Weather Channel Meteorologist Calls Out Breitbart On Climate Change

Weather channel calls out Breitbart

The Weather Channel criticized Breitbart.com for falsely claiming that global warming temperatures have “plunged,” describing a Breitbart article as “a prime example of cherrying picking” data and pointing out that Breitbart denied the findings of “thousands of researchers and scientific societies.”

In a video accompanying a December 6 article, Weather Channel meteorologist Kait Parker explained to Breitbart, “Science doesn’t care about your opinion. Cherry-picking and twisting the facts will not change the future, nor the fact — not opinion — that the earth is warming. ”

The Weather Channel video and article roundly debunked the false and misleading claims in the November 30 Breitbart article by James Delingpole. In response to Delingpole’s claim that “[g]lobal land temperatures have plummeted by one degree Celsius since the middle of this year,” Parker pointed out that Delingpole had cherry-picked one set of data, adding in the video that “land temperatures aren’t an appropriate measure” and that the temperature decline disappears when you also account for sea surface temperatures. Delingpole also cited the science editor of the Global Warming Policy Foundation, David Whitehouse, to claim that “without the El Niño (and the so-called ‘Pacific Blob’) 2014-2016 would not have been record warm years,” yet Parker noted in the video that even if you “take out the El Nino spike in temperatures, 2015 and 2016 still come in as the warmest years on record,” as Carbon Brief has shown. Finally, Parker debunked Delingpole’s claim that a likely drop in global temperatures in 2017 is evidence against global warming, writing: “There is nothing unusual about a drop in global surface temperatures when going from El Niño to La Nina. These ups and downs occur on top of the long-term warming trend that remains when the El Niño and La Niña signals are removed.”

Parker also lamented the U.S. House Science Committee’s endorsement of the Breitbart article on Twitter and concluded her video with a helpful suggestion for Breitbart and a rallying cry for fellow scientists: “So next time you’re thinking about publishing a cherry-picked article, try consulting a scientist first, and to all my fellow scientists out there: Let’s make the facts louder than the opinions.”

Here is the video and full transcript of Parker’s comments (which are well worth watching):

KAIT PARKER: So last week, Breitbart.com published an article claiming that global warming was nothing but a scare and global temperatures were actually falling. Problem is, they used a completely unrelated video about La Nina, with my face in it, to attempt to back their point. What’s worse is that the U.S.Committee on Space, Science, & Technology actually tweeted it out. Here’s the thing: Science doesn’t care about your opinion. Cherry-picking and twisting the facts will not change the future, nor the fact — not opinion — that the earth is warming. So let’s break it down.

Their first claim is that “Global land temperatures have plummeted by one degree Celsius since the middle of this year — the biggest and steepest fall on record.” Now, that was based on one satellite estimate of global land temperatures, not a consensus. And second of all, land temperatures aren’t an appropriate measure. The earth is 70 percent water, and water is where we store most of our heat energy, so when you look at sea surface temperatures, and you combine that with land temperatures, you actually get a record high for November of 2016.

Their second claim: “It can be argued that without the El Nino … 2014-2016 would not have been record warm years.” Now, if you’re taking a look at the Arctic sea ice melting here in this video from NASA — when you actually normalize the data, aka take out the El Nino spike in temperatures, 2015 and 2016 still come in as the warmest years on record.

So that brings me to claim number three: “Many think that 2017 will be cooler than previous years.” Now, it is typical, yes, for temperatures to drop in a post-El Nino environment, but certainly not to record lows. If that claim was correct, we would have had global record lows all over the last century, and we haven’t seen that since 1911. The last time we fell below the 20th century average was in 1976, and guess what? That was directly following the 1974-1975 strong El Nino. So next time you’re thinking about publishing a cherry-picked article, try consulting a scientist first, and to all my fellow scientists out there: Let’s make the facts louder than the opinions.

The GOP and its allies attack on science is equivalent in its nihilism to the level of brain-dead reflex action of religious fanatics who rail against all forms of progress. The only progress the current philistines in power in America is the steady flow of money into their coffers and pockets as a result of denuding the earth of its resources.

I’m not sure if they’re railing against all forms of progress or merely defending their, profitable, right to pollute.

