Smart. Sharp. Funny. Fearless.

First of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself—nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror…

–President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, 1932 Inaugural Address

One time, my wife and I went walking near a pasture where nine mares grazed. I knew them all by name. Suddenly and for no obvious reason the herd stampeded, galloping by as if their lives depended upon it. It was a thrilling sight, like being right down on the rail at the race track.

But what were they running from? There are no predators around here capable of harming a horse. As the leaders thundered by, I noticed two fillies at the back getting skeptical. They kept looking behind and catching each other’s eye as if to say “What’s this about? I don’t see anything, do you?”

As the fillies pulled up, the leaders thundered headlong into a run-in shed about 100 yards ahead and stopped. The proximate cause of the stampede had been a fat black horse fly on the boss mare’s rump. As soon as she went under the roof, the insect flew off.

It was quite comical, actually.

We Americans didn’t used to be like that. We prided ourselves on being a pragmatic, self-confident people — more like the skeptical fillies than the thundering herd. But if you believe a lot of what you read in the news media and see on TV, much of the public currently lives on the edge of panic.

The role of cable TV news channels in stoking hysteria has reached new depths of shamelessness. They do it purely for the ratings, you know.

And if you don’t, the barbaric propagandists of ISIS certainly do.

Typical headlines: “ISIS Threat: Fear of Terror Attack Soars to 9/11 High, NBC News/WSJ Poll Finds. By the ghastly tactic of beheading American and British citizens on TV, Islamic extremists fighting to establish a Sunni fundamentalist “caliphate” have stampeded the nation.

Millions of Americans who wanted out of Middle Eastern sectarian wars now think the U.S needs to get back in.

If ISIS’s goals are insane, so are their tactics. Politically speaking, no U.S. president could have failed to react to the organization’s mad provocations. Exactly how President Obama’s bombing campaign will end, nobody can say — although that hasn’t stopped a thousand propagandists from trying.

Invading Iraq at all was the big mistake, and it says here that getting sucked back in to yet another Middle Eastern ground war would be to repeat it. A big part of the problem is the unreasoning fear, far out of proportion to any actual threat the nation faces.

Although my saying so infuriated certain readers, I once wrote that Osama bin Laden’s “deluded followers posed no military threat to the integrity of the United States or any Western nation. At worst they were capable of theatrical acts of mass murder like the 9/11 attacks. And that was sufficient evil indeed.”

But fear made us reckless. I’d say the same about ISIS. For all its ruthlessness, ISIS has no Air Force, no Navy, and a ragtag Army incapable of projecting power anywhere but the desert wastes of Iraq and Syria. Helping the Kurds defend themselves against a genocidal massacre is one thing; trying to impose a pax Americana on the entire region quite another.

Quivering in our beds for fear of a terrorist strike should be beneath the American people. It’s impossible to respect shameless politicians like Arkansas Senate candidate Tom Cotton, who actually warned viewers on a TV town hall that ISIS terrorists might collaborate with Mexican drug cartels to “infiltrate our defenseless border and attack us right here in places like Arkansas.

Armies of Mexican Islamic terrorists descending upon El Dorado and Texarkana! For somebody who comes advertised as brainy, Cotton appears incapable of concealing how dumb he thinks voters are.

Then there’s Ebola, which cable TV also shamelessly hypes for ratings. “I’ve followed cable news for many, many years now,” writes The Daily Banter’s Bob Cesca “and not since the lead-up to the Iraq War has the American news media behaved with such recklessness.”

Among a hundred possible examples, Cesca was aghast at CNN’s interviewing novelist Robin Cook, who once wrote a thriller about a conspiracy to spread Ebola foiled by a hero-doctor.

“The real issue here is how quickly it can mutate, and how that’s gonna affect the transmission…” Cook said. “Perhaps this virus cannot live very long in the air. I don’t know. But I don’t think anybody knows.”

Actually, people do know.  Every professional health agency in the world agrees that Ebola cannot be transmitted through the air. As for mutating, Scientific American reports that there’s “almost no historical precedent for any virus to change its basic mode of transmission so radically.”

The real thing is bad enough without spreading lurid disinformation.

  1. Dominick Vila says:

The decision to invade Iraq, and the myopic policy decisions that followed, had nothing to do with fear, and much to do with political imperatives, greed, and the need to give the illusion that something was being done to avenge 9/11 when, in fact, the country most responsible for that tragedy got away with murder.
It is true, however, that fear seems to dominate the psyche of many Americans. Many among us are still fighting the commies, many are terrified of Islamic terrorists, some go as far as fearing an invasion of the USA, and when it comes to things like Ebola, the Avian flu, and tuberculosis, some among us are in state that borders in paranoia.
Indeed, what happened to the country that only feared fear itself?

    • TZToronto says:

The fear of Islamic terrorists has replaced the fear of communists for many Americans. I know people who think that every Muslim they see is ready to murder Americans. Could it be that Americans simply need someone to hate and fear? Or could it be that some media outlets just love to fan the flames of barely smoldering embers, trying to make something out of nothing, trying to get people to tune in for the next over-hyped headline that will sustain the irrational hate and fear. And there is no lack of politicians who are willing to jump aboard the fear train. People should note that the flu will kill many more people in the USA than Ebola will. Given that fact, why will many people refuse to get a flu shot? Maybe death by Ebola just just a lot more hideous than death by flu.

      • adler56 says:

Walk through any mall in America and you’ll see why so many are scared **itless. They are so fat they can barely walk around their car- 300 pounders are more common than in the NFL.

      • idamag says:

        I wonder that, too.

      • joe schmo says:

Think about how lax everything is nowadays….. Guess we are just gluttons for punishment. You’ll see……

      • Independent1 says:

It’s all about ratings! Virtually all TV shows do whatever they can to get the listener/watcher ratings that the shows producers are told they must meet in order to keep the shows on the air. So the producers of today’s TV programs are going to do whatever it takes to get and maintain the ratings they need to not be cut!!

