No Denial: ‘Son Of Detroit’ Profited From Bailout — And Jobs Shipped To China

“I’m a son of Detroit. I was born in Detroit. My dad was head of a car company. I like American cars,” said Mitt Romney on Monday night when he met with President Obama to discuss foreign policy. “And I would do nothing to hurt the U.S. auto industry.”

That might be considered true—unless moving the most important American auto parts manufacturer to China counts as hurting the U.S. auto industry. But those words now stand as one of Romney’s most glaring falsehoods in the final debate.

Romney’s defensive statement came in response to a remark by Obama noting that the Republican nominee is “familiar with jobs being shipped overseas because you invested in companies that were shipping jobs overseas.” Moments later, he added: “If we had taken your advice, Governor Romne,y about our auto industry, we’d be buying cars from China instead of selling cars to China.”

Most viewers had little idea what Obama was talking about or why Romney felt the need to rebut him so specifically. But their coded exchange almost certainly referred to an investigative report that broke wide on the Internet, without much attention from the mainstream media so far—Greg Palast’s article in The Nation magazine, exposing Romney’s huge profits from Delphi, a crucial auto parts company that moved nearly all of its jobs to China after taking billions in auto bailout money from the Treasury.

As Palast reported, the Romneys made millions from that intricate deal, put together by one of his main campaign donors, billionaire investor Paul Singer — through a “vulture fund” known as Elliott Management. Having bought up Delphi at fire-sale prices, Singer and his partners essentially blackmailed the Treasury into paying them billions so that Delphi would keep supplying parts to General Motors and Chrysler. They stiffed the company’s pensioners, pocketed the bailout funds, and moved all but four of the firm’s 29 plants to China.

The neglect of the Delphi story by mainstream and even progressive outlets such as MSNBC has been remarkable, particularly because neither Romney nor his campaign has denied it. If anything, a statement issued by the campaign to The Hill, a Washington publication, seemed to confirm Palast’s reporting by attempting to deflect blame onto the Obama administration:

Romney’s campaign did not deny that he profited from the auto bailout in an email to The Hill Wednesday afternoon, but it said the the report showed the Detroit intervention was “misguided.”

“The report states that Delphi had 29 US plants before the misguided Obama auto bailout, and just four after. Is this really what the president views as success?” Romney spokeswoman Michele Davis said.

“Mitt Romney would have taken a different path to turning around the auto industry,” Davis continued. “As President, Mitt Romney will create jobs and give American workers the recovery they deserve.”

Taking Delphi bankrupt under the management of Singer and Romney’s other partners didn’t create jobs or security for Delphi’s American workers. After taking nearly $13 billion in bailout financing from the Treasury — with the support of Rep. Paul Ryan, who has also received generous support from Singer — the new Delphi management abrogated the company’s pensions, closed all those U.S. plants, and moved production to China. And so far, Romney has escaped any questions about why he and Ann Romney invested their millions with vulture investors who used taxpayer funds to destroy American jobs.

Yes, he is the son of the CEO of a car company who lived a privileged life, at least in part, thanks to the sweat of tens of thousands of auto workers, the same ones he despectively dismissed when he acknowledged that 47% of Americans are not his concern. If Romney had been president and GM and Chrysler had been forced to file for bankruptcy there is a very good chance those companies would have faced the same fate our steel industry, Penn Central and much of our manufacturing did. Tens of thousands of American workers associated with the auto industry owe their employment to President Obama’s decision to put country ahead of politics. Sadly, he is paying a heavy price at the polls for having the audacity of championing causes that help the middle class at the expense of the wealthy accumulating more wealth.
Incredibly, many of those who benefit the most from his policies are the ones who have been convinced that supporting the man that stood up for our rights, preserving and strengthening the social programs we benefit from, and iovercoming the effects of the disastrous Republican policies that caused so much pain and anxiety to the middle class is our enemy and must be replaced. This election is not only about the qualification of the candidates, their agenda and vision, but about honesty and loyalty. President Obama pursued policies that were quickly demonized by an elite determined to maintain the status quo at the expense of the middle class and the poor, his determination to eliminate injustices, such as the pre-existing condition and health insurance caps, did not change as a result of the barrage of negative advertising sponsored by those whose financial interests were being challenged. President Obama remained true to his convictions in spite of all the negativism and obstructionism he faced, and it is incumbent on us, the people who benefitted the most from the values he embraces to support him and help him achieve his dream of a better America by giving him four more years.
The last 3.5 years were spent correcting the damage done by Republican policies and an inept and corrupt administration, the next four will be spent ensuring our economy is as strong as ever, full employment is restored, our standard of living becomes once again the envy of the world, our country remains safe from foreign terrorist attacks, and our dreams and aspirations exceed our wildest dreams.

At least your son finished the job. Coworkers of mine hired a contractor to add a family room to their house, paid him the mandatory 50% down and now have a house that is missing a living room wall but have gained liens on their house from various subcontractors who had not been paid for their work by the contractor. They have discovered 5 other families who have been ripped off in much the same way and that contractor is still in business evidently completely immune from liability because he has changed the name of his company.

