had led to a fierce backlash that resulted in the Spanish-language channel Univision deciding to drop the Miss Universe pageant. In response, Trump has said he plans to sue Univision “for a tremendous amount of money.”

At his campaign announcement about two weeks ago, a barely coherent Trump told his supporters:

The U.S. has become a dumping ground for everybody else’s problems. Thank you. It’s true, and these are the best and the finest. When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.
