WASHINGTON — Can a Republican primary in Indiana have even the remotest connection to a presidential election in France? Richard Mourdock, the tea party giant-killer who defeated Sen. Richard Lugar on Tuesday, clearly thinks so.

“Just yesterday, France elected a socialist,” Mourdock declared in his victory speech. “There are those I’m sure in the administration and in the left side of the Democratic Party that were cheering for that. But we’re not going to stand for that in Indiana because the supporters of Barack Obama are not going to win!”

Don’t scoff. There is a point behind what Mourdock said. It’s just not the point he had in mind.

Mourdock’s success is decisive proof, if any more was needed, that the Republican Party has lurched far to the right of where it once was. Lugar was regularly described in the course of his re-election campaign as a “moderate.” But he is not a moderate, and never has been. He is a conservative who happens to be civil. Lugar earned a lifetime rating of 77 percent from the American Conservative Union. If being more than three-quarters to the right puts you in the “middle” of the political spectrum, it’s a very skewed measure.

Being a good tea party Republican, Mourdock is all about slashing government spending without regard to the impact of the cuts on the economy or on those who need government help. He cast his campaign as a battle against “the nightmare of ever-growing government” that would turn the United States into a “Western European-style nation.”

This gets us to the irony: Right now, it’s conservatives who want to follow the Western European path of austerity that voters in France and Greece rejected last weekend. The Obama administration, by contrast, has chosen a distinctly American path that kept austerity at bay. As a result, the American economy has climbed out of the Great Recession more quickly than most of Europe. Had Obama accepted the right wing’s assertions that cutting government is the one and only route to prosperity, we would have gone the way of Britain, which is slipping toward recession again.

In fact, the “socialist” Obama has presided over an economy in which private employment has risen by 4.2 million jobs during the recovery even as governments at all levels have cut public payrolls by some 600,000 since the beginning of 2009. If shrinking government is the political right’s goal, this puts Obama to the right of both Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush. The United States should have been even more aggressive in pump priming the economy — and Obama would have been if conservatives and some moderates had not been so resistant.

  • ykhalim

If Democrats undermined, subverted, & sabotaged the economy like Republicans do, they would be called traitors, domestic terrorists, etc. Republicans in the US House and Senate routinely undermine, subvert, and sabotage the vital national economic interests of the country. Tea Party members are especially guilty of this.

    • ChristoD

Democrats, especially the President, ARE being called all those things and lots worse by a MAJORITY of the right so it is not just the fringe. If the dialogue on the far right isn’t muted or at least tempered via some moderate Republican leadership, we are in for some serious shit.

    • Jeannie69

      HAHAHAHA under a rock

  • Ed

On the day OB was inaugerated the repubs pledged themselves to making sure he failed at getting oit of the hole we were in.

    • right. It doesn’t seem right that winning/defeating is more important than the health of the country.

    • ObozoMustGo

In hindsight, Ed… do you honestly think that it would have been rational for the opposition party in Germany in the early 1930’s to want Adolph Hitler to fail? Of course it would. It would have been rational for them to do everything they could to get him out of office.

I’m not saying Obozo is Hitler by any means. Dont interpret the analogy that way. What I am saying is that sometimes, it’s a fully acceptable and worthy ideal to want a politician to fail in his efforts to “fundamentally transform America”. I want him to fail also and by my name, you can tell I want him gone. BIG TIME! Obozo is a disaster of tremendous proportion for America. He should go to the UN and try to be king of the world there. But get the hell out of the White House!

      Have a nice day!

  • ChristoD

WTF is wrong with so many American voters that support the Republican cause. I can undrstand the die hard Republicans support but everyone else should SEE what is happening. They HAVE to see what is going on and yet despite the obvious Republican plan to work against their best interests, they support a cause that is so scary as to fairly project a recession if not a depression. I am shocked that the Presidential race seems to even be a race let alone it being ‘close’ in the polls. Wake up America, LOOK at what is happening. The right is driving their ideology to the point that they are prepared to destroy the country in order to save it.

    • patuxant

You have it spot on ChristoD. If we look at the underbelly of this beast we find fear and fanaticism due to the fact that our President is Black. I honestly believe that no other reason would make sense of turning otherwise intelligent thinking people into raving lunatics, the likes of Ted Nugent, and imbiciles, the likes of Palin. “Freedom” for these people is a sham as they use it to promote their own agenda…hatred and bigotry.

      • ChristoD

You are referring to the Republican ‘base’ I assume ? I do not share your view on his ‘blackness’ as the major issue. Of course there are many who you are right about but, I believe the core issues revolve around his so called ‘socialist’ policies, especially the Health Care Program, and the economy. This election appears to be so close that it may very well be the unemployed who have a ‘change is in order to see if the other side can do any better’ attitude that will make the ultimate difference. Many of them have not connected the dots on this. They seem to convieniently forget that it is the policies of Bush and his major push to drive the country in a pure conservative ideology direction that got us in this mess in the first place. They seem to want to reward the Republicans for obstructing government to the point of paralysis. To his credit Bush was astute enough to recognize that what he had done was wrong and he needed to get us back to the middle with his policies near the end of his second term only to have the Tea Party try and drive us back down the rat hole that HE saw us slipping into.

        • SaneJane

I think it is a major issue, just not the only issue. I live in Alabama and may be exposed to a different culture than you but the hate here is palpable. The hatred includes the poor along with blacks and Hispanics. The Republican Party is operating from fear of being outnumbered by non-white voters. In addition to our infamous anti- immigration law which was designed to limit Hispanic votes, we also have new ID laws aimed at discourage voting by black, elderly and poor citizens. The sponsor of Alabama’s anti-immigrant bill was recorded plotting to discourage black voters from going to the polls. The Republican Party is bringing back Jim Crow and doing their dead level best to eliminate social programs. They know what they are doing and tragically many voters align with them because they approve of the hatred. These voters do not believe it extends to them also.

          • joyscarbo

Sane Jane, I hear you!!! Racism in the republican party is disgustingly evident!!
My husband of 2o years is from a very rural Alabama town and black. His family lived a hard life and fought against racism and institutionalized poverty.
My elderly mother-in-law actually tried to vote for both McCain and Obama in 2008 because she feared retaliation. She had to be told that it was okay to vote for whoever she wanted.
In 1982 when my husband was a high school senior, he gave a white girl a ride home in the rain and got shot at by her father for his trouble.
My husband has 3 adult nieces who live and work in his hometown. They each work 2 jobs and still can’t make enough money to afford anything but government subsidized housing in “the projects.” You see, their primary employer- a white man- also manages “the projects.” He makes sure these young women don’t make enough income to afford anything but a run down, poorly kept project apartment. He pays them with one hand and then takes it right back with the other.
The south has to face that progess is something you go along with because there’s a civil rights movement. Progress is not static. Progress demands contiual movement, reassessment and growth. Republicans want to bomb our country with narrow minded, separatist idiology and policies that puts our entire county’s progress back to Jim Crow levels. It just excludes more and more groups- blacks, hispanics, gay people, women, the poor, elderly, the disabled, women and children. Every one of these groups are in the sights of republican wingnuts and slated for extermination. They will not stop until they have absolute power…and remember…absolute power corrupts absolutely.

          • Miccala

I agree with the 2 previous posts. I live in Indiana..the tea party did the damage here and it’s unbelievable. Sen. Lugar has been around since I was a kid. Although he is Republican, very fair man. The idiot that is replacing him..showed up on “Fox” saying “no compromise” and other idiotic talking points. RACISM is hot and heavy in Indiana..I get so tired of all the people on TV saying it is not because “Pres. Obama” is black. OH YES IT IS, at least here. I know, unfortunately my sister is married to one.

