Yes, America is now fully enmeshed in “Stupid Watergate II” — and John Oliver is on the case. In the latest episode of Last Week Tonight, Oliver explains the wincing stupidity of Trump’s Ukraine gambit against the Bidens, from the presidential confession on the White House driveway to the humiliating Twitter rebuke by Nickelback. And those incriminating ambassadorial texts get the special Oliver treatment, of course.

How could it get worse? Maybe Trump will confess another crime. Oliver has an idea about that too.

Most of us are old enough to remember when Republicans eager to court the evangelical Christian vote would recoil in (not entirely genuine) horror at any hint of antisemitism in any political candidate, particularly on a GOP slate. But for the new post-insurrection Trumpian Republican Party, it seems not only to be no problem, it's practically an asset.
