Putin thinks he is the reincarnation of Peter the Great….
eter the Great was a Russian czar in the late 17th century who is best known for his extensive reforms in an attempt to establish Russia as a great nation. He created a strong navy, reorganized his army according to Western standards, secularized schools, administered greater control over the reactionary Orthodox Church, and introduced new administrative and territorial divisions of the country
Considering the way he treats his enemies, he is more like Ivan III – the first person to declare himself “Tsar of All Russias”. We Westerners know Ivan more by his not so nice sobriquet – Ivan the Terrible!
He also patterns his actions after his other great idol, Iosif Vissarionovich Dzhugashvili – known to the West as Joseph Stalin. He now even has his own special place to exile his enemies – Sochi!
Danziger’s text in this cartoon is a plagiarism from, of all people, Hermann Goering, who first said, When I hear about democracy, I reach for my pistol.
That is not plagiarism, that is simply “updating” a well-known phrase from the past. A subtle way of showing how history repeats itself.