          • Safronia11

It would benefit people to understand the history of this Country regarding racism. Americans can’t seem to grasp anything they don’t personally experience..up close & personal. To see anything from another’s point of view is next to impossible for most people. But all of them more than ready to spout their ignorance. The Republicans are soooooo
racist they don’t even know it. They are so terrified of Obama they have no control over hatred. Yet they will deny that racism while going into a rage because they realize they have been caught in it. It is embarrassing to be outed a stupid, after all..

        • Jeannie69

          ChristoD

You need to read what Thomas Sowell things of our President and he is a black gentleman and very smart. Please read about him.

          • ChristoD

I have read many of his articles. I find him to be very, very conservative, he has never found anything to the left of Atilla the Hun acceptable to him and much of his diatribe is very offensive. There is not an objective bone in his body. Black or otherwise, he is an extreme thionker and as Dwiight Eisenhauer wrote ‘extremes on both sides of the poltical divide are unproductive, moderation is the avenue to pursue’.

        • Safronia11

So called Obamacare is the best thing that could happen to our health care “Industry.” Every other industrialized country takes care of its own citizens. There doctors, hospitals, medical care is as good, some places, better than ours. If the Right wasn’t so hellbent on stopping everything Obama suggests…with the “death panel” etc lies. If they weren’t so determined to keep the insurance companies rolling in profits…this could have been handled last year. To the benefit of all.
Saying that government would be making medical decisions is so wrong….it is the insurance companies who make the medical decisions. Based on saving money for themselves. The doctors & patients have to get authorization for anything from the insurance companies. Medicare/Medicaid have worked well for years…by the government.

          • ChristoD

Spot on Safronia11, SPOT ON !

          • Jeannie69

Where have you been hiding under a rock.

          • Obama care did not go far enough, universal health care is the only true way to control cost’s and take the profit out of the current corrupt system. Any country that does not look out for all of it’s citizens is morally bankrupt. Not every facet of our corporate system has to be for profit does it ? A healthy nation is a strong nation.

    • workformore

We are first and FOREMOST AMERICANS, not Democrat or Republican. We are going down quickly and we have to decide before this election if we are going to be a SOCIALIST nation or a FREE nation. We are past being about political party lines. We have to ask is Obama FOR our way of government or is he turning us into a bankrupt society with promises of government taking over what we eat to how we are cared for when ill. I want to be free, as our for fathers designed , who put their lives on the line for our independence from an overly -controlling government . I want to be able to work . I want my children and grandchildren to have a good life. At this rate we are leaving so much debt that they will have no hope of FREEDOM, only working to support the machine of poverty being created. STOP THINKING ABOUT PARTY LINES AND THINK ABOUT WHO CAN TAKE US BACK TO INDEPENDENCE (not dependence). Obama proves everyday that he can speak well but knows nothing of what he speaks about…..no substance, but I supported him in the beginning. Please go at this with an open mind. We have no perfect party, no perfect system but we are failing quickly in every area….schools, work opportunities, growth, debt, bureaucracy, people who only want to receive not give. We have to turn things around quickly or mark my words, we will lose the freedom to even have this conversation. I WANT TO BE FREE!!!

      • ChristoD

I agree with your first comments about being Americans first and foremost but your second opinion about being SOCIALIST is so far off the mark that it is astonishing. If the implication that the new Health Care law makes us SOCIALIST, you could not be further from the truth. I assume that is your case of stating we are becoming SOCIALIST since that is the only legislation that was passed that in anyway reflects your premise. The very essense of SOCIALISM is that government OWNS EVERYTHING. No private enterprise, etc. How on earth can one accuse the President of driving the country in that direction ? Itis hyper-partisan of the first order to accuse him of that. As for the wanting to be FREE, pray tell what has the President done that has taken away ANY of your freedoms ? If anything, he has done what any COMPASSIONATE, BUSINESS SAVY leader would do, he has put in place a Health Care system that ASSURES, as much as possible a HEALTHY population that we need to make our free enterprise system work ! Get a grip and look at the facts and if you are objective you will come away feeling better and knowing that his social PROGRAMS and NOT SOCIALISM is what you are seeing. It is all GOOD BUSINESS !

        • workformore

DO YOU HONESTLY THINK THAT GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION IN HEALTH CARE IS GOING TO MAKE IT BETTER? If waiting 19 weeks to see a specialist sounds good to you ,as in Canada, thenI am happy for you. Health care will suffer as it does in other socialized systems. If we were a strong economy, I would support more government assistance but we are not a strong economy and the money has to come from our citizens. We can’t pull it from our ears. Without a strong work force, we are dreaming. We need to focus on getting our commerce back not programs that we cannot afford. Therefore, the government will take money from the people who currently are making nice incomes (that can support our economy),until they have more going to someone else’s well fare than their own. How long can this work? You can only take from someone so long until there is nothing else to take then the system fails. That is why I call it socialism and socialism never works. In response to the government owning everything…..the government can only take , not own. After a while only the elitists have the money and the government fails. Read ” THE ROAD TO SERFDOM” by HYAK. We are on the road. You may recognize the familiar rhetoric if you read history. I am a democrat so please do not accuse me of being partisan. I will revisit this conversation mentally over the next 10 years, as I hope you do and please do not lose sight of the warning signs. They are in play down to the campaign slogan” FORWARD”. This was used by Marx and Stalin….The joke could be on all of us. I am all for being healthy but naivety can be corrected

          • Don’t let fear and distrust cloud your judgement. Your level of fear appears at first glance to be tad irrational. Just what government intervention into your health care are you so freightened of? Delays for certain kinds of appointments take place in this country as well my friend, and in itself does not indicate socialism or a problem of government intervention. BTW, when was the last time you witnessed a public outcry in Canada to adopt the American health care system? Never my friend.

          • workformore

The country is now evolving into another phase. We all have to pay and how much are you willing to pay for someone else’s welfare?(and will it be better? ……doubtful) If that is your preference to have the government take over your personal health care, then accept it. I prefer that I have more control and get to vote on such important things in my life. That right was not given to me. If you are happy then be happy. Many Canadians and people all over the world want our health care. …..and in a few years we will want what we have, back but it will be too late. Call me irrational …..Is the price worth it?……It sounds like you think “yes”. The last specialist I saw took 4 weeks. Under this new plan some people will never see the specialist.

          • Dave_dido

In recent years almost a million Americans have gone bankrupt due to medical bills. 75% of these people had health insurance that was not adequate. In Canada, Spain, Italy, France, and England in recent years not one person has gone bankrupt or died because they couldn’t afford healthcare. How much worse do things have to get before you will comprehend that our healthcare system is broken? How many more Americans will have to suffer because of your stubborn addiction to an ideology?

          • oldtack

I agree with you 100% Guest! When we get romney in office and get Paul Ryan in charge we’ll show all these worthless shiftlass freeloaders off any assistance. If they can’t or wont work then let them starve. If they can’t pay for Health Insurance close the doors to the hospitals and clinics and let thme die in the streets. Why shoul I or hardworking person in the GREAT country have to pay anything for the poor and amimed or the unfortunates. We have to pay these people minimum wage and if they can’t make it it’s no skin off our noses. The motto should be “Look out for number 1. I got mine and ot thunder with you. Root hog or die !

Is this not correct? I hope not. But, in all the drivel you have placed on this site that sure appears to be your stance. And the sources you quote or suggest identifies you and your stance.

If your Ilk do take charge then I say “God help this Country because you people have Damned it.