If that means ignore all the lies and distortions that many hosts and guests on today’s news programs allow to get fed to the public, so be it, if those lies and distortions are exciting or threatening enough to jack up the ratings.

So what if the public is mislead causing Americans to panic!!

So what if the lies and distortions even impact the results of elections!! Which bring more misery into people’s lives!!

So what!! It’s all about the ratings!!!

        And ratings translate into $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

    • adler56 says:

You’re right- but the public was told it was fear of more attacks here- so Americans are just dopes to believe Republican racist losers.

      • idamag says:

Exactly, the war criminals used fear. Remember the “mushroom cloud?” And then to keep them scared they had the color coding. The country has been scared ever since.

        • TZToronto says:

That color coding was ridiculous. What did it accomplish other than making people think there was a terrorist lurking around the airport, waiting to get on a plane. Why do people have to know what the threat level is? Wouldn’t it be more effective to pretend that there’s no threat and let the bad guys think they have a clear path to their dastardly deeds?

          • idamag says:

That color coding was a scare tactic that worked very well on the people in the land of the “brave.”

        • Independent1 says:

Remember Cheney in the run up to the Iraq war claiming that Saddam had WMDs and he was multiplying them and multiplying them so he could use them on his enemies and his neighbors and even ON US!!!!

          • idamag says:

Yes I remember They created the fear and kept feeding it and our “brave” citizens were willing to give up the store to feel safe.

      • joe schmo says:

I would never walk around in rose colored glasses. The world is not the Utopian ideal that you proclaim it to be. Nowadays we are less safe than we ever have been in modern history. Liberal laws have made it way to easy to kill someone and get away with it.

I know people who lived in Europe before and after WWII. Different times. They say that a woman could walk the streets at night unattended and never be touched by anyone. If a murder was committed and, they knew who committed it, the perpetrator was killed. There were no rapes, few robberies, no drugs, no murders. Rehabilitation only works for a select few and you are the people who want to remove our 2nd amendment rights. I really don’t think the U.S. is ready for that one. I rest my case

        • TheSkalawag929 says:

“Liberal laws have made it way to easy to kill someone and get away with it.” What Liberal law or laws would that be? Surely you aren’t calling the “stand your ground laws” passed in predominately conservative states by conservative legislatures Liberal laws.
As for the remembrances of pre and post WWII Europe I would say I would say that they are much fantasized just like the GOP memories of yesteryear here in America. You are the one wearing the rose colored glasses.

        • highpckts says:

I lived in the time of post WWII and we could leave our doors unlocked, walk the streets at night with no fear! The 2nd amendment has always been here but the GOP now thinks that it is good to have a weapon in every home so load em up boys because everyone is out to get ya! Now who’s peddling fear??

    • idamag says:

And that invasion left Iraq vulnerable to the terrorist groups.

    • elw says:

I do agree that many Americans fears the wrong things and give too much weight to what they hear on TV and cable news. However, I think the authors point was that fears is being fed with misinformation by the media. I agree with him, the media has given up on Journalism and relies more on entertainment. There is very little attention to details or getting information correct; it is all about filling a 24/7 time slot and attracting advertiser for their programs. They thieve on fear and confusion – so the make that happen.

  2. Melinda Killie says:

Franklin Delano Roosevelt was adressing fear itself. They were in the middle of a depression. No one knew how it all would turn out, but people swallowed their fear and moved on in hope. My question is, what happened to American hope? Just about everyone has become so despondent. Have the “fear mongers” of this nation really gained that much of an upper hand?? That would be sad indeed. This country needs to keep moving, swallowing it’s fear and moving on towards hope. We need to rise up, kick ass and take names!

    • idamag says:

If you can scare enough people, you can control them. We used to be “The land of the free and the home of the brave.” Now we are becoming the land of the scared.

      • joe schmo says:

Does this sound like Liberals or what. Where we Conservatives tend to be the skeptics, you people keep idle worshiping false prophets.

        • TheSkalawag929 says:

The difference between Liberals and conservatives is that Liberals are concerned with real provable threats that exist.
Conservatives make up shit to be scared of and scare people with.

        • highpckts says:

Conservatives are not skeptics! They are deniers! They won’t even come to the table and discuss possibilities! They have one mind set and that is keeping the power and keeping the people in the dark about their agenda!

          • joe schmo says:

Oh yes they are…. Conservatives are very skeptical about their government no matter which side they are on. How would you even know? Have you visited a Conservative site in your life? Judging by your answer, rarely. Deniers? No the deniers sitting in a self proclaimed Utopia wearing rose colored glasses seems to fit your side much better.

          • highpckts says:

Conservatives are NOT skeptical! They are just pissed they aren’t in power!! No Utopia here! I know full well what’s going on and the GOP is prodding it along to the detriment of us all!!

  3. adler56 says:

Americans have become the dumbest people on the planet- at least those
    voting republican have.

    • joe schmo says:

Why don’t you start taking a world approach by getting outside your MSNBC bubble. Start reading Pravda or BBC online. Talk to people overseas. Only then will you become more aware of what is going on in this country.

You talk the talk. Now walk the walk…..

      • latebloomingrandma says:

You need a wide range of sources to know what’s going on. I prefer books.

        • joe schmo says:

Books just like the news media can realllyy misconstrue the truth. Specifically because they are merely one person’s point of view on one particular subject. I tend to believe a story more if someone has participated or been at a certain event. Here say is mostly meaningless and can be fidged.

      • TheSkalawag929 says:

Interesting you recommend those that you disparage as your news source.

        • joe schmo says:

I have never disparaged Pravda or BBC. I also know about European news from family but they tend to mimic the U.S. so I am often skeptical as to what family says. However, I do know what is going on across the pond.

