BOSTON — A memorial for the anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombings ended Tuesday with a thunderous speech from Vice President Joe Biden, who closed an afternoon highlighting remarks from bombing survivors and dignitaries.

“We will never yield, we will never cower, America will never, ever, ever stand down,” Biden said. “We are Boston. We are America. We respond, we endure, we overcome, and we own the finish line! God bless you all, and may God protect our troops.”

The afternoon will continue with  a flag-raising and a moment of silence at the marathon finish line at 2:49 p.m., the moment the bombs exploded.

In Washington, President Barack Obama planned to observe the anniversary with a private moment of silence at the White House.

One year after two pressure-cooker bombs tore through the crowd at the finish line at the Boston Marathon, killing three people and injuring more than 260 others, people throughout the city are pausing to reflect on the day with tributes, prayers, speeches and music.

At a private ceremony in the morning, families of the victims placed wreaths at the two bombing sites — in front of the Forum restaurant on Boston’s Boylston Street, and near Marathon Sports a block away. Police honor guards will stand sentry around the wreaths all day.

The marathon will be held this year on Monday. It is expected to be the second most crowded field ever, after the marathon’s centennial in 1996.

Biden spoke at the city tribute at the Hynes Convention Center close to the bombings. Both families and public figures attended the event, including the family of victim Lu Lingzi, who came from China for it.

A year after the marathon, many victims who previously had not spoken to the media have been featured in local newspapers and TV stations. The family of Martin Richard, 8, who was killed in the bombing, appeared in a lengthy two-part Boston Globe story about recovering from the bombing. Jane Richard, Martin’s sister, who is now 8, lost a leg in the bombing.

Signs along the Boylston Street finish line area remind residents to be “Boston Strong,” but no formal memorial has been erected at the bombing sites. Still, those who were near the finish line a year ago say they think about it every day.

Gerardo DeFabritiis is a manager at the Tannery, an upscale shoe and clothing store across from the site where the first bomb went off. His daughter and son-in-law were visiting the store on marathon day last year and were about to leave when he called them back in to see a new line of T-shirts. The bomb went off soon after.

“They would have been right there,” he said, remembering, pointing to the spot where the bomb went off. He remembers walking outside after the bombing and seeing a woman on the ground, bleeding. He thinks about the bombing whenever he passes over that little piece of sidewalk.

He learned something from that day, he said: “When your time comes, your time comes.”

It has been discovered by searches of the younger brother’s effects that he toyed with TWO kinds of radicalism: Islamic, because of his homeland, and American neo-Nazi white supremacist anti-Semitic radicalism. These would seem to be contradictory to most Americans, since they ultimately want to destroy each other; but they have one thing in common, namely hatred of Jews. And both are dangerous, but American radicalism may be more dangerous to America.

When a study came out in 2009 (ironically, just as a new President who would be more objectionable to white supremacists was inaugurated), showing the dangers of right wing militia groups, anti-government fanatics, white supremacists, anti-Semitic, anti-minority, anti-immigrant armed groups, and the STUDY was attacked by right wing news media such as Fox, and by pundits such as Rush (who are “supposed” to represent conservative but legitimate political players, not murderers, counterfeiters, bank robbers, etc.), it was quietly de-publicized and further research into right wing, rather than Muslim, terrorists defunded. This despite the fact that, until 9/11, the worst attack of terrorism in the last century was carried out by a white supremacist, in Oklahoma City.

Since then, while Muslim terrorists have killed 21 Americans on American soil, right-wing American terrorists have killed 34, but the media has not noticed; every Muslim attack is touted as another piece of a long term war (which is true), but every right-wing attack is dismissed as the action of a “lone wolf” with no connection to the others, or to any larger movement (which is definitely not true). The latest killings in Kansas City, Kansas, at a Jewish community center and a Jewish retirement home, have some interesting connections, which no one but Rachel Maddow (a “radical liberal?” if so, a “radical liberal” with some FACTS) has reported as being significant. The suspect, who can be heard on the news video shouting “Heil Hitler” in the police car after being apprehended, was an active member of The Order in the late 1980s, and part of a counterfeiting ring which financed The Order and, through them, other organizations such as the KKK and Aryan Nation. When another member was caught at a state fair passing a counterfeit $20 bill, and the diaper bag he was carrying was found to have a “wad” of them, this current suspect was part of a team that went to his house and cleaned out the evidence before police arrived to search it. But then he got scared and turned on his buddies, getting 15 of them arrested and charged with everything from bank robbery to murder and SEDITION (attempting to overthrow our government by force). When an all-white jury totally acquitted 13 of the 15, this man went on the run, changing names and moving from state to state, but NOT hiding his extreme views while living under other names. And he was the one who was finally caught the other day in Kansas.

Why would the conservative pundits, media and members of Congress have wanted publicity on right wing extremists suppressed? Perhaps because they are not “conservative” in the patriotic American tradition (like Barry Goldwater or Ronald Reagan), but are themselves financed by, and connected with, extremists such as Ted Nugent (and Glenn Beck himself, while using Christian and American rhetoric, is very close to endorsing the views, and methods, of the Aryan Nation) and the Koch brothers, whose father founded the John Birch Society. They claim that every policy and every politician who is LESS extreme far right than themselves is practically a Communist, maybe even a “card carrying member” of the Communist Party of the USA. And thus, they claim that if they continue to lose at the polls, they will take up “Second Amendment solutions.” Sounds like this fellow in Kansas, and a number of others over the years, already have.

So let us honor the fallen and injured from the Boston Marathon last year, and continue striving to bring people like young Tsarnaev to justice, and uncover future Muslim attacks … but ALSO continue working to prevent future American-style extremist groups from launching attacks, which will include getting the TRUTH about their connection with “official” and “legitimate” conservative political forces in front of the voters.
