Kellyanne Conway threw a tantrum of her own when asked to explain Trump’s latest Twitter tirades. And she wound up making a devastating point against her boss.

Trump posted a series of panicky tweets Saturday morning, fretting about the prospect of his personal attorney “flipping” on him. On CNN’s “State of the Union” Sunday morning, host Dana Bash asked Conway to explain the tweets.

When Conway was unable to do so, Bash asked, “If the president’s going to tweet something like that, shouldn’t he own it and explain it?”

“He owns it,” Conway insisted. “He owns everything.”

Bash continued to press her on the issue, and Conway quickly lost it, lashing out in response.

“I’m sure CNN will talk about it for the next week,” she sneered. “I’m sure there will be graphics and chyrons and everything else.”

And she only grew more petulant as she went on. “Dana, if the president didn’t tweet, what would CNN talk about?” Conway asked. “I’m very … I’m curious.”

“You know what? We would talk a lot more about the issues that he’s not diverting from,” Bash replied.

Trump’s latest round of attacks and nonsense are made all the more glaring by the circumstances. They came just as Melania Trump joined former presidents and first families at the funeral of former First Lady Barbara Bush. Trump watched the event on television, then continued his Twitter rants.

Even a mass shooting in Tennessee overnight could not intrude into Trump’s Twitter time.

But even if Trump stopped tweeting long enough to test Conway’s hypothetical, the results would be no better for him. Currently, that would mean discussing his bumbling attempt at diplomacy with North Korea.

Trump has proven time and again that he doesn’t need Twitter to have a meltdown. But Conway’s unwillingness to address his social media behavior speaks just as loudly as his ranting tweets.

The day after being named the worst president of all time, Trump is lashing out on Twitter, including attacks on the man named our greatest living president.

Presidents Day was not kind to Trump. Survivors of the Parkland, Florida, mass shooting continued to shame him, and Trump shamed himself by golfing just miles away from where one of the teenagers slain in the tragedy was being put to rest.

But worse than that for Trump’s fragile ego was the fact that a national organization of political scientists announced that Trump had been ranked the worst president of all time in their survey of experts, which included Republicans.

On Tuesday morning, Trump responded with a Twitter meltdown in which he took repeated shotsat President Obama, who was ranked first among living presidents, and lied his way through a raft of issues that are getting under his skin.

Amid the flurry of tweets, Trump wrote, “Republicans are now leading the Generic Poll, perhaps because of the popular Tax Cuts which the Dems want to take away. Actually, they want to raise you taxes, substantially. Also, they want to do nothing on DACA, R’s want to fix!”

It was Trump who rescinded DACA, and repeatedly scuttled deals to fix it. Democrats are substantially leading Republicans in generic ballot polls, and Trump’s tax scam is not, in fact, popular.

Trump also lashed out at the Pennsylvania Supreme Court for correcting the hopelessly gerrymandered congressional map.

“Hope Republicans in the Great State of Pennsylvania challenge the new ‘pushed’ Congressional Map, all the way to the Supreme Court, if necessary,” he tweeted. “Your Original was correct! Don’t let the Dems take elections away from you so that they can raise taxes & waste money!”

That new map figures to level the playing field in Pennsylvania, and result in several pickups for Democrats in November, and the U.S. Supreme Court has already rejected a challenge to the state court’s ruling on the matter.

Trump appears to be anxious about the prospect of a blue wave in November, and the Russia investigation. He also fired off a number of tweets about Russian interference, including the ridiculous claim that “I have been much tougher on Russia than Obama, just look at the facts. Total Fake News!”

In fact, Trump has refused to impose the latest round of congressional sanctions against Russia, while President Obama’s tough response to Russian interference caused Trump to praise Putin right after his then-transition adviser Michael Flynn spoke to the Russians about sanctions.

Trump’s Twitter meltdown is scattershot at a glance, but his twin anxieties about Russia and the midterms are well founded. If Democrats take back the House, Republicans will no longer be able to shield him from impeachment.

Donald Trump, who has never shied away from defying American norms for the sake of his own ego, is planning to put on a spectacle that would typically be more at home in China or North Korea: a military parade.

According to the Washington Post, the Pentagon is, at the behest of Trump, is planning a massive demonstration of U.S. military power on our own streets.

One White House official says the plan “highlights the service and sacrifice of the military and have a unifying moment for the country.” As the Post notes, though, Trump’s real motivation may be envy at the display put on by French President Emmanuel Macron on Bastille Day, which led him to demand a Fourth of July parade last year.

Trump would be the first president to put on a military parade since George H. W. Bush and the Constitution Avenue parade to celebrate the end of the Persian Gulf War.

The reported plans have drawn anger from groups like VoteVets. “Trump just declared those who did not applaud him at the State of the Union ‘treasonous’ and ‘un-American.’ Now he wants the military to parade for him. This is not normal. This is not OK,” the group declared.

The egomania and authoritarian undertones are bad enough, but what makes this idea particularly galling is how poorly Trump has treated the service members he commands.

Trump has spent months insulting prisoners of warattacking two separate Gold Star families, taking a disabled war hero’s Purple Heart, threatening to kick out troops based on gender identity or immigration status, and proposing to dissolve a program for homeless veterans.

And he has used the troops as a political football, feigning offense on their behalf to attack NFL playerskneeling in protest of police brutality.

It does not help matters that Trump never served when he had the chance, something that freshman senator and double amputee Army Lt. Col. Tammy Duckworth vividly reminded “Cadet Bone Spurs” of when she called out his hollow rhetoric.

The military is not a toy for Trump’s personal gratification. It is a powerful force of brave men and women serving all of us, to whom he has a solemn responsibility.

Forcing the Pentagon to throw him an ego-stoking parade, after his endless crass attacks on the troops, is a perversion of that responsibility and a flagrant violation of basic decency.