          • TheSkalawag929 says:

Pravda is a Russian newspaper run by communist. The BBC online is a news service in a Parliamentary Monarch that leans toward socialism. You have disparaged both of these forms of government in your rantings.
Since you don’t live in Europe and you don’t believe your relatives that live do how do you know so much about what is going on? I believe that you are practicing republican rule #2. You’re making stuff up.

          • joe schmo says:

Sorry, that is where you are misinformed. Putin has an 83% approval rating. He is a Capitalist:)

BBC is another retrospect. They did not join the EU and are kind of on the fence. However, you are correct, they are very socialist. Just another opinion.

I hear from my relatives how they are being invaded by Muslims and are being infiltrated by many countries. (They hate it) They are facing the same issues we are but hang on to the American ideal yet owe their souls to Russia because of the energy they need.

LOL, you wish I was making things up. You need to get out and explore international waters. It may open your eyes a bit more. Americans are so isolated within a media bubble and tend to believe everything they see on T.V. and read.

          • TheSkalawag929 says:

I don’t know where you dig up the stuff that you post but you should put it back in the hole from whence it came. It’s stinking to high heaven.

          • idamag says:

Actuall;y, I did check out that source. Not true.

  4. F R says:

Dominick!! How are you? I was out of the country for a while visiting my beloved Island.” En mi viejo SanJuan cuantos suenos forje en mis noches de infancia….
    Anyways,
For those that want to draw us full scale back to the Middle East, please bring back the draft..You keep on telling everyone how much you love America, but yet you don’t spill your own blood or that of your relatives, you want to leave that for others…Show your true Love for our COUNTRY.
BRING BACK THE DRAFT , you don’t have to fight ,you can run back and populate Canada like you have done in the past….

    • joe schmo says:

I finally agree with you on this one. What about that cut of soldiers in the Military…..all 90,000 of them. What a joke.

      • highpckts says:

So if you are anti war why do we need to maintain a “strong” military? That you are willing to pay taxes for but you balk at raising taxes for anything that pertains to the welfare of this country? Seems to me your priorities are skewed!

        • joe schmo says:

To protect our shores. We humans have not yet surpassed the being civilized test. We still garner respect which I feel is the most important word in the human language. How far do you really think apologies will get you when you are faced with global tyrants?

    • whodatbob says:

Screw the draft. On your 18th birthday if you have completed High School you are inducted into the military for 2 years active duty. If you dropout of school before graduation you are inducted immediately to serve until your 22nd birthday. Those physically or mentally unfit for military service must serve in other capacities. College can wait until you have served your Country.

Your post does not address the overwhelming “chicken little” mindset in our country. I, also, have no answer.

    • tdm3624 says:

Gasp! Did you bring back EBOLA!? (j/k)

    • latebloomingrandma says:

And a “war tax” that would specifically hit the rich the hardest. Then we’ll see how long the war mongering lasts.

  5. joe schmo says:

So who exactly is this directed at? Liberals? Conservatives? I think it is specifically targeted at the latter. My My what a crafty web we weave. What a narcissistic attitude to put FULL and ALL blame on Conservatives. It is almost laughable when you people run around screaming about Global Warming….oops isn’t it now Climate Change and blab about how we need to spread the wealth or how the African American is being disenfranchised by the police.

We Americans didn’t used to be like that. We prided ourselves on being a
pragmatic, self-confident people — more like the skeptical fillies than
the thundering herd. But if you believe a lot of what you read in the
news media and see on TV, much of the public currently lives on the edge
of panic. (Just what is the writer eluding to?)

In case you aren’t aware of this, BOTH PARTIES ARE AT FAULT for fear mongering. The first part of this statement I can relate too and I believe many Conservatives also can. ‘Skeptical.’ At least we aren’t the followers in this herd.

    • elw says:

Oh, stop being so paranoid, he is blaming the media. However, if the shoe fits, go ahead and you are with that defensive reply.

      • joe schmo says:

Why don’t you stop being paranoid then. Get over the whole Global Warming initiative. Stop chastising Christianity, Stop screaming about oil, Stop being pheobic about Gay rights…. When you stop we will too. Now who’s calling the kettle black?

        • Independent1 says:

And the NMs master idiot keeps on with the lies!!!

Explain this idiot!!! Today’s CO2 ratios that haven’t existed in 650,000 years.

          • joe schmo says:

I hear the East is going to have another run on that ‘uber’ cold weather we experienced last year and what about all that polar ice? You see Independent, judging by all your posts, since you are the most paranoid of the bunch, it just goes to prove my point. Liberals are just as paranoid or even more like ‘chicken little’ than the Conservatives.

          • Independent1 says:

Your post served nothing but to further show your ignorance.

Paranoia is the fear of something that is not really a danger – like the GOP’s paranoia about voter fraud which DOES NOT EXIST.

You clearly don’t know the difference between that and PREPAREDNESS. Taking steps today to head of A REAL DANGER TOMORROW!!!.

Just like the CDC wanted to do back in the early 2000s about finding a cure for Ebola. But as is usually the case, nitwit Republicans apparently assumed the CDC was being paranoid and over the past 10 plus years, has worked to cut the CDC’s funding in half during that time: from around 520 million back in 2003 to around 255 million this year.

Hamstringing the CDC so that these clueless Republicans over the years stalled the CDCs ability to find a cure for Ebola, which is now costing people their lives. Because see, what the CDC wanted to do was PREPARE FOR A KNOWN COMING DISASTER, they were not PARANOID.

And the same is true about global warming. When 97% of climate scientists agree that man is driving up the earth’s temperature, wanting to PREPARE FOR THE DANGER THAT THAT WILL BRING TO OUR PLANET, is not PARANOIA, IT’S HAVING THE BRAINS TO PREPARE FOR A KNOWN DANGER!!!