          • Did you read the article! how can you expect this economy to keep growing with over 40 million of your citizens without health care? Hey, come to Taiwan…You can see an expert doctor within a day! Needed an operation, scheduled an appointment within one week. The cost was about 1/10 of cost in the USA! And care equal to or better than your doctor in the USA. You don’t see people here dying because they can’t afford health care! Shame on your America, mine can’t tolerate people in the richest country in the world dying for lack of health care. I’d like to know how a country that claims to be Christian can tolerate such a society. I’d like to know where you get your evidence that in Canada you have to wait 19 weeks to see a specialist! Show us some facts and stop listening to FOX NEWS, they don’t seem to know the facts are either!

      • djras1

Work opportunities are UP. Not as fast as some had hoped, but we stopped the hemorrhaging that was happening at the end of Bush’s term (>600,000 losing their job EVERY MONTH). Who is telling you what you CAN eat? Who is telling you HOW to take care of your ill? Doctors tell us what we SHOULD and should NOT eat, but they have no more control over you driving though McD’s than the govt. National Debt IS a problem, but we CANNOT afford to cut enough to balance the budget. Taxes MUST go up to help payoff some of the unfunded MESS that was left by previous administrations. We had a Balanced (or close to it) budget under Clinton. Bush immediately cut taxes and raised spending to unheard of levels. Go back to Reagan’s tax rates and thing would get healthy. Govt regulations put in place recently have NOT stifled business growth. They have protected us from BLINDLY driving off a cliff again.
If you think Romney will do ANYTHING to help the average person then you truly are blind. He ONLY has big business’ interest. If you think his business success is a model for the future of the US then we are in trouble. Ship more jobs overseas, unemployment will double. How many jobs did Mitt CREATE last year with his MILLIONS in profits??? Not a single new job (except for his election campaign staff)!

        • workformore

Do not kid yourself Obama is now a millionaire too. He is getting richer everyday. Are you? Am I? The schools now have been voting down bake sales, because of obesity, Lemon aide stands are illegal, and 2 children with healthy lunches they carried to school were forced to eat the approved chicken nuggets instead. (Tell me that doesn’t cause obesity) If you do not read, I do not want to spend time explaining these topics. If you support Obama’s programs, you should be a happy little camper. I am very skeptical. I voted for him for the 1st term but I will vote for the best opposing candidate only because we can not afford to pay for all the debt we have incurred . We have to tighten upon the spending .We have to get out of debt. We need jobs. Less Government in our everyday lives. Obama is a nice man . I wasn’t a Busch fan at all but we cannot give up this much control to our government. America is the biggest corporation in the world and it needs to be treated like a business. We have to have a balanced spread sheet. It will take a while but we can’t keep throwing money out the window. China could own us anytime it is in their best interest. I want the jobs created to be for the citizens and not the bureaucracy that perpetuate cronyism . Obama has a very bad record of creating government jobs, more than any president on record. All I can say is God help us!

          • djras1

How can you say Obama has a very bad record on govt jobs??? 600,000 Govt job REDUCTIONS in last 3 years. This has been offset by 4.5 million private sector jobs. Check the BLS.GOV website… stop listening to faux news for your jobs reports.
Where do you get your news??? where are lemonaide stands illegal??? WHO was FORCED to eat chicken nuggets??? Give sources or it is just BS.

      • SaneJane

What freedom did you have four years ago that you don’t have now? How is wanting Americans to have decent healthcare socialist? Health insurance provided by private insurance companies is far from socialistic. Do you know what constitutes the national debt? $4.68 Trillion of the debt is treasury bonds held by Social Security and Medicare. The rest is made up of investments in treasury instruments by pension plans, mutual funds, insurance companies, individuals, banks, savings and loans, state and local governments and, yes, foreign countries. Did you know that treasury instruments owned by foreign countries total $3.5 Trillion which is less than what SS and Medicare have. Worrying about the national debt only came into vogue when President Obama took office even though it had ballooned under Bush. Have you even owned a Savings Bond? If you did you owned part of the national debt. In addition, these treasury instruments have varying maturity dates, some 30 years or more. Please start getting your information and news from reliable sources. Takes a bit more time and effort but being a hard worker you shouldn’t mid.

        • Guest

I want to be able to vote on issues not be told by my president how it is going to be. Our president bypassed the proper, and legislative channels laid out for him to follow. Therefore the declaration was not a democratic action. Never should a president overstep the boundaries set up for our governance. The healthcare proposal is not socialist . The way it was approved was not done properly. He is our President with rules to follow. The medical treatment will change dramatically when we have strict economic guidelines to follow .

Yes I did purchase bonds but I have no confidence in bonds now. Would you purchase one now as a result of our immediate economic future? The economy is not generating REAL growth but we are borrowing like we have real income. In my personal life, I would be prosecuted for kiting funds. Our debt grows every second we breath just from interest…….16 TRILLION in debt. I am surprised a sane person is comfortable with that.

My family has been affected dramatically in the last 3 years by under-employment so yes we have lost freedoms. Vogue or not my family struggles but I am happy you are being taken care of.

          • SaneJane

You are happy I am being taken care of? You know nothing about me and I can only assume you are implying that I do not carry my own weight. I can sympathize with your families struggles as I have some of my own. Just to be clear about how I am being taken care of, I got my first full-time job at 17 and retired at 67. If you need any help with the math that is 50 years. My retirement funds, valued at $500,000, were wiped out when the company I had worked for 30 years went bankrupt. Since this company was owned by the employees thru an ESOP the money was gone. The ESOP was a way for the owner to get his $100 million out of the company tax free but left the company heavily indebted. Still, I do not count losing ones job as losing freedoms. Unless I missed something, the healthcare law must have passed the legislators before the President signed it, so how was the approval not done properly. What rules were broken. Health insurance will still be provided by private insurers and most of us will still be paying premiums to these companies. I would like some clarification about the strict economic guidelines you expect. US bonds are still considered the safest investment in the world, they just don’t earn much interest but what does these days. I do not buy bonds because of the low yield and long terms. There are a lot of things I am uncomfortable about but the nation debt is not near the top of the list. You will probably blow off this suggestion but a guy named Rodger Mitchell has a blog about Monetary Sovereignty and I think you should read some of his articles. Not just the explanation of MS, I don’t understand all of this, but how it relates to the economics of our country. I think you are worrying about the wrong things.

      • Levelland

That would be good – to stop thinking about Party lines. But please remember who got us into this, what Obama inherited as a result, and who has been TRYING to fix it during the past three years. But, when the other side says “NO” to everything from the jobs bill to trying to keep student loans interest rates from doubling, and instead of working toward putting more people to work, they are diverting to social issues. No one will be free if we have the government telling us what to believe (as in religion), or what to do, (as in attacking many freedoms including contraception, of all things). The radical right would want us to have a state religion (their religion). For some reason, they think they are qualified to tell everyone else how they should believe, what personal choices they should make. I am convinced you do not know what loss of independence and freedom is, until the radical right prevails. Then you will look back to the good old days. What is frightening is that the republicans are being controlled by this radical right wing thought.

      • That is because the Republicans want us to go the way of France and Greece! Are you so blind you cant see that just cutting programs for people will destroy us like it did in Europe? The voters in France and Greece finally woke up! They are not dumb like you think they are…they are people! I think Obama has a great program to bring us out of this recession; and statistics already prove we are so much better off than Europe! European countries went the way of the Tea Party and the Republicans! HAS IT WORKED? NO, no more than Bush’s big tax cuts for companies with the promise they would then create all kinds of jobs! I say to you, WHERE ARE THE JOBS FROM THE BUSH TAX CUTS? Do you need to have someone take a hammer to your head, or are you so blind you refuse to see!

        • Jeannie69

This one is really funny but why am I crying.

