#EndorseThis: For Colbert, Kavanaugh Testimony Evokes Dead Serious Satire

There weren’t a lot of laughs in yesterday’s testimony by Christine Blasey Ford and Brett Kavanaugh before the Senate Judiciary Committee. And it was even less amusing to contemplate the prospect of Kavanaugh ascending to the country’s highest court.

Yet the Trump nominee’s prevaricating and often shrill testimony is highly susceptible to satire — an opportunity that Stephen Colbert cannot resist. He transforms the nominee’s silly lie about “boofing” into vaudeville.

What makes this Colbert monologue special is not the jabbing and joking, but the dead serious peroration addressed to Kavanaugh himself, exposing the deepest truth of this historical moment.