IT’S ONLY TOTAL IDIOTS SUCH AS YOURSELF THAT WOULD DENY REALITY!!!!!!!

          • joe schmo says:

Of course, I’m right….You have gone above and beyond what is normal in ensuring that nothing gets in the way of the Liberal agenda. It’s overemphasized and over exaggerated.

CDC…..Border should have been closed. Flights should have been cancelled. Do you see anywhere else in the world where they just invite all these ebola patients in? Come on over,,,,,,we’ll take care of EVERYONE. Leper or no leper. Let’s cull the herd. We will place you in hospitals all over the U.S. Come on in, we will let you come to this country and provide everything you need. We have plenty of generous Americans who are willing to just hand you money and homes and jobs and free schooling…. Come on in and make America a third world nation. Let’s just bleed the American taxpayer dry. They will be more than happy to give you their jobs. Let’s just sicken the American people. Let’s just ruin America with decadence. Their military is useless because it has been reduced to squat. They can’t fight back. Our next goal is to take away their right to free speech (already happening with Christianity) and their guns. Divide and Conquer. Conquer and Divide.

A poor country can no longer fund issues like Global Warming…All they will care about is how to keep their bellies full when the dollar hits bottom. We can thank Russia and China for their innovative and ruthless thinking. They are all but laughing in our face.

This country will never be the free/respected country that it once was. Too much has changed. Too many special interest groups have taken over. Amercian’s have become lazy. It IS the fall of the Roman empire and you are observing its demise. Like it or not and, just think, you helped contribute and support its collapse.

          • joe schmo says:

I guess then the new death camps and concentration FEMA camps are for the reluctant Conservative aren’t they? Then where does your humanity come into play? It never did and never was. It is all a political ploy….

          • Russell Byrd says:

And my humanity is unquestioned by anyone that is not a liar and a sociopathic liar..

As for a “political ploy,” I fear I normal people would not want to venture into such an evil place as your mind to even find out what that is supposed to mean.

          • TheSkalawag929 says:

          • Russell Byrd says:

Yeah, I don’t know when it originated, but it goes back to the ’30’s or ’40’s. Strangely, why would a “smart” guy choose the name for a doofus. I know he thinks he is smart, but in fact, he did choose a good name for himself.

There are no death camps schmo.

There are no FEMA concentration camps.

As far as fascist, Hitlerite, treasonous, “conservatives” like you, there should be camps. But, alas, we don’t have any.

Nobody is chastising Christianity – if anything, we may be chastising the fake Christianity that many organized religions of today pedal and which the GOP promotes 24/7. But no one is chastising True Christianity!!

          • joe schmo says:

Of course you are. Why don’t you just leave Christians alone to believe the way they always have. I guess the Houston Mayor (a Lesbian) has taken it to the next level. Bad enough that the Supreme Court went against the wishes of some states and made Gay marriage a law. (Like I said I am not against gay marriage, but force it in my face and then I wonder what new form of suppression is next. Oh and that brings me to Houston Mayors next level, seems she is demanding the sermons from certain Houston pastors. Reason being that she wants to see the political content and/or whether or not they are denouncing gays. …..Shame shame shame. Pastors have always talked about the crisis of the day. I believe what is said in church stays in church. It’s their business none of hers. What does she think she is KGB? She’s in a HEAP of trouble. Keep it up you Commy’s. Keep it up…..

          • Independent1 says:

I’m not sure who you’re talking about not leaving Christians alone, the only supposed Christians I rant against are those fake Christians who support the GOP. No one can be a true Christian who supports the activities of Satan; and given how MONEY totally controls everything about the GOP – it is clearly the Devil’s party- so any person who supports the GOP IS NO TRUE CHRISTIAN!!

          • Sand_Cat says:

“Christians” won’t leave the rest of us alone, but expect us to yield to them in all things. I have to say, Joe, I’m surprised a good Nazi like you would have anything to do with that liberal-pinko-commie-pussy-weakling “Jesus,” though I guess Hitler found the church useful, and good Christians faithfully and thoroughly carried out his invasions and mass murders – he could never have done it without them – and helped many of the worst of his friends to escape justice when Germany finally fell. But I guess you worship “Jesus Christ,” not that Communist peasant taker Yeshua.

          • idamag says:

Hitler was a protestant and most of his faithful followers were. In Mein Kampf, Hitler said killing the Jews was God’s work.

And there will be no end to the screaming about oil. Oil is a disease!! It’s like a cancer on the planet; a cancer that sickens millions of people on earth every year with all the pollutants that are emitted by its use.

The screaming won’t stop until Big Oil is eradicated from the planet. Take a few minutes and do a search to see the destruction that Big Oil has inflicted on Nigeria with oil spill after oil spill over the past 4 plus decades. Big Oil has polluted and made uninhabitable, large swaths of Nigeria. And what Big Oil has done to Nigeria they want to inflict on America.

Go on!! Due a search of Nigeria oil disasters!! Go ahead!! Learn something about the cancer after cancer created by Big Oil!!!

          • joe schmo says:

It is? I can recall how dirty the air was in LA when I was a child. You couldn’t go down there without getting a headache or burning eyes. Because of all the emission standards that California has implemented (and yes we pay dearly for it) this is no longer the case. The offshore oil rigs….well they are sopping up the oil that would naturally land on the shoreline and tar your feet. I have seen it seeping out of the ground in the back country and you would call that a disease. Our County has just re-approved the reopening of old oil wells bought by…you guessed it…the Chinese. This approval was passed by a very Liberal group of supervisors in one of Californias most liberal counties. Why, when they are so uber environmental conscience…..Money. Guess this agrarian area just wasn’t making it without the oil…..and what about that ‘natural gas.’ Seems it is the new rage for the future. If you doubt me….look it up:)

We are not Nigeria where I am almost positive the rules and restrictions are simply primitive and not there…..