    • I agree 100%

ChristoD you need to stop watching Chris Mathews, Ed, and Rachel. We the Independents see what is happening in this Country and want it stopped. Obama was voted in as President and he has failed terribly. Black or white has nothing to do with this election. Get over it !

      • ChristoD

Don’t watch any of those folks Jeannie69. Why would you assume that because I speak the truth ? What exactly do you the ‘independents’ see ? Is it that the President, in concert with Pres. Bush saved the banks or they saved GM and Chrysler via LOANS that the citizens got paid back with interest or he saved us from a deeper recession and possibly a depression or he ended the war in Iraq with HONOR and no jump suits on aircraft carriers or that he has handled foreign affairs masterfully or he passed a long overdue and needed Health Care program that has coverage for almost ALL Americans or that he directed the execution of Osama Bin Laden or that he has managed the middle east transition masterfully ? Which of those accomplishments despite NO help from the Republicans do you have a problem with ? Where exactly has he ‘failed miserably’ ? Are you smoking something or have you been pulling a Rip Van Winkle over the last 3 plus years ? Oh and by the way, if he got ANY help from the GOP (Greed Over People) party that has promised jobs but delivered none, nada, zilch. In fact with there new ‘austerity’ program they would put us back into a recession just as we have seen in Europe ? What exactly is bothering you Miss Independent Lady ?

      • oldtack

Jeanie sixtyniner ?? You and your Ilk have a mandate that ALL Americans walk lock -step with your idealogies come hell or high water. From your diatribes you leave the impression you are one of those Evangelicals sanctioned by the One on high to be a personal messenger to we deluded ones and force us into the RIGHT way. You probably agree with those who decrie Sharia Law but you would gladly embrace Evangelical Law, Come out of you closet and look at real life.

Republicans have no values any more so they claim freedom as their core value which is code for I am going to act like a two year old and do exactly as I please and if you try to stop me I will break your toys. They are in such chaos the only thing they produce is temper tantrums followed by extreme breath holding.

  • montanabill

    E. J., just because the Europeans don’t want to give up their government largess doesn’t make it the right thing to do. Who’s going to pay for their health care, education, long lunches, long vacations, early retirement and subsidized transportation when they run out of rich people to tax? By the way, you forgot to add one more statistic to your rosy employment picture. Nearly 88 million people (that is a lot) who are capable of working are no longer looking for jobs and aren’t counted in the unemployment numbers. And that number has been going up. Pump priming with borrowed or printed money? You’ve got to be kidding!

  • Here is some research as to the new world philosophy of the GOP. and its’ loving companion ALEC and the Tea Party. But in truth it is nothing new. Should I say “History is repeating itself. Economist Mundell-Tobin effect, is a theory that became a Divine Inspiration. It states.
In manipulating or exploiting the normal interest rate! The interest rate would rise slower in the Creating of Inflation! In understanding the buying power of those affect. Would loose their prosperity.. In the attempt, to protect their basic needs. [the common good and Honest living]. As it creates the undesirable affect of a lower interest rate. Driving it down. That is to say. Any form of extortion or manipulating of a monetary system. Will always devalue the normal interest rate and the prosperity of the common good and honest living! As it accelerates and devalues a monetary system! It came to composition through the Conservative Agenda of “Protectionism”.

    Mundell-Tobin effect and its precursor

With the North victorious in the War Between the States, Republican dominance was assured over the Southern Democrats. Although a combination of former Whigs, Moderate Republicans, Northern and Southern Democrats looked to lower tariffs, the Radical Republicans managed to eject the Southern delegations, arrest their opponents, overthrow Southern states, establish military despotism and overawe their opponents for the next ten years. The Lincoln era high tariffs remained in place for the next decade. The economic policy of Protectionism continued to dominate American politics until around the early 20th century. For the remainder of the century the issue was not as much about the “Level of Protectionism” as it was about the growth of Corporations and the Centralization of Capitalism and the subsequent issues regarding Labor Rights. Although the beneficiaries of Robber Barons, the GOP at first succeeded in forestalling the issues of corporate capital centralization and increasing “degradation of labor” by pointing to the success of Protectionism as the source for protecting American jobs. President William McKinley stated the United States’ stance under the Republican Party is thus:
“Under free trade the trader is the “master” and the “creator” the slave. Protectionism. Too “survive” is but the law of nature, the law of self-preservation, of the whole. Securing the highest and best destiny of the race of man. Yet. [It is said] that protectionism is immoral…. Why, if protection builds up and elevates 63,000,000 of people [the U.S. population], the influence of those 63,000,000 people elevates the rest of the world. We cannot take a step in the pathway of progress without benefiting mankind everywhere. Well, they say, ‘Buy where you can buy the cheapest’…. Of course cheap, applies to labor as to everything else. Let me give you a maxim. That is a thousand times better than that. And it is the protectionism maxim: ‘Buy where you can pay the easiest.’ And that place of earth is where “the master” wins its highest rewards.” [That is to say, as “creator” became a slave. As the master came to extort and exploit of the common good and honest living.]

President Ulysses S. Grant further echoes that in his quote here:
For centuries England has relied on protectionism, and has carried it to extremes and has obtained satisfactory results from it. There is no doubt that it is to this system that it owes its present strength. After two centuries, England has found it convenient to adopt free trade because it thinks that protectionism can no longer offer it anything. Very well then, Gentlemen, my knowledge of our country leads me to believe that within 200 years. When America has gotten out of protectionism “all” that it can offer. It too, will adopt free trade.

