Of course, had the Republicans in Congress actually funded the VA based on their needs, this wouldn’t have happened.
For a group that claims to be patriotic and pro-defense, here is a list of what some of their budget items call for:
    1. Reduction in the percentage of the pay raise for active duty military.
    2. Reduction in the COLA for military retirees.
    3. Cutbacks in the medical facilities at military bases.
    4. Closing base commissaries, forcing military families to buy groceries off-base at full-market prices. (This is especially a problem in high-food cost areas like Alaska and Hawaii)
    5. Reduction in funding of VA facilities.
    6. Closing VA facilities, especially satellite clinics.
7 Reducing Military educational assistance programs.
However, Congressional Republicans have been taking care of themselves by not voting to reject their own automatic pay raise. And they are making sure the defense contractors in their home districts keep getting funding for projects that the Pentagon neither wants nor needs!

Ah, disqus_iv, there really isn’t much of anything new about Republicans showing their avid patriotism by passing massive funding for defense contracts while screwing over the rank and file. I remember when a Republican politico came on base back in the 1950s and bragged about how he had helped get us a 1% raise while neglecting to mention that it was in lieu of the 5% raise proposed by the Democrats. He also bragged about how he had brought home a huge contract for a local company (that never delivered a usable weapon) but completely failed to mention that he had voted down funds for the VA hospitals treating vets back from Korea and helped cancel funding for housing for married personnel.

Thanks for the reminder, something that needs to be pounded home to ALL voters between now and next election. Shinseki was fired by W for refusing to draw up a plan of invasion for Iraq that required the low numbers Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld wanted (finally got the man they wanted with Franks). Shinseki has been trying since Obama picked him for head of the VA to bring this organization back into line and serve those who have served this country so well. However, with a Republican House that REFUSES to provide adequate funding – you know, WTF. I know at least two vets who have health issues that are not being dealt with adequately, and they both just love W. I love them both, but they are both products of Republican propaganda.

As Kipling once wrote about his country’s military and how they were treated:

An’ it’s Tommy this, and Tommy that, and Tommy, ‘ow’s your soul?
But it’s Long Grey Line of ‘Eroes when the drums begin to roll!

(Tommy Atkins was the generic nickname of British soldiers, who were often tried like a racial minority in public accommodations when off duty; like our GI Joe nickname in WWII, or Billy Yank and Johnny Reb in the Civil War.)