          • Independent1 says:

Well, you sure had a very wordy cop-out there!! Nothing you said changes THE TRUTH!!

Fossil fuels are a cancer on the planet – and oil is the leading fossil fuel.

          • Sand_Cat says:

Yes, all those improvements were either passed despite hysterical resistance from people like you – after all, air pollution is only a theory and trees cause more of it than anything else – or are critically endangered by people like you, or – most often – BOTH. It’s really amusing to see right-wing jerks bragging about those improvements s f you had anything to do with them.

        • Independent1 says:

And since when did someone make you King of the Planet where you think you have the right to tell people who they can love and marry??? When did that happen??? Did Georgie Boy give up his the kingdom he thought he had when he was president??

Well, you’re no king of the planet so get of your high horse in trying to tell others what they can do with their lives. And if your one of those fake christians from an organized religions, maybe you ought to spend a little time figuring out why Jesus never once mentioned gay relationships being a sin during his years of preaching the gospel, when he had countless opportunities to have addressed it.

        • highpckts says:

Are you serious??? Global warming has been agreed upon by 98% of world scientists! No one is “chastising” Christiamity! If the “Christians” would stop trying to push their beliefs on everyone else, everything would be fine, but being the good Christians they are, they think God only speaks to them!! We are not phobic about Gay rights, which they had none until recently, no thanks to Republicans! We don’t have to stop ANYTHING that treats the citizens as equals under the law.

        • elw says:

Nonsense. You have to win enough elections and the Presidency to get those wishes. Until then you will have to live with what you have, because, whether you think is true or not, elections count and the right to free speech is not limited to ultra-conservatives.

          • joe schmo says:

Hey, just keep going…..,comrad and you will never see this country the same again:)

          • elw says:

All I can say to you is elections count and like it or not the majority rules. Name calling does not change that it only makes you look like a sore loser, You know you can always immigrate if you are so unhappy – that is allowed in this Country.

          • Sand_Cat says:

Hey, just keep going. Clearly you despise government by elected representatives unless your side wins every time.

          • idamag says:

Of course he does. He wasn’t taught to respect Democracy.

          • Sand_Cat says:

          • elw says:

HA, and being the minority in congress means you get everything you want – without comprise.

        • Sand_Cat says:

Why don’t you et over your little tantrums about global warming (initiative?) and your imaginary war on Christianity, though in truth, YOUR war on Christianity I real enough.

          • idamag says:

If that Cretin is an example of Christianity, I wouldn’t want to be a Christian. However, if he really walked through the New Testament, with Christ, he might learn what Christianity really is.

When you listen to Fox news and spew everything they say as the gospel truth then you ARE paranoid! Granted all news stations fight for ratings but some, and you know who they are, are just flat out lying! Your problem is you never take the time to find out what is true and what is not!

ISIS posses no threat to the US homeland, and will have it’s hands full trying to govern people who don’t want them. So what If they form a Caliphate in Syria and Iraq. This has no effect on us. Syria was on a terror list and we had no dealings with them, so why does it matter if the country is torn apart? they are a client state of Putin, not Obama so it is not in our interest to intervene at all there. Biden called it correctly when he stated that Iraq should be divided into 3 separate countries, since the religious factions can’t get along, and sectarian violence is always lurking under the surface. We have to finally get out of these wars. All they do is to drain resources away from homebuilding at home. We have to say to Iran and Saudi Arabia, straighten it out yourselves and get your client actors to stop the wars.
As for Ebola lets talk about relative risk. So far 1 person died of Ebola in this country and at the same time 400,000 plus died from Cancer and 500,000 died from heart disease. So what is the biggest danger to you, Ebola or chronic disease? Get a grip everyone!

    • highpckts says:

      Well said!!

    • elw says:

Good post, but sorry Ebola and ISIS make such good political rhetoric and Ads that I doubt anyone on the right will be getting a grip on any time soon. It took over a decade for people to settle down over AIDS, they will do the same with Ebola as long as it keeps spreading. They are stupid and “stupid is as stupid does (Forrest Gump).”

      • idamag says:

I remember the aids panic. A woman, I worked with, told her teen-age daughter not to even accept a stick of gum from another child as she might get AIDS. I remember a 12-year-old boy got AIDS from a blood transfusion and the school wouldn’t let him come back to school.

        • elw says:

I worked in Public Health in the 1980s as a Public Health Educator. Most of the education I did was for the public and schools but I also got assigned to providing training for police and fire personnel. People were just plain crazy and the misinformation was insane. But at least then we had thousands of cases that were actually spread inside the Country. We have what 5 or 6 cases of Ebola with the only spread to medical staff actually having daily contact with the patients. Even the patients’ families have been released from quarantine. I think we are getting dumber instead of smarter.

At one time the news was an hour long and could be watch or heard a couple times a day and no station expected to make money from delivering it. Now the News has a 24/7 schedule without enough real news to fill its time and big bills to pay for it; the news has become a political, for profit, entertainment enterprise that has nothing to do with facts or useful information. They get people to watch by keeping them on edge and giving them pretty people to look at. Journalism in the media is dead and has been for quite awhile.

        • joe schmo says:

No, it was the upset Liberal media and totalitarian Government under Obama that started the attack because their agenda was contradicted:) What did they think….we would just go along with the program like you fools have. Remember, supposedly this is America. We still have a 1st Amendment right. That is, for now.

          • elw says:

Are you saying that all this has only been happening since Obama came to office, that there was no war on Christmas, or against Christians pre-Obama?

          • highpckts says:

Excuse me but what “war” on Christmas and Christians?? The Christians I know are in name only and the only war on Christmas is in your mind because you don’t like “Happy Holidays”!