[That is! Through the deformation and take over of govern. Too Commercialize Our Constitution. That is. Liberalism seeks to protect ”Creator”. The laboring of Family! The Common Good and Honest Living through “Protectionism”! As Conservatism seeks to demonizes Protectionism as a very “Immoral” thing. That is the Preservation of Life. In order too privatize, exploit and disavow our basic needs on principal through economics. In the egocentric, that it is “Immoral” to triumph over the Natural Law of Survival for the very Sake of the Common Good to flounder it. As the Deformation of Govern brought into policy the Mundell-Tobin effect.]
After the depression in 1937 this brought into being the Conservative Manifesto. While the GOP managed to convince small businesses and labor of its “altruistic support” for their interests and well-being. Yet the increasing dominance of large corporations, pushed out of the market small manufacturers, artisans, craftsmen, and tradesmen. As they ultimately called into question the GOP’s true allegiance. In reply, Southern Democrats gradually rebuilt their party, restored a modicum of small industries in the South. And allied themselves with Northern Progressives both Republican and Democrat opposed to the Big Business domination of the GOP. This coalition had many differences. But it was staunchly opposed to the “great corporate trusts” that had built up. This marriage of convenience to face a common enemy reinvigorated the Democratic Party, which catapulted back into power. Realizing the large power Big Business had over the GOP, Northern Progressives sought free trade as a means of undermining the power base of Republicans; Woodrow Wilson would admit as much in a speech to Congress. Woodrow Wilson’s ideological understudy Franklin Roosevelt, would essentially blame the Great Depression upon the protectionist policies exemplified by the previous Republican President, Herbert Hoover. However, these rhetorical attacks were more “political talking points” required to differentiate the Democrats from Republicans, than real and deep ideological contrasts. Regardless of which party was in power, tariffs and other protectionist policies remained in place, with arguments over their rates and amounts being the issues defining the two parties. Consequently, Protectionism remained a policy of the government throughout the 20th century until it was finally totally abandoned by the US in 1973.
[This carried the agenda of “governing and policy” into the captivity of Big Business as it set Proclivity too the Mundell-Tobin effect. The “by whatever means necessary” of what the market will bear! As the GOP Agenda, deregulated the Banks and the Stock Markets of today. In the discarding of policy and regulation! As we look at what was abandoned within the “Conservative Manifesto” today!]
    The statements called for:
    1. Lowering taxes on capital gains and undistributed profits, As the absolute.
    2. Reducing government spending and balancing budgets. The devaluation laid against the wellbeing of the good and honest need.
    3. Restoring peace to the relationship between labor and industry – Abandoned
    4. Resisting government competition with private enterprise – Abandoned through lobbing and special interest!
    5. Recognizing the importance of profit in private enterprise – The Out sourcing of our Jobs for foreign profiteering today. As the banks out sourced our Checking and Saving Account through the speculators of the stock market.
    6. Protecting collateral as a prerequisite for credit- Abandoned for the Credit Card! Borrowing on the future of our progeny. Through the Mundell-Tobin effect
    7. Reducing taxes- through special interest and bribery.
    8. Maintaining states’ rights – abandoned through the shutting down of “bargaining rights” and our “voting rights”.
    9. Aiding the unemployed in an economical and locally responsible manner – being abandoned today.
    10. Relying on American free enterprise. – being manipulated and exploited today.
[As we see the statement the Old Right accused Roosevelt of, “ Promoting “socialism” and being a “traitor to his “class”. A social group defined as the Existentialist and its Exclusive right! Because The New Deal strongly supported “labor unions” which became the main target of conservatives. Laid against the mothering and fathering of the good and honest living today. When Roosevelt tried to bring the country out of depression and ease the plight of the unemployed. That is the wellbeing of the common good and honest living through the “New Deal”. Conservatives fought him every inch of the way. Sound familiar? The counterattack first came from conservative Democrats, led by presidential nominees John W. Davis (1924) and Al Smith (1928), who mobilized businessmen into the American Liberty League. That is! Those possessing the “greater advantage” set in the greater liberty of the few. In opposition to the New Deal.]
What came from the Old Right. A group of conservative free-market anti-interventionists, originally associated with Midwestern Republicans led by Hoover and Robert A. Taft, the son of former President William Howard Taft. That is the philosophy, “to aid and protect is “Immoral”! The Preservation of Life is a “Great Sin”. As we see in our present now the on going plight of extremism and insatiable. While it’s all said to be “the Divine Will and Providence of Our Forefathers in the Name of Jesus Christ”! As we see the deformation and demonizing of the “past” laid against the President of Today. That is! The Agenda of Immorality, The Preservation of social security and health care is a great “Sin”! The Exclusive Right in new world philosophy of George W. Bush “If you say it enough! It must be true”!As we see the Tea Party .ALEXC, the Big Banks and Wall Street are all associated with the American Liberty League Or Chamber of Commerce of today.

This is a very twisted take on a the last 3 1/2 years. I will say Obama supporters are great “spinners” . Just ignore the facts and make things sound just wonderful. We can’t keep throwing money out the window with 140,000 more inefficient government employees than ever before. Now 16 TRILLION in debt and rising over $150,000.00 per hour. The entire world needs us to get things in order and common sense will tell all of us , if we are smart enough to listen, “We can not live very long on CREDIT. We need to quit spending money we do not HAVE!” You can not put a geographical description on COMMON SENSE.Whether we live in Europe or the United States, the fact is the same. Austerity is one avenue of saving our resources instead of depleting them. We have many more years of struggling and we need leaders not takers. We need a builder of jobs not government bureaucracy . All I ask is to cut spending and get rid of the people on the government payroll, who are doing nothing but DRAINING US of the resources we have left. Less Government , NOT MORE . That is how conservative people feel and not all conservative people are Republican. I am a DEMOCRAT!

    • workformore

I left out some zeros on our hourly interest charges on our debt. Each hour our debt rises by $150,000,000.00( MILLIONS not thousands), in interest charges on the 16 trillion we owe! If that doesn’t scare you then austerity is a word you probably would not understand in any geographical location.

      • oldtack

With all of your facts and rhetoric you have yet to offer any viable suggestion or solution. You sit on your duff and moan about it. Now – what is your proposal and when are you going to act on it? Tell us – I’m sure everyone would like to receive this great wisdom you will bestow upon us.

    • SaneJane

How does austerity save resources? Are you talking about money? The US is monetarily sovereign. Our debts are in dollars, payable in dollars and we control the dollars. I think you are wrong about government employees and I go now to look it up. You are no Democrat. You can call yourself anything but unless you have the philosophy to go with the title it means nothing.

    • oldtack

      Hey Guest
I worked 41 years in the United States Governemnt in many different Positions. I worked many 60 hour weeks for 40 hours pay. I flew many thousands of mile to places you don’t even want to know about to ensure the safety of idiots like you. You can rant and rave your BS all you wish. Don’t sit on your protected duff and call me an inneficient worthless overpaid leech on the government.
But – hey – what else am I to expect from wing nuts like you and your Ilk. God better Bless this Country because people like you are bent on Damning it.

Crawl out of your hole – and have a nice day – sincerely.

EJ comes up with yet another foolish and disjointed attempt to discredit conservatives. What kind of moron applauds voters who elect socialists on the basis that they will discard fiscal sanity and continue to plunge their countries into further debt by spreading more goodies around? Only a useful idiot like EJ and the rest of you dopes on the left could possibly see that as a “good” thing. Besides, we already elected a socialist in November 2008.

Here are the facts for you dummies that dont get it.

    1) We are $16 TRILLION in debt and growing quickly.
    2) $16 TRILLION is only what’s on the books and does not include Medicare or SS. Add those in and we are somewhere near $50 TRILLION in unfunded liabilities
    3) 44 cents of every dollar the Feds spend IS BORROWED
    4) The interest on the debt ALONE was $414 BILLION for FY2010. This is growing quickly.
    5) Our National Debt now exceeds our National Income (GDP)

You see, it doesnt matter if the voters of America want more spending and government granted goodies. We can vote for it but it does not change the math. The math says that the gravy train is running off the cliff. All of you leftist nutjobs out there act as if our national finances are no big deal…. as if we can just go on in debt forever. Only in leftist nutjob world does simple math become subjective.

You guys on the left have to wake up and face the facts. The spending MUST come to an end and we must get our fiscal house in order.

I know, I know… I’m get all of the “It’s Bush’s fault” crap in response. Yes, Bush was not a model of fiscal sanity. In fact, he was bad. But that’s NO EXCUSE for Obozo’s spending which is 10 TIMES WORSE. Stop playing the blame game and focus on what the real problems are. You are not going to have anything left for your valued social programs if we do not alter course quickly.

I am sorry to inform you of this, but it’s true. WE ARE BROKE!

    Have a nice day!

All the angst right now evolves on the upcoming Presidential Election. One would think the President is the Supreme ruler of the world. Well folks – HE AIN’T. The President is just as powerful as the Legislative branch lets him be. All of this skewed giagantic National debt and all of the Social giveaway programs and all of the questionable payments ot Foreign Nations did not originate from ANY President. All of these things had their origins in Congress. They are the ones that make the laws. They are the one’s that pass the laws. The only real power the President has is the power of Veto and even then he has no real power because the Legislative branches can over- ride his Veto.

We tend to focus on this Office while in many cases we ignore the Rats nest called Congress where all of this mess originates.

It is good to be involved but let us focus on the occupants of the House and Senate. Check their records and hold them accountable. If their record proves unacceptable then band together and oust them. And I am speaking of both sides of the Aisle – both Democrat and Republican. All of our present problems can be traced right back to this “August” group.