Very true, BDD1951, and it is illegal but it is really easy to beat it if you incorporate your company. After you have ripped off a number of people you strip all the assets from the company and form a new company. People can only sue the company that did the work and if it is just a shell they can’t collect anything. I learned about this back in the 50s in Alaska when a friend of mine was bragging that for the first time in 10 years they had gotten a company to come back and make good on a group of houses they had built and a subcontractor had failed to insulate the ceilings (not a good thing when it is over 30 below). Every time that major flaws had popped up previously he had ended up going after an empty shell but this time the prime contractor was a huge company that was just too massive to pull the normal defense shenanigan.

I think it was 4 times. There are people that I work with who LOVE the Apprentice – a show I will never waste my time on – and had no idea he claimed bankruptcy. One other point about your reference to Romney being the son of an auto executive: I grew up in Michigan during the years George Romney was governor, and Mitt Romney is not 1/1000th the man that his father was. George Romney was a rich man with a common touch – an auto executive who was welcome at any time on the shop floor, who respected, befriended, and won the votes of thousands of UAW members, a Republican who was a friend to the Civil Rights Movement,
a man who abandoned his party on principle in 1964 over the extremism of Goldwater and his platform. I am thankful for George Romney that he did not live to see the morally and politically (though certainly not financially) bankrupt campaign that his son has been running.

This story deserves front page coverage! The Romneys made a minimum of 15 million on the Delphi bankrupcy while while whinning about the goverment bailout. Paul Singer through Eliot Management closed most of the Delphi plants in the USA and moved them to China, while Romney blamed Obama for the jobs lost. The new Deplphi headquarters is located on the island of Jersey off the coat of France, another tax haven for the rich. Romney got major campaign donations from Singer and his friends. Birds of a feather stick together.
It is also interesting the Eliot Management has been outlawed from doing business in most countries around the world except the USA for their scheme to steal funds dedicate to fight Maleria in east Africa.

Granted we still have a ways to go to get our nation in order for everyone

They managed to convince the electorate that the economic and fiscal malaise we are finally overcoming started 3.5 years ago, that what took place when Bush was in office either did not happen or it is something inconsequential irrelevant to the problems we endured, they convinced seniors that efforts to save MEDICARE from the effects of Bush’s 2003 MEDICARE Part D reform are actually designed to destroy the program, and that the people who promised to dismantle it are its saviors. They convinced people who should know better that the U.S. dollar is going to be devalued, that our economy will collapse, that foreclosures and bankruptcies are still the order of the day, and that things have gotten worse instead of better. The fact that unemployment is going down, the companies are profiting and hiring, that the stock market is at record levels, the foreclosures have been replaced with increased house sales and real estate prices going up again, that cruises are booked to capacity and the lines at Disney are huge, that we have to wait in line to get a table at popular restaurants seems to be irrelevant to those who form opinions based on prejudice or a well crafted political ad.

GM was on the verge of going out of business and there was no other way of funding it (Banks were broke and were not lending money, so GM couldn’t have got it from Banks). Obama showed courage standing for the Middle Class and the 47% whom Romney said he does care about. Romney on the other hand showed weekness as he abondand his positions one after another to win the votes, he now supported the bailout of Detroit, two days before the Monday debate he was against, but now he says it should have done differently…Delphi is another example of the grand thift of the taxpayers by so called successful businessmen.. and that is why they refuse to pay their fair share in taxes.
Romney turnaround indicates that he is morally bunkrupt, as he attacks Obama day-in-day-out, and then say to Obama “Attacking me is not a good policy”. Mr. Romney, what is your policy, other than fleecing America?
The econmoy improved inspite of GOP obstructionism and plotting against Obama, who sustained the worst attack on his patriotism, integrity and character, meanwhile they are feeding racism and divisiveness. Election of Romney means a retrack of the social progress and a derailment of econmic recovery as a result from his so called plan. Romney is still speaking trickle down economy that failed since 1980 to produce any real recovery or economic sense.

At the time of the auto bailouts Ford requested a $9 billion line-of-credit from the government, and a $5 billion loan from the Energy Department. Maybe we should have learned something from that. Isn’t this the second time Chrysler has been bailed out by the tax payers and didn’t the management of GM, at the time, state this was a bad idea and that tax dollars shouldn’t be used to bail out a private company. “Where should the Government draw the line?” GM Chairman Thomas A. Murphy has attacked federal help for Chrysler as “a basic challenge to the philosophy of America.” In 1979 this was the debate as stated by Time Magazine “The congressional debate will resurrect all the arguments for and against giving federal aid to any company. There is a strong case that such help rewards failure and penalizes success, puts a dull edge on competition, is unfair to an ailing company’s competitors and their shareholders, and inexorably leads the Government deeper into private business. Why should a huge company be bailed out, say critics, while thousands of smaller firms suffer bankruptcy every year? Where should the Government draw the line?” Yep I wonder how long it will be before the taxpayer is bailing out GM again.