  9. ExRadioGuy15 says:

I’m about to make a truthful but controversial link in regards to this problem:
One of the 15 defining characteristics of Fascism is control of the mass media. The GOP adhere to all 15 of the defining characteristics. Now, although the GOP doesn’t have DIRECT control of most of the so-called “Liberal” media, they do have indirect control via the owners and operators of those “Liberal” media outlets, who happen to be GOP sympathizers who order their charges to do one of two things: employ the false equivalency argument or, even worse, to simply ignore the Fascism, corruption, insanity, greed, hypocrisy, bigotry, arrogance, elitism and incompetence of the Republican Party.
Fascist regimes use fear-mongering and paranoia, especially through the media they control, to maintain control of the country. These “Chicken Little” media sources are pretty much doing the bidding of the Fascist Republican Party.
Another “DC” of Fascism is identification of enemies/scapegoats as a unifying cause. The Fascist regime does this mainly to deflect from their own failures or out of frustration for the fact that they don’t have complete control or aren’t getting what they want. The CDC and NIH have correctly criticized the Fascist GOP for their “Starve the Beast” financial philosophy. In the past four years, House Republicans have been successful in cutting the CDC and NIH budgets by nearly a TRILLION dollars combined. But, the GOP is trying to claim that their budget cuts haven’t negatively effected everything they’ve touched when they obviously have. And, in regards to health issues, Texas is one of many “Red” states that oppose the PPACA and do it with such a fervor that they won’t even consider accepting billions of dollars through the Medicaid expansion portion of the PPACA.
Listen up, people: the Republican and Libertarian Parties are this country’s most powerful and dangerous enemies. If you vote for them, you’re suborning their Fascism, corruption, greed, hypocrisy, bigotry, elitism, arrogance, insanity and incompetence.

    • idamag says:

      excellent description of fascism.

      • joe schmo says:

        You don’t know squat!

        • Independent1 says:

Fortunately we consider the source when you make those comments, and being a bone fide idiot, you’re saying those kinds of things means absolutely NOTHING!!!

          • joe schmo says:

To you they don’t. Doesn’t mean I’m right or wrong. But as I have seen on this site. Nothing said here has changed my opinion. If anything it has only enhanced my belief because some of the articles written and introduced are pure political propaganda.

          • highpckts says:

Oh that’s really good!! If anyone should know pure political propaganda it’s you!!

        • highpckts says:

No, I would say it’s you that doesn’t know “squat”!!!

          • joe schmo says:

Why don’t you explain Fascism to me? I have studied Communism, Fascism, Capitalism and know people who have lived through all of them. True Capitalism is the best. The other two are suppressive pieces of shit. I tend to believe people who have lived through Communism and Fascism:) Books never tell you the whole story with the exception of biographies like “The Diary of Anne Frank.” But even then the truth can be stretched……

          • highpckts says:

Here you go! I did the leg work for ya!

“Communist and fascist movements had opposing ideologies but both ended up being repressive political systems based on the control of a single leader. While communism is based loosely around a theory of economic equality, fascism is based around the glory of the state and strength displayed through violence and conquest.”
Sounds like the Republican party fits right in when it comes to Fascism!

          • joe schmo says:

Why don’t you tell me where the violence and conquest are?

I notice you didn’t say all that much about Communism. Most likely it is because you found a lot of truth in what you yourself believes about what I stated.

“Communism is a socioeconomic system structured upon common
ownership of the means of production and characterized by the absence of
social classes, money, and the state; as well as a social, political
and economic ideology and movement that aims to establish this social
            order.”

In a perfect world, everyone would have food
and shelter, and a true utopian society would be devoid of sexism,
racism and other forms of oppression. But for most of the world’s
population, this perfect society just isn’t possible. Communism is one proposed solution to these problems.

“Most people know what communism is at its most basic level. Simply put,
communism is the idea that everyone in a given society receives equal
shares of the benefits derived from labor. Communism is designed to
allow the poor to rise up and attain financial and social status equal
to that of the middle-class landowners. In order for everyone to achieve
equality, wealth is redistributed so that the members of the upper
class are brought down to the same financial and social level as the
middle class. Communism also requires that all means of production be
controlled by the state. In other words, no one can own his or her own
business or produce his or her own goods because the state owns
            everything.”

            http://people.howstuffworks.com/communism.htm

God, does this sound like you or what?

          • highpckts says:

Actually, more like you! VOTER SUPPRESSION. NO MINIMUM WAGE INCREASE, TAKING CHOICES AWAY FROM WOMEN, UNION BUSTING, ETC.!!!

          • Sand_Cat says:

You obviously didn’t check very carefully, or – more likely – you checked Fox Noise.

          • idamag says:

            Especially, the tea party.

          • Sand_Cat says:

Obviously, all the “study” was wasted on you. You tend to believe lunatic right-wingers like yourself, and your answer to the threat of “Communism,” i.e., mild and timid centrism, is to advocate for a Fascist-like dictatorship to make sure no one strays to the left of Barry Goldwater. Actually, I shouldn’t dishonor Goldwater, a courageous and honorable man, by even mentioning him in a post to a pathetic hack like you.

    • joe schmo says:

One of the 15 defining characteristics of Communism is control of the media through propaganda.

Conservatives much to your recourse DOES NOT have control of the “Liberal: media. The liberals have owned the people for decades.

“MSNBC 24-hour cable and Internet news service (co-owned by NBC and Microsoft)”….And who owns Microsoft?

ABC is owned by Disney. A very Liberal think tank.

CBS is a subsidiary of Viacom which is owned by National Amusements which is owned by Sumner Redstone Rothstein – a Liberal.

I won’t go into Fox because the owner is most certainly Conservative.

CNN – Turner Broadcasting (Ted Turner is a semi Conservative). Jeff Zucker is now the CEO and he is most certainly a Liberal. CNN is noted to be more middle of the road.