      • ObozoMustGo

old.. we actually agree on something… at least somewhat. Congress has been horrible for a long time AND YES, both parties have created the financial mess we are in today. It’s been going on with minor breaks for 100 years since the first leftist president, Woodrow Wilson.

However, the President is not as powerless as you say he is. And in fact, this president has become more imperial than any other. How many Czars does he have? Like 40 something? Each of them is unelected and not confirmed, yet they have enormous power through the regulatory arms of the government because the Executive is in charge of every department of government. The president also has the power of Executive Orders wherein he can basically lay claim to ANYTHING he wants. For decades, congresses of both R and D have been ceding power to the Executive Branch because they have been too feckless and weak. They pass laws that have catchy names and “good intentions” but lack substance other than to say that the agencies will figure out the details. They are abrogating their power so as to not be held accountable. We need term limits… BIG TIME!

We can disagree on many things, but the big things like our dire financial situation, we cant disagree on. The consequences of inaction are an end to our republic as we know it. And all you guys on the left will kick and scream because there’s no money to fund your socialist programs, just like the Greeks are doing now. Except in the US, it will be waaaaayyyyy worse than in Greece.

I dont mind having debates over what we spend our money on, defense, social saftey nets, etc. They are worthwhile discussions and are, in fact, the main duty of government. But we must keep our debates limited to the amount of money we take in and be responsible adults, not whiny children begging for more goodies. The cupboard is bare and the neighbors arent going to lend us food for much longer.

Does this make sense to you?

        Have a nice day, old!

        • oldtack

I agree with you on the main issues. As for Presidential Power – it’s back to base one – who ceded this power? Congress and Senate. To correct the problem these two Institutions -both left and right- need a good cleansing.
In the cleansing process let us be cognizant and ensure we select leaders that are not wing-nuts (right or left) and that we select those with that long lost value of Common Sense. Our Government is in one H of a mess and it is not attributable to any one particular President or Party. This has evolved over the last 60 years or so. There were Government enacted Assistance programs that were good in their intent and original purpose but the programs have been expanded and distorted by the two parts of our Legislative branches with no forethought of how to pay for them. Our Government is now akin to a shopaholic with an unlimited credit card and since 9/11 we have operated on a fear factor that has resulted in more Government deficit spending on dubious programs that have really not increased our safety over that which was here before 9/11.

We can argue and debate and disagree – and I sometimes enjoy that. But until the day that we effect a complee cleansing of the legislative Branch of our Government this problem will persist regardless of who we elect as “Leader”.

Have a good day Obo – i know I am. OLD

          • ObozoMustGo

old…. FINALLY… We have reached agreement. I think the screwing of the taxpayer has been going on for more than 60 years, though. More like 100 years, and in particular since both the 16th Ammendment and since Congress and Woodrow outsourced our currency to a private bank called the Federal Reserve. That has been a complete disaster.

And you have hit the nail on the head with the growth in fiscal irresponsibility since 9/11. Bush was bad, Obozo is unfortunately much worse.

The only real way we are going to cleanse congress is to enact term limits. That’s it. There is no other way to get these people off of their thrones. They will not leave unless they are kicked out by law.

Finally, we can agrue and debate about what programs to keep or change or start, but before we even discuss that, we have to settle on what the proper role of the federal government is in the first place. It all starts right there.’

Thanks for your input, old. I’ve enjoyed our exchange.

            Have a great day!

          • oldtack

If we can in any way get both sides (R&L) ot focus on these items we can all together effect a change. Good talking to you. Have a great tomorrow.

  • workformore

I left out 3 little zeros……,We are going deeper into debt, every hour from the interest on our 16 TRILLION dollar debt by $150,000,000.00 each hour. Tell me austerity is a bad thing.

    • SaneJane

Interest is so low it would be foolish to start paying off the debt. Austerity is a bad thing for a country. I wish I had the energy to answer you more fully but I think I already answered you earlier. Check into the makeup of the debt. You are basing your opinions on headlines, soundbites, catchy phrases, and propaganda. I don’t know where you do most of your research but it seems to be woefully lacking in substance.

  • jebco

Murdock is a nut-case and everybody knows it. If anyone rebels in this country it will be WE THE PEOPLE…just like it was done over 200 years ago…the it was Taxation Without Representation…..Now it is Taxation…Freebies….Disregard of The Constitution and The Bill of Rights and anything else those idiots in Congress can come with and the saddest part is they are being LED by the President of The United States……! Everybody is Crying Stupid Democates…Stupid Republicans….IT IS ABOUT TIME WE QUIT WORRY ABOUT PARTY LOYALTY AND START THINKING LIKE AMERICANS (GET A COPY OF THE FEDERALIST PAPERS, THE BILL OF RIGHTS AND THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA) THESE THINGS HAVE NOT BEEN TAUGHT IN OUR SCHOOLS SINCE THE EARLY 60’S…..VOTERS IN THIS COUNTRY (EVEN THE LEGAL ONES) AND EXPECIALLY THE YOUNGER ONES HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IS HAPPENING TO OUR COUNTRY.

PEOPLE, WAKE UP, OR THERE WILL BE A REVOLUTION AND WE WILL ALL BE THE LOSERS. GOD HELP AMERICA.

    • workformore

      I TOTALLY AGREE jebco!!

  • jebco

I have been reading the the previous Posts and it makes me so sad. I am not a Party Loyalist..I am an Independent…I try to look at things with an unbiased eye (which I admit I can’t always do, but I do try). I will say this…there are good and bad representation on both sides of the aisle. The Sad Part is that there ARE ‘two sides of the aisle’ (there should be One Side Working For the Good of the Common People) Since I am not a Party Loyalist, I am no more an Obama Supporter than I was a Bush Supporter. The President only has a certain amount of Power….Congress has more power than the President and The People have more power than Congress…..We have the VOTE but the problem is we don’t use it wisely….We listen to the Press too much and we seem to be overly impressed by Entertainers, expecially Hollywood … these are people who spend their lives pretending to be someone else (the movies), many didn’t finish school and most did not go to college and yet I am supposed to be influenced by them??? If Americans ever decide to start thinking for themselves, putting the absolute good of the Country above Party Politics, we will again have a strong Country but I worry that this will never happen. The “Republic For Which We Stand” has Stood Loger and Stronger than any that came before but it is now on Very Shakey Ground. WAKE UP AMERICAN PEOPLE, SUPPORT YOUR COUNTRY NOT YOUR PARTY.

  • The Republicans can’t seem to understand that what the repub leaders want is what was being done in Europe and it didn’t work. The US is in much better shape than Europe is becausee of the policies of President Obama, I don’t want to end up like Europe!!!

  • Melvin Chatman

    LOOK!
Lets get to the ROOT of the issue, OK?
There are certain things / positions / offices that are just not acceptable for a Black Man to be in – the main one is the White House.
If our President was a White Man, everything in the Universe would be back to n “normal” and all this hateful dialogue and stances would cease to exist!
It’s just not acceptable for a Black Man, a Woman, or a Latino to be President of the USA.
I do admire the President for even putting up with all the “CRAP” he endures on a daily basis, and, his patience is amazing.
Fact is, he’s smarter than the current GOP Candidate and “everybody” knows that he ain’t no PUNK!
The American people are also smarter than they are given credit for, and at that “critical moment” inside the Voting Booth, will again vote for Barak Obama.
Forty Two Male White Presidents before him, yet, he’s the “BLAME” for not fixing what they messed up in four years – CMON PEOPLE!!
Y’all know “BETTER” – quit acting like kids on the BLOCK – this is 2012, Grow Up or Move Over!
How many Women Presidents have had? So, who really messed it up? Ye shall know the TRUTH, and, THE TRUTH shall SET YOU FREE – PERIOD!!

