A Ham-Handed Solution To A Problem That Doesn’t Exist

A Ham-Handed Solution To A Problem That Doesn’t Exist

Bill Internicola had to show his papers.

He received a letter last month from the Broward County, Fla., Supervisor of Elections informing him the office had “information from the state of Florida that you are not a United States citizen; however, you are registered to vote.” So Internicola had to prove he is an American. He sent the county a copy of his Army discharge papers.

Internicola is 91 years old. He was born in Brooklyn. He is a veteran of the Second World War. He earned a Bronze Star for his part in the Battle of the Bulge. Yet he was required to prove to a county functionary that he is entitled to vote in an American election.

We learn from reporter Amy Sherman’s story last week in The Miami Herald that this is part of a campaign by Florida Gov. Rick Scott, a Republican, to weed noncitizens off the rolls of the state’s voters. Initially, Florida claimed 180,000 were possible non-citizens. That number was eventually whittled way down to about 2,600 people. In Miami-Dade County, where the largest number of them live, 385 have been verified as citizens. Ten — 10! — have admitted they are ineligible or asked to be removed from the rolls.

The Herald recently analyzed the list and found it dominated by Democrats, independents and Hispanics. Republicans and non-Hispanic whites were least likely to have their voting rights challenged.

Voter suppression? Intimidation? No way, says Florida Republican Party Chairman Lenny Curry. He blasted Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson for criticizing the effort. Nelson, he said, “asks our public servants to ignore the threat to electoral integrity.”

  • There is a term fopr blatant manufacturing of so-called voter fraud to try to pressure voters likely to vote against you off the balloting.

    It’s called Voter Fraud!

Like so many conservative stunts, they are guilty of what they accuse others of, using the accusation itself to try to get away with it!

    • Yes and voter suppression

  • bud2011

In order to see AG Eric Holder you have to show a picture ID. Voter ID is a way of preventing ACORN from promoting voter fraud.

Florida? The Chad state? The state where one Bush brother helped another Bush brother get re-elected? Florida? Where the US Board of Elections has already told Republicans in that state to stop suppressing the vote by using illegal tactics? Well, well, well. So now we come down to it….Florida…the state that Republicans know will break RoMONEY’s chance to be elected and isn’t it soooo sweet how FL GOP ignore election rules?
So, I’m guessing this is more of those Republican bully bois at their finest…always ready, willing and able to pull off any snaky tactic to win. For all their perfect teeth, slicked back hair and $1,000 suits, these Republican Little Lord Fauntleroys are frauds in disguise. Time for big time fines or maybe some jail time.

  • Eleanore Whitaker

Bud…You have no idea what you are talking about do you? In order to see any member of an administration’s cabinet, you need White House Clearance. That’s for the protection of cabinet members according to ancient US history which you’d know if ever you had to get White House clearance.
No such clearance is needed for Americans born in this country who are known as “citizens”. This BS Republicans are pulling suddenly insisting upon IDs is a tactic to insure that the elderly and those born in areas where no birth certificates were ever issued 85 years ago are denied their voting rights.
You bully boi Republicans will do anything you can to win, win, dangle your carrots and push your envelopes. Sorry, not this time.

    • Under Reaganomics Bush 1-2 Debt was not an issue . Debt skyrocketed all with GOP congress approval Look at the long GOP reign 1980 Reagan Bush 2008 – worst crash in 80 yrs – 2 very long wars based on lies -war profits Look where that led us Global Disaster Low wages – good jobs gone overseas w/ Bush tax cuts – huge – corp tax cuts – deregulation and massive un regulated Wall St bankers greed

As a former Republican woman, I have no intentions of pandering to the needs of prissy pants Republican males who are nothing more than self-appointed Masters of the Universe. A cookie cutter does a better job of cutting out the clones Republican males have been stamping out of themselves.

    • Well said Women must stick together against sexist GOP old coots trying to control us like it was 1959

    • Glad to have you on the Dems. side ! We are not perfect, but we care more for our fellow men or woman ! ! !

    • catball

Lady I love the way you think. I could’nt have said it any better. I too have jumped the fence from the right to the left.

  • joceandre

Yes I believe that they will more than try to steal the election, specially after the report I SAW ON MSNBC yesterday about the KOCH brothers and the money that they are willing to spend. With 17.5 billion dollars for each of them these people could actually wipe out all the pain and suffering in the U S today if they wanted to .The only thing we could do is to get out there and vote after all with all their money they cannot buy Mitt Romney a brain.

  • bud2011, the only voter fraud we have seen is GOP activist James O’Keefe’s sending some guy into a polling place to vote under the name of Attorney General Eric Holder. Funny even without the required Photo ID card it didn’t work, they could not prove you could show up at a voter poll and vote under anyone’s name you choose!!!!!!

  • howa4x

They can’t win with their ideas so they either have to buy it or steal it.

    You Surprised?

What happens in Florida to favor the American Taliban Party Republicans should not come as any surprise. After all, the biggest Medicare crook in history is sitting in the governor’s chair.

He may need help and will bring ex-AG Kathryn Harris out of retirement to rule on the issue.

Too bad the ATP (American Taliban Party) has yet to realize that the United States is no longer controlled by the rich, old, religious, anti-union, sexist, bigoted white guys. It may take them awhile realize this fact, but eventually they will get the idea.

Democrats must get it into their slow-learner heads that when November 6th rolls around they better vote the party even before they have their first cup of coffee and potty break.

  • quasm

    Mr. Pitts;

Remembering the debacle on the 2000 election, getting ten ineligible voters off the rolls plus those who will try to register illegally is a worthwhile goal. What’s the big deal? I had to prove my right to vote when I registered.