Wow, lot’s of words that really do not describe Fascism…..and your media does not use scare tactics….LOL Global warming…oops, I mean Climate Change, Gay Rights, Gun Control etc…..

You are not including the 15 points verbatim that state what Fascism is or does. There is nothing to what you say without research which I’m assuming you are too lazy to do. You are just spewing words out of your ass. As usual you only complain and have no solutions for the problems we now face.

Conservatives do not have the power that you incite. Fascism is a despicable regime as is Communism. However, Fascism looked after the Middle Class, business and took care of farmers. Communism just spreads the wealth and leaves everyone poor. Of the two Communism fits the Liberal agenda whereas Fascism which you don’t know a stitch about has nothing to do with Conservative ideology.

Next time do some research….before you panic and fly off the handle.

      • Independent1 says:

Wrong!! No country on the planet has every governed under true Communism. What you’re describing are DICTATORSHIPS!!!pretending to be communism

        • joe schmo says:

That’s because Marxs’ utopian ideology didn’t work out the way he thought it would. It always ends up with some controlling faction. This is what is happening now and your political regime has the podium. YES THIS IS BECOMING A DICTATORSHIP ONLY IT HASN’T HIT YOU YET. Conservatives see the writing on the wall, you are just the sheeple who see things going your way. Just wait until the tables are turned and the GOVERNMENT STARTS TO TAKE AWAY SOME OF YOUR RIGHTS. Then will you finally wake up?

        • Sand_Cat says:

Don’t argue with this idiot about Communism; he’ nothing but a frustrated Bircher who calls everything he doesn’t understand or agree with “Communism.” Why waste your time.

          • joe schmo says:

Huh, why don’t you give me the definition. You never have and you don’t know. So give it up, head in the Sand.

          • Independent1 says:

Here’s the definition of True Communism:

“A theoretical economic system characterized by the collective ownership of property and by the organization of labor for the common advantage of all members.”

And here’s the perfect example of Communism as documented in Acts 4 of the Bible (the way God, through the Holy Spirit, had the original Christians living):

31 And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.

32 And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common.

33 And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all.

34 Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold,

35 And laid them down at the apostles’ feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need.

36 And Joses, who by the apostles was surnamed Barnabas, (which is, being interpreted, The son of consolation,) a Levite, and of the country of Cyprus,

37 Having land, sold it, and brought the money, and laid it at the apostles’ feet.

          • Sand_Cat says:

Why should I bother? Your invincible willful ignorance is immune to facts.

        • idamag says:

You are absolutely correct. Everywhere that Communism has been tried, it has failed. His parents come to this country and do not teach their children to respect Democracy. They turned against the hand that was feeding them.

      • highpckts says:

So climate change (real), Gay rights ( real) and gun control (real) are just fear mongering tactics? You are pathetic!!

        • joe schmo says:

          CLIMATE CHANGE:
          1) http://www.climatechangedispatch.com/
          2) http://nypost.com/2014/09/14/leo-v-science-vanishing-evidence-for-climate-change/

DiCaprio is an actor, not a scientist; it’s no real surprise that his film is sensationalistic and error-riddled. Other climate-change fantasists, who do have a scientific background, have far less excuse.

Science is never settled, but the current state of “climate change” science is quite clear: There is essentially zero evidence that carbon dioxide from human activities is causing catastrophic climate change.

Yes, the “executive summary” of reports from the UN’s International Panel on Climate Change continues to sound the alarm — but the summary is written by the politicians. The scientific bulk of the report, while still tinged with improper advocacy, has all but thrown in the towel.

And the Nongovernmental International Panel on Climate Change lists thousands of scientific papers that either debunk or cast serious doubt on the supposed “consensus” model.

          3)http://www.globalclimatescam.com/2014/10/more-bad-news-for-the-global-warming-alarmists/

          GUN CONTROL
Banning ordinary citizens from owning guns will not solve the problem.

Citizens aren’t legally allowed to possess marijuana in most states, and look how well that’s going. Prohibition didn’t work either.

If Morgan’s idea of gun control — that guns belong “on a military battlefield … not in the hands of civilians” — comes to fruition, most law-abiding citizens wouldn’t cooperate anyway. There has already been strong resistance and outright refusal to comply with Connecticut’s law requiring registration of certain assault weapons.

But let’s say, hypothetically speaking, that peaceful gun owners surrendered their weapons, which is what gun control advocates like Morgan dreams about. Would the U.S. suddenly be a utopian society where no innocent lives are taken before their time?

In fact, it would be much different than that. Law-abiding gun owners would no longer have guns, but criminals would still have them. People still made moonshine in their basements during the prohibition era, after all.

I think most of us are aware that DiCaprio is an actor. Maybe you should learn the difference between science and partisan wishfull thinking.

          • TheSkalawag929 says:

He knows but discards it as Liberal bias.
You know. Contrary to his daily conservative enema or brain injection.

          • joe schmo says:

You need to stop being a suppository for Obama. Maybe if you get your head out of his behind, you might see some light or maybe just like the dark the light will blind your eyes. In one ear and out the other.

          • TheSkalawag929 says:

Yawn… Your proclivity toward the mundane is boring and un-enlightening. schmo.

      • latebloomingrandma says:

Wow! Who knew that Disney was a think tank?

        • joe schmo says:

Liberally run:) It’s Hollywood, remember. I work in film…..I should know……

          • Sand_Cat says:

Oh, so now you work in film? I though you were an expert on “Communism.”

          • TheSkalawag929 says:

You’re looking at reality through a conservative prism as described by joe schmo. In other words distorted.

          • joe schmo says:

Well, you look at the world through a ‘fish eye’ lens. Singularly concave and misaligned.

          • TheSkalawag929 says:

Sometimes a fish eye lens provides better more realistic view of the world. But you wouldn’t understand that with your myopic view of the world.