    • SaneJane

Right to the heart of the matter. The Republican Party is 90% white and they are fighting for their very existence. They know they will soon be outnumbered and their backs are against the wall so no tactic is too dirty or destructive. They base everything they do on the “Southern Strategy” and “starve the beast”. They want to eliminate all social programs and use all the money for wars. Even Pat Buchanan has acknowledged this in many of his articles and he is a prominent Republican. They have to take down President Obama or they are going down themselves. Look at the states that are Republican. They are losing their relevance as a national party and this is their last chance at the White House. We are in for a bumpy ride.

  • karinursula

When I think that Romney could be President I get very scared. I can’t believe that the American public cannot see this. This would be beginning of the end for us. Can it
really be because the President is black? But it’s true, if the President says is raining and it is really raining the Repub would automatically say the sun shines.

    • Jeannie69

Romney has been successful and not a Community Organizer. Obama never started any business or managed one. On the economy Obama is not a leader and does not know how to fix the problems. Depends on others to do this for him and they are not qualified. He is good at running the mouth and he loves to travel. So tired of seeing him on TV for anything that will give him air time. Would like to know how much money has been spent on flights for Obama on Air Force 1 ? We are paying. Lots of time away from his Job.

      • Romney is a successful corporate raider costing tens of thousands of American jobs just to line the pockets of his morally bankrupt friends and family.

  • bluecloudsl

I hope that all Ameericans will think hard and long on who to vote in as President. Break with tradition, if you have always voted Republican does not mean you have to do all your life. We were born with a brain to make intelligent and wise decisions, use it. I feel that if the Republicans are elected, if you think you have problems now, just wait. The Republicans have conspired since the day Obama was elected to defeat him, it does and did not matter how much it hurt the country. There agenda is first, and what is frightening is we do not really know what their agenda is. Just imagine if Democrats and Republicans, for the good of the country, had worked together and started repairing roads, bridges, pipelines, how prosperous would the country be now? It is time to THINK and be honest with your evaluations. Discrimination is not dead, it is alive and thriving very well. Does the Republican party even know what the word Socialist means? I do not think so.

Your (lack of) intelligence comes through yet again Bozo man. Did you select that Obozo name using your limited intellect, Bozo or your surname Bozo ? I would gladly answer your question but why waste the keying since you aren’t bright enough to understand it anyhow, right Bozo ? Wipe droop from my chin….how freakin’ original. You are pathetic as well as VERY slow on the uptake. Later Bozo, now go back into your hole. 😉

          • ObozoMustGo

Won’t answer because you CAN’T answer, eh! Didn’t think I’d get an answer. I NEVER do. Useful idiots like you dont have ANY answers. It’s like asking you leftist nutjobs what is the tax rate % the would satisfy your definition of “fair shar”? I NEVER get an answer to that, either. Wonder why? No, actually I don’t wonder… I know why… because you can’t quantify that which is purely an emotional expression of jealousy and envy. There is, in fact, NO NUMBER.

The drool is back on your chin. Wipe it off again, please.

            Have a nice day!

          • ChristoD

Ah, the American ignoramous like you is so reassuring. It restores my faith in my country that they even let nitwits like you, who I am certain doesn’t know what 2 + 2 equals, live here and spew laughable absurdities. My guess is that you have evolved from warthogs and that your brain has, if you have one, has not fully developed yet so your total weight brain of, at the most, 2 ounces puts you in the same class as a turkey. Oops, sorry turkey population, I didn’t mean to insult you by putting you in the same category as Bozo here.

          • ObozoMustGo

Just like a typical useful idiot. Deflect the discussion away from anything that pins you into a corner.

So, what does Obozo mean when he says he wants to “fundamentally transform America?” Any idea in that vacuum you call a head?

            Have a nice day!

          • Dave_dido

Careful, Mr. O, I believe I did answer your question some time ago, but maybe you don’t remember. Let me tackle it from a different angle this time.
Our current top income tax bracket is 35%. This is low compared to historical rates going back to 1913 when it was only 7%. By 1917 it was already up to 67% and stayed near that for about 10 years. From 1928 to 1932 it dropped to 25% when we had the Great Depression. Then up to the Reagan years the rates were pretty high- always above 50%. Reagan dropped it to 28% but then Clinton raised it back to 39% and we had a surplus. The Bush tax cuts dropped the rate to 35% and you know what happened to the deficit during the Bush years- it skyrocketed.
So it seems to me that 39% is about right for wealthy people.(Don’t forget that most of their income is taxed as capital gains which is a lower rate plus they have a lot of loopholes designed especially for them.) If we’re fighting a war or two we’d probably need about 45%.
Now conservatives always talk about going back to the good old days. I often hear them say “I want my country back.” Maybe you’d like to go back to 1950-1963 when the top rate was over 90%.
So I say that conservatives need to quit their crybabying and belly up and pay for the wars that they seem to be so proud to support. How does 45% sound to you for a top tax bracket? (Now you can’t say you never get an answer to your question.) Let me know if you want my opinion about the bottom bracket.

          • ObozoMustGo

Dave… just like all leftist nutjobs who discuss the days of 90% tax rates, you fail to disclose the backside of that fact which was NO ONE actually paid anything near 90%. Super high rates have historically come with super big loopholes. And any of you dummies that actually believe that confiscating high amounts of one’s earnings is actually good for the economy must be stone-cold idiots, or bold faced liars. Who wants to work and save when you cant keep the fruits of your own labor? No one in their right mind does.

And all of you leftist nutjobs also tend to NEVER discuss the other half of the equation that produces deficits and debts —– SPENDING!!!!!!!

We don’t have a revenue problem you dopes… WE HAVE A SPENDING PROBLEM.

You have to be a complete moron to believe that if we just taxed more, then politicians would not spend more than they take in. What kind of idiot believes that lie, despite 100 years of evidence to the contrary? Really, what kind of idiot believes such nonsense? Only a truly leftist nutjob and useful idiot believes that lie.

45% is WAAAAAYYYYY to high. Especially when you consider that’s just Federal and doesnt include state or local or real estate or sales taxes. Considering that, 35% is too high. If you want to increase revenues, you have to increase the tax base, not the rates.

As it is right now, nearly 50% of Americans pay NO FEDERAL INCOME taxes. NONE. And of those, about 85% are NET TAKERS of taxes. How is it fair that 1/2 of Americans pay 100% of all income taxes that benefit the other half? IT’S NOT FAIR!.

Fair is when everone pays the same flat rate. We all pay the same rate, we are all treated equally under the law. 10% – 15% would be good. No deductions. No income tax on the first $50K in earnings for anyone. That is fair.

            Have a nice day!

          • Dave_dido

If you design a system that has $0 tax on earnings less than $50,000 you would have more than 50% of Americans paying no tax. You refuse to understand that 5% of the population controls 80% of the wealth. These are the people who have benefitted most from the U.S. economy; they are the ones who should support it. They are the ones who control Wall Street and bribe our officials so that they can gamble freely and have the U.S. taxpayer pick up their losses. They are the ones who bribe our officials to put loopholes in the tax code for their benefit, such as Mitt Romney’s $200million tax-free trust for his children.( So don’t tell me how previous generations had more write-offs and never paid that 90%- of course they didn’t ,but neither do today’s millionaires pay the 35%- look at Mitt Romney whose effective rate was 14%.) And let’s not forget that 911 was an attack on America’s business interests- that’s why Al Qaeda went after the twin towers. Make no mistake, we have two wars in the Middle East to protect America’s business interests and we’ve spent several trillion on those wars. Let the millionaires pay for those wars- they are the ones at risk, not the poor and working class who no longer have anything to lose.