Stephen Colbert spoke about “truthiness” years ago. The Truthiness World is upon us.

      1. Aaron_of_Portsmouth December 9, 2016

Well, it’s clear that Donald has adapted quite well to using a technological tool called Twitter. But that is proportional to a chimp being taught to type but not understanding the principles behind the mechanism of a typewriter.
Trump and the GOP understand the phenomenon of weather just by stepping outdoors, but they don’t care to understand the basics of thermodynamics to understand how man-made manipulations can perturb this phenomenon in a wildly yet subtle unpredictable way.

But you’re right in that they are motivated by greed without a care for the outcome of destroying the environment. Just another aspect of being self-centered and having no concern for fellow citizens besides getting their votes.

Not to mention the survival of the species on planet Earth. The melting of polar caps and glaciers are just the tip of the iceberg. Rising sea temperatures are affecting climate patterns. Droughts are becoming common place in areas that not so long ago were fertile. The next crisis is going to be scarcity of potable water. All of this while the drill baby drill crowd fills their pockets.

Amen to that. Nowadays, I fret about settling down in an island community. The thought of visiting the Maldives, Laccadives, and a return trip to Zanzibar conjures up images of these islands being inundated in the near future.

Perhaps not surprisingly, the rest of the industrialized world is well under way in taking steps to mitigate the effects of global warming, including protecting coastal areas. We seem to be the only ones determined to reject science, and move backwards at a time when everyone else is moving forward. Consider visiting the Canaries…

          3. Aaron_of_Portsmouth December 9, 2016

I have considered the Canaries, and the Azores. Hopefully, I’ll get to Cork, Ireland early next year—assuming Donald hasn’t sparked an international row over some minor matter.

Looks like ‘Water World’ (Kevin Kosner) might not be so far fetched for this earth’s future. Especially with the greedy Oligarchy, CEOS and stockholders soon to be fully in charge of the US as of Jan 20. There are many ways I show my displeasure with the Deniers in Chief now. My TV will not be turned on Jan 20…at all. I can’t stand the sight or sound of the clown-in-chief DT. I will never eat at a Hardee’s ever again, never use the ‘self checkout lanes’ anywhere ever again. If I ever again go to a fast food place, I’ll go inside periodically to make sure it’s not mostly run by machines. When it is automated, that will be the last time I shop there. When I realized the KC Star is now run by a conservative, I canceled my ‘news’paper subscription. I only shop in Walmart in an emergency. The only MSM news I watch now are Chris Hayes, Rachael Maddow, Joy Reid because of the way the cable ‘news’ channels presented the fake news 24-7. There are a lot of ways to show displeasure of the greedy oligarchy. I’m sure I’ll find other ways as time passes. As of Jan 20, with the biggest Oligarch LIAR in chief in the WH, there will be chances galore. Yes, my actions may hurt some employees, but in the long run the greedy companies will suffer. Especially if we stick together. If ‘we the people’ can make some ‘boycott this company’ (like Hardee’s) days, maybe the oligarchs will get the message. That’s what it’s going to take, all of us sticking together. Before they are firmly entrenched. That is if it isn’t already too late.

Another tactic is to limit your purchases to what you absolutely need. We don’t have the votes to reject legislation and jobs creation like the GOP did to President Obama, but we can accomplish the same by limiting expenditures and investment.

Oh the irony…A Liberal reporter claiming the media cherry picked data to fit their agenda. The hypocrisy of the Liberal Left knows no bounds.

Yes, the irony of how the Liberal media has shoved fake news down the throats of everyone, only to get caught later.

Being a science luddite like yourself won’t help the island nations already seeing sea levels rise, nor will the people of the Arctic region agree with your nonsense, Skippy.
But you have no feelings or sense of connection with other humans on the globe–just a connection with fellow political neanderthals.
And that’s probably the result of a man who no longer has a connection with God, or with any form of religion except the worship of yourself with Trump and the GOP as your trifecta of idols.

        3. Karen_in_KC December 9, 2016

Talk about dumbed down! Republicans have doubled down and cornered the market on ‘dumbed down’.