It seems someone is terrified that their chances to win an election is in jeopardy if illegals are not allow to vote.

  • The Republican’s tactics are sounding more and more like the type the Russians used before the Communist party imploded. Hmmm. They both start with the letter R. Nah, it’s just a coincidence…isn’t it?

  • gargray

All this campaign money, how many starving people this money would feed. How many unemployed workers would it put back to work. They have plenty of money to attack someone but not enough to pay their share of taxes.

  • Not only that but FL didn’t offer an apology to someone who fought in the Second World War and earned a Bronze Star for his part in the Battle of the Bulge for the same rights they were denying him to do..VOTE…. Wthamsandwiches is really going on America… FL needs to bow down to this man and give him a GOLD STAR FOR DEALING WITH THAT BULLSHIGGADDY.. SMH @ FL….

  • @ Quasm Did you receive a letter stating that you were not a United States Citizen when you know you are indeed one having been born in Brooklyn. To prove u are at the age of 91…Give me a break and save your breath i for one am not trying to hear that……You get the big Duces for that………

  • tutidiez

Republicans are going to push up their game when the voting count comes as they always do here in Florida, we have to Remember that the Political representation here in Florida is mostly Republicans, and they will use all kind of pitfalls to get away with it at the time of counting votes, specially here in the southern part of Florida, Cubans are experts on cheating and fraud specially when it comes to elect Cubans to represent them in the Political arena, and most of it in the Medicare field and all other Social Benefits, approximately 70% to 80% receive benefits, but half of them are fraud and we have to remember they are all Republicans even none Republican President has ever done anything for the them, this remind me of the famous word “MASOCHISM”

  • Al Gore should have fought Florida when he had the give the GOP any footing they are going to slam you! The GOP fight to win…they are targeting hispanics (Even though most hispanics in Florida are legal). Just like they are targeting minorities in other states. These people have no morals. Their only concern is winning by any means necessary. Democrats should wake up!!

  • pogo_patti

Don’t hold your breath until they are fined or even chastised for their deeds. They are GOP and as such, entitled to be treated as superior! This is the same Party that pulled off Watergate….the damage was done and effective for quite a while before anyone went to jail. By the way, I always wanted to know if the GOP had to recompense the Democratic Party for their losses and how much it cost the Democrats and the USA for their shenanigans. It certainly shattered loyalty and trust which has no price. Like spoiled children, they just do not play by the rules and it always costs this country dearly!

  • Fla is full of gullible scared folks who buy the lies-smears the GOP state pushes .
It worked in 2000 Likely will work again Fox Hannity Rush & 800 Rsuh wannbees
radio talk show hosts spread lies- hate- fear to millions every day. Most folks do not read, check facts or use critical thinking skills . political Ads news bites – corp media does not tell us all the facts Some try to scare us and demonize all that Obama does or says .
Its manipulation pure and simple Now they have Citizesn United cash from who knows who Could be corps – foreign countries- dictators – billionaires , haters of democracy .
Bin laden is DEAD US auto industry is ALIVE Economy is slowly picking up if GOP had not stalled blocked everything US would be doing better Worst crash in 80 yrs takes time to recover from Thats common sense

  • The fact that the affluent, or 1%-ers, are “conservative” *i.e. angst-ridden, and fearful of CHANGE, any change, would lead every ordinary, hardworking American to question NOT ONLY THEIR (the 1%-ers’) motives but more precisely THE MANNER IN WHICH THEY AMASSED THER RICHES…….

The current gov. of Florida is a man who amassed his “fortunes” as CEO of one of the more INFAMOUS HEALTHCARE “PROVIDERS” – where fortunes have litterally been made over the sick and dying!

Communism may have been defeated as a universal menace, “VIGILANCE IS THE ETERNAL PRICE FOR FREEDOM” is still, and will always be, THE Slogan we Americans need to live by, especially with a seemingly revived and unfettered (by Law or Conscience!) CAPITALISM-American/Romney-style!

  • Its simply disgraceful what Scott is doing. The same voters list was used to get him into office he is now fearful Obama might get in so he is out to demolish a system that worked for him. Some people do expect Obama to take three years and clear up the disaster Bush created in eight years . The GOPhers are at it again watch out for them they are cunning

  • The Republicans will stoop as low as they can to keep Democrats from voting. We can’t let that happen. 16% of Americans live in poverty — that’s a higher percentage rate than some 3rd world countries. That percetage rate will go even higher if the Republicans take over & strip money from public schools, health care and other social services & give it to the military (our military is already 17 times larger than the 2nd largest military in the world) & the rich (in the form or tax loopholes & tax cuts). In the 60s & 70s the top 2% of the wealthiest people in the U.S. owned 8% of all the wealth. Today they own 40%. If we keep going like this we are going to look like France just before their revolution. Either that, or look like North Korea where they spend just about all their money on their miliatary and vary little on anything else — like food for their people. Today in the U.S., more than 1 in 5 children go hungry every day. Just google child hunger in America to see for yourselves.

  • Did anyone ever question – out loud – why the Koch Bros and other, including the presidential candidate Romney, are willing to spend BILLIONS – that’s spelled with a realllllyyy capital B, probably heading toward TRILLIONS, to win an election. If you truly are fit for the job, and honest enough to tell people the truth, and intelligent enough to know the facts, why is it necessary for you to SELL YOUR SOUL TO THE BIG MONEY BOYS, AS ROMNEY HAS? I’m just one person, but I surely would hope I’m not the only person who has wondered and asked this question. I also hope that come November people have wised up and will not be willing to sell their souls to big money!

  • Its so obvious, isn’t it? How do so many on the right fail to see? Perhaps they just don’t care so long as they win.