          • joe schmo says:

Not really because it is quite misconstrued . It gives the viewer a distorted field of view.

          • TheSkalawag929 says:

            So says you. Mr. Myopia.

          • joe schmo says:

Yes, that great propaganda machine….the film industry.

I was raised with the notion of what Communism is. Bet you weren’t……

          • idamag says:

His parents were. Right after WWII ended, the Russians were pretty unhappy with the fascists for attacking them and killing whole villages in Western Russia. They were hunting down nazies and Nazi collaborators. In Russian occupied Germany, the Russians weren’t too cuddly with the former nazies.

          • elw says:

Yes we all know that people in the film industry and in Hollywood stuff their bodies with drugs that burn out their brains.

        • TheSkalawag929 says:

Only a schmo would believe such a thing.
Just because he works in film, doing what Lord only knows, doesn’t put him in the know.
Much like his statement about DiCaprio being an actor and not a scientist.

          • joe schmo says:

LOL….more intelligent work than you most likely know how to do…..In case you haven’t noticed, film is extremely technical nowadays. Why don’t you give me a rundown on how the back end of a CG movie is made. My Master’s has served me in more ways than you can imagine.

            Knowledge is power:)

          • TheSkalawag929 says:

” Knowledge is power” Why don’t you try exhibiting some.

          • joe schmo says:

Well, right along with ‘head in the sand,’ you haven’t exactly portrayed any as far as I can see.

          • TheSkalawag929 says:

Well obviously you can’t see very far.

          • joe schmo says:

This comment makes no sense…… Just like I stated before.

          • TheSkalawag929 says:

That’s because it is beyond your limited mental capabilities.

          • Sand_Cat says:

Maybe you should do a little less LOLing and more thinking; it might reduce the number of people LOLing at your ignorance.

          • TheSkalawag929 says:

The lack of functioning brain cell make that solution prohibitive.

          • joe schmo says:

            Cat got your tongue….sourpuss.

          • Sand_Cat says:

            Another substantial answer.

          • highpckts says:

Knowledge is power? Not in your case! It seems to have made you very arrogant and very much a know it all!!

          • joe schmo says:

That’s because the more education you have the more you are aware about what is going on around you. You think more and become easily skeptical. You question authority. So let’s keep the masses stupid and let them be pennants of a larger suppressing government shall we? Frankly, unlike you, I refuse to be that gullible.

          • highpckts says:

Suppressive government?? Exactly how have you been suppressed?? My guess is your life hasn’t changed one iota!

          • elw says:

You work in film all you need is talent, talent does not always include education. You do not speak like an educated man nor do your ideas match someone who is really aware about what is going on around him.

          • idamag says:

His work in “film” is probably a lying, hate, John Birch Society propaganda film..

          • elw says:

Or a dream on his part. You know like his belief of himself as an educated, aware person.

          • idamag says:

I would put the “educated” and “aware” in quotation marks. I know quite a few educated people and he certainly doesn’t sound like they do.

          • elw says:

He is quite a cartoon character, that is for sure.

          • idamag says:

He wasn’t taught to respect Democracy by his parents who were probably fascists escaping the Russians.

          • elw says:

Knowning film technology does not make you an expert in any other field or necessarily intelligent. My 10 year old grandson is a technology genius who still believes in the buggy man – just like you do.

      • Sand_Cat says:

Why keep advertising that you know nothing about “Communism.” The fact that you could compare today’s emasculated remnant of liberalism and the timid center-right majority of the Democratic Party “Communists” shows only that you yourself are dangerously far out in he territory of Fascism and delusion

        • joe schmo says:

How many times do I have to tell you ‘head in the Sand’ that my Father escaped communism and he says this country is looking eerily familiar to what he left. How the HELL does that make me delusional. It only makes you look stupid.

          • Sand_Cat says:

            Only to you.
Your own positions are eerily like those of the Nazis, despite your “Constitutionalist” claims, and you clearly believe in elections only when your side wins. And most countries that became Communist by means other than invasion did so via the overthrow of vicious right-wing dictatorships a lot like what you seem to have in mind for this country, not by having a reasonable safety net and regulating business and the powerful to protect the weak.
You’re just full of very nasty crap through and through on practically every issue and especially in your claims about Communism.

        • idamag says:

His father escaped the Russians who were punishing Nazis and Nazi sympathizers. Then, not being a real fan of Democracy, they taught their children to hate their government.

          • Sand_Cat says:

I’ve asked twice now if his family had to lie to the INS about what they did during World War 2 to get into the country. No reply.
But in fairness, our good friends in the OSS/CIA helped a lot of unrepentant Nazis come with full knowledge of who and what they were.

          • idamag says:

Our paper, this morning said there are about 2000 Nazis living in this country that escaped East Germany because the Russians weren’t too happy with them. There is a group that are trying to prevent them from getting Social Security. I bet Joe’s parents weren’t afraid of having their hands out for SS while they dissed our Democracy. There was a post-WWI song that went: “If you don’t like your Uncle Sammy, if you don’t like the Red, White, and Blue, go back to where you came, whatever be its name, don’t bite the hand that’s feeding you.” I think that cretin should find another country and move there. Unfortunately, there aren’t any Nazi countries left. The Russians were so harsh because the Nazis came into Russian murdered whole villages. At the siege of St. Petersburg, several thousand people starved and froze to death.

I never watched Fox(self-explanatory), have stopped watching CNN ( to incompetent) and CNBC is a little mixed up at times. Aljaseera is the most balances and truthful, tells it as it should but in general I no longer watch cable news, frankly they suck. All of them, they have hidden agendas or just flat out lie like Fox. They are not news, they are extension of the political party they support. So I refuse to waste my time watching any of these so call news shows, they are shows but are not news.
