Trump’s Hotel Bans Press For Inauguration, Raising First Amendment Concerns

President-elect Donald Trump’s Washington, D.C. hotel is banning reporters from its premises during inauguration week, according to Politico’s Daniel Lippman. The move underscores the incoming president’s personal hostility toward the press and raises First Amendment issues, as the hotel space is leased by the president-elect from the federal government.

Throughout the 2016 campaign and into the transition, Trump has made his hostility to the press a centerpiece of his political strategy. Trump declared war on the press, which included mocking specific reporters as “neurotic,” “dumb,” and a “waste of time.” He retreated to softball interviews during the final weeks of the campaign with largely friendly interviewers, Fox News, and fringe media. Since the election, Trump has lashed out at The New York Times several times for its “BAD coverage.” Trump’s own incoming press secretary also admitted that he threatened to remove a journalist who was trying to ask the president-elect a question, and prominent Trump supporter and former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich applauded the threat, calling it “a signal, frankly, to all the other reporters that there are going to be real limits” for proper behavior.

Moreover, as Politico notes, Trump’s D.C. hotel is under “a 60-year lease with the federal General Services Administration, which owns the property.” Given that arrangement, a blanket ban on the press raises First Amendment concerns. Trump’s D.C. hotel has also been an ethical sticking point during Trump’s transition, as some in Congress have raised concerns about a conflict of interest between the president-elect’s business interests and his administration’s influence over the General Services Administration. From Politico’s January 18 article:

The Trump International Hotel in Washington is banning the media from its premises during inauguration week.

“Media is not allowed in this week in respect of the privacy of our guests,” Patricia Tang, the hotel’s director of sales and marketing wrote in an email.

A POLITICO reporter attempted to enter the hotel Wednesday morning for a previously scheduled breakfast meeting but was stopped at the door. He then identified himself as a journalist and was told “media” was not allowed.

President-elect Donald Trump and his three adult children own the project after winning a 2012 bid to redevelop D.C.’s Old Post Office. They have a 60-year lease with the federal General Services Administration, which owns the property.

All the legitimate reporters should be covering the protests since they can’t get into the hotel. Give it to him in spades.

Yes snowflake make sure to create chaos that you all so love to do! How much are you paid to do this? Humph!
You lost get use to it!
If the reporters reported the truth then there would be no need to ban them!

tbs, maybe if you got your news from other than Fox, Brietbart or Matt Drudge (all notorious for fake news), you would actually recognize real news when it hit you upside your head.

Yes if by “giving it to him in spades” you mean providing him with lots of free publicity, allowing him to call in his interviews and refuse to answer questions.

        1. itsfun January 21, 2017

No; I mean things like accusing him of removing a bust of MLK from the White House when no such thing was done. Did you happen to watch Chris Matthews last night? His reaction to the speech the President gave was giving it to him in spades. I guess if a man doesn’t give Matthews a tingling running down his leg, then the man must be a terrible person.

          1. The lucky one January 21, 2017

“accusing him of removing a bust of MLK from the White House” By whom and when was that accusation made? He just got in the WH yesterday.

Since Trump refuses to answer any legitimate questions, lies constantly, has brought people in who are clearly the very people he said he would drive out and continues to pander to tribal fears I don’t know what other response is possible. They should be investigating every thing he does, verify the truth or falseness of his assertions and dig into his financial ties.

It’s ludicrous to compare Trump to Hitler in view of what each has done but his style and appeal is very similar.

          2. itsfun January 21, 2017

He was accused of that yesterday by a left wing reporter after the press was in the WH for some kind of press meeting. The bust has to be shown in its place this morning. It is in the same spot it has always been in. He was accused of putting a bust of Churchill in its place. The press has been investigating every move the President has made ever since he jumped into the Presidential race.

          3. The lucky one January 21, 2017

It’s possible it was removed and then replaced after the furor. I really don’t care. There are far more serious things that should be looked at closely with the Trump Cabal.

“The press has been investigating every move the President has made ever since he jumped into the Presidential race.” Really? In my view they have been covering his every move but that is very different than “investigating”. There has been little critical examination of his many falsehoods and exaggerations in MSM.

          4. itsfun January 21, 2017

Do you believe that as much as the press hates President Trump they are not investigating everything he says and does?

          5. The lucky one January 21, 2017

Yes because I see no evidence of it in MSM, certainly not by Fox and very little in so-called liberal news sources like CNN. That may change though given that Trump’s extreme sensitivity to any criticism or challenge may provoke reporters to look below the surface, or pull back the curtain as it were.

I think if it was up to the reporters we would see much better coverage not just of Trump but of all the people he is bringing in to fill the swamp he falsely claimed he would drain. We also need mainstream coverage of the corporate oligarchy that pulls the strings of both parties, including Trump.

That should also include sellouts like Cory Booker. When a Dem is on the wrong side of the position taken by Ted Cruz it should shouted to the heavens.

President-elect Donald Trump and his three adult children own the
project after winning a 2012 bid to redevelop D.C.’s Old Post Office.
They have a 60-year lease with the federal General Services
    Administration, which owns the property.

If Trump is leasing the property, he is in control of who comes and goes, NOT the Leaser. This is the problem with Left wing Communist Propaganda, it’s based on nonsense and stupidity to fool the minions that believe this crap.

on second thought, he says he is not attracted to a woman once she has had a child…think he’s got serious mommy issues?

  5. Aaron_of_Portsmouth January 20, 2017

Despite the chameleon act of appearing somewhat deferential during his predictable inauguration speech, Donald still retains strong neo-Nazi tendencies. The ban on coverage is the latest in the signs of a neurotic with fascist reflexes.