        4. RED December 9, 2016

And right here is your comment is the absolute proof that sick Cons have no ability to think critically. And instead are the dumbest creatures upon the Earth. Try this, humans once taught that the Earth went around the Sun, later information revealed that this was not true. But in ignorant sick Con logic, it must be a lie because any change due to new information means it’s a conspiracy. The depths of stupidity is shocking!!!

One problem Kait Parker has is that about 30% of the folks working at the Weather Channel DO NOT believe in global warming! Kait is a staunch believer and produced this clip.
Unfortunately for you global hoax believers is that more earth scientist, folks with PhDs is science related areas, DO NOT support the NOAA, etc. claims that the earth is warming. One big mistake Kait made is when she said to combine land and sea temps. Well, it seems that sea temps HAVE not risen in decades. The “fact” she states is an estimated increase. They have been claiming that the higher temps are in the water, BUT they can’t seem to find any areas that actually have a higher recorded temp.
This was another ploy by Obama to try and force President Trump to go along with the charade.

        1. Paul Bass December 9, 2016

Yes sir we believe you over NASA.

And what is your nobel prize in that you know more than the combined knowledge of ALL the scientists at NASA, AAAS, AGU, AMA, ACS, AMS, AGS, and the APS.

Wow, are you smart, it is such a good thing you support Trump!

          1. InformedVoter December 10, 2016

There are plenty more links that debunk the stats of groups that receive billions each year. A current colleague was a member of the IPCC and left because he couldn’t handle the lies that group published as being a consensus of scientists supporting global warming.

  3. Mama Bear December 9, 2016

Capitalism protecting itself. How could these billionaire, bought and paid for anti-science Republicans possibly believe for one moment that the earth is warming and it is partially our fault and that there are things we can do to help? It would mean biting the hands that feed their power and lifestyle. It is just so sad that they do not care about their own children’s and grandchildren’s future ability to survive. A special place in hell is awaiting them.

    1. Godzilla December 9, 2016

    2. Joan December 9, 2016

A surprising number of them believe they will be “raptured” before climate change makes the planet unlivable. Personally, I believe that intelligent people will look to colonize other planets. The GOP can stay here and throw snowballs at each other.

      1. Mama Bear December 9, 2016

I love it! and I totally forgot about that whole sky god rapture thing!

        1. Vocalic Scissors December 9, 2016

I failed to get your point. Are we talking about the same billionaires in Trump’s cabinet?

          1. Mama Bear December 9, 2016

Simply because you don’t like a fact does not make it wrong. Anyone who has maintained a garden for more than a few years is seeing the effects of higher temperatures. In Las Vegas, NV, we have gone from having freezing temperatures much of December and January to having maybe a couple of weeks total and these aren’t hard freezes. We can plant tomato plants at least 2 weeks earlier than we could in 1990.
Why have the glaciers in Glacier National Park all but disappeared in the last 50 years?

    1. Dan S December 9, 2016

All the ice caves not too far from my home have pretty much disappeared over the last decade alone. While I’m looking at heavy snowfall outside right now doesn’t mean the earth isn’t warming

  5. InformedVoter December 9, 2016

Don’t be fooled. This is another attempt by Obama to try and force Trump’s position on global warming. Kait made a yuge mistake in claiming that if you combined the land and sea temps that you get a warming trend. Unfortunately for Kait, the actually recorded sea temps have been steady or even dropping for decades. The global warming fanatics used estimated water temps. Their claim is that they “know the earth must be getting warmer and that the higher temps are ‘hidden’ in the water”. The problem stems from the fact that they just can’t seem to find where the water temps are actually, recorded to be higher. The water temp sensors STILL functioning, seem to be recording lower temps, thus they claim that the units are about to fail and that the real temps must be higher. They did this as opposed to NOAA who changed the actually recorded land temps all over the world from the 1920’s and 1930’s to make their models “correct”.
Don’t be fooled, this is just bigger government trying to control the public.

  7. mememine December 9, 2016

It’s up to NASA now to “save the planet”………………….

    President Elect Donald Trump;

“NASA must allow their scientists to say their climate change end of the world is as real as they say the planet isn’t flat otherwise all climate change funding and policies will be terminated. And yes criminal charges WILL be laid against NASA officials and news editors for perpetuating decades of needless CO2 panic.”