          • ObozoMustGo

Dave… $50K was just a number I threw out for argument. If you Google it, you get a range of responses from $46K for individuals in 2009 to $63K for total household income. Whatever the threshold, it needs to be set so that the tax base is broadened but I’ll accept the compromise that the lowest earners dont pay much if any at all.

Our issue is not that we don’t tax rich people enough. There aren’t enough of them. It’s that we don’t tax enough people some amount, and more importantly, our politicians SPEND too much. For too long, the tax code has been used by politicians to punish and reward Americans, and is the favorite tool for getting reelected. This is why, after many decades, the tax code has been used to buy votes to a point where a massive number of Americans now have their needs taken care of by other Americans through the threat of jail if they don’t pay. By the way, the number of millionaires has been decreasing rapidly in the past few years. Now I know leftist nutjobs are happy with the decrease in millionaires, but excactly how is that good for our economy? A rational person would suggest that we want MORE millionaires. A jealous and envious person sees it the opposite way.

Quoting Romney’s tax rate of 14% is deceptive. It’s actually 14.5% for the 2 years disclosed. I know it’s nitpicking but if you’re going to use it as a slam against the guy, at least be correct. You’re not stupid, Dave. I think you’re probably a pretty smart fella. But, what you intentionally leave out is several things:

            1) 80% of Americans have a LOWER effective tax rate than Romney pays and have access to the same tax structure and deductions that he does. It’s all perfectly legal.
            2) He has massive itemized deductions like $7MILLION in charitable donations. He actually GIVES MORE THAN HE PAYS IN TAXES. This does not trouble me one bit.
            3) Almost all of his income is in the form of Capital Gains, which are taxed at 15% on the investment side of the ledger, but are taxed at full tax at the corporate level (35%) before they are paid out or 35% at the individual level before they are invested in the first place. Capital gains taxes are double taxation.

Finally, your assertions about Al Qaeda are correct. Those were economic attacks and cost us in the trillions in our economy, not counting the cost of the wars. After being attacked, it is perfectly legitimate to strike back. I agreed with the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. I do not agree with nation building. It’s the nation building that costs the most because it’s time and money and most importantly lives. But to imply that somehow the wars are ONLY for rich people with business interests is patently false and you know it. In truth, a slower economy affects ALL Americans. And terrorist attacks blow up poor women and children just the same as they do rich women and children. Fighting the terrorists on their own soil was a good strategy for it’s time, but it needs to end. Too bad Obozo committed to Afghanistan for another 12 years. I dont hear you guys on the left screaming about that.

            Have a nice day!

          • perhaps from a greed laden, profit at all cost’s, to a more compassionate and equitable country where all the rules are not skewed by special interest’s and corporate meddling.
I own a small business and am a Marine Corps veteran, but I am also compassionate to my fellow humans. Yes we need reform, at all levels of government, but the out of control corporatism has nearly destroyed the middle class.

          • ObozoMustGo

Hi Joe! I hope you are well.

I’m not really sure what you mean by “out of control corporatism”. I’m also not sure why the left has such an obsession with corporations. I think about this frequently and the only rational answer I can come up with is that on EVERY issue, the left MUST have a boogey man. Without a boogey man, you don’t have any argument.

Why does the left hate corporations? It can’t be that you lefties hate corporations because of the legal forms that must be filled out to create one. That doesnt make sense. It can’t be because you hate all of the millions of individual people that make up the companies whose legal filings enable them to issue stock, could it? I don’t think so.

Maybe, what you mean is that you don’t like crony capitalism. You know, kind of like the deal Jeff Imelt has with his buddy Obozo that enables GE to buy a tiny bank in the mid-west so that it could avail itself of bailout billions. Or kind of like the fact that Wall Streeters give tens of millions to Obozo and there are NO prosecutions of a single Wall Streeter by DoJ since Obozo came to office, despite all of his rhetoric about “fat cats on Wall St.” or blaming the housing crisis on “greedy banks”. Is that what you dont like?

Please explain this leftist obsession with corporations. Thanks for your help.

            Have a great day, Joe!

Whatever Europe does or doesn’t do regarding its economic/financial problems may not mean too much if President Obama continues to take public policy positions that a large portion of his electoral base is uncomfortable with, and even disagrees with, in the 2012 Elections. The point in question is Obama’s insertion of the Federal Government’s nose into the internal affairs of the Roman Catholic Church on the issue of required health care provisions that the Roman Catholic Church provide its employees at schools, universities, hospitals, and charities when the Roman Catholic Church’s values are opposite. The addition of the question of same gender marriages just intensifies the alienation of older, traditional value holding, voters who are more concerned with their eternal souls than political issues in 2012.

    • ObozoMustGo

Steve… thank you for your common sense post. There’s not a lot of that going on around here in this sea of leftist insanity!

Please keep posting and fighting the good fight.

      Have a nice day!

    • SaneJane

If someone chooses to vote against President Obama because of matters based on sex then they deserve what they get. The Republicans keep injecting these irrelevant matters into the mix to keep the ignorant up in arms and to foster discord. I am an older voter but if traditional values means stomping on others to get my soul into heaven then I guess I will have to take a pass.

  • Europe did the worst of both sides here, they raised taxes like the left want, and they cut spending and programs like the right wants. So they paid more, got less, and people had to stop spending, and then the demand went down, and that was the down fall of many countries in Europe.

  • bluecloudsl

ObozoMustgo. You tell me what he meant,Obozo.

  • Gosh I wonder if I could become a member of the TEA PARTY. I have no meaningful education, no scruples, no sense of morality, low self esteem, and I’m functionally illiterate. I like to disrespect anyone who doesn’t believe in creationism or who thinks mankind is contributing to the global warming myth. I believe that all non-white or mixed race people are inferior to me and that only poor people should pay taxes. So am I qualified to join?

    • oldtack

Could you join – sure you could join. but – be careful. With your described assets you may find yourself as their prime Candidate for President in 2016. They are working hard on old Joe the Plumper right now and he doesn’t come close to your qualifications.

  • What is wrong with you people who don’t know the first thing about socialism as an economic system but feel compelled to comment on it? What makes you think people are not free in a socialist system, political or economic? It couldn’t be any worse than the current failed consumer-capitalist system, and would be a lot more fair to everyone. There may even be fewer desperately poor people. Socialism is NOT Communism, and even Communism in its pure form is better than the caste system we have built here. Any form of socio-economic political system is what we make of it; the Soviets took Communism to a place it wasn’t meant to go and we in the U.S. perverted capitalism. The problem is not the form of government, but how we corrupt it or allow it to be corrupted. ChristoD, although I resonate with your comments because they are factual and true, I’m sorry but I have to agree with Patuxant, that a major problem for the right-wing about Obama is that he’s black. From that springs all the other wacko issues they dream up.

  • bluecloudsl

America it is time to stand up as one and tell the Republicans to do their job for which you hired them to do and stop playing games and holding the poor and middle class hostage. Now they want to eliminate Medicare, stop food going to poor children, stop medical treatment for poor children and to eliminate programs designed to help the handicap, take away needed food stamps. I am not sure, but is America still attached to our neighbour Canada or have we drifted to a country like Africa where the persons running countries in Africa are already doing what the American REPUBLIC PARTY wants to do. Seniors you had better smarten up or you will lose social security and medicare. This is todays news. I ask you what do the Republican politicians give up (Democrats as well) to help reduce the debt. Republicans have signed a pledge drawn up by Norquist, who is Norquist. Why does he create such fear in the Republicans and makes them to frightened to help all people, just the capitalists and rich people. What does the Republican party owe to these people, do they owe to many favours and that is why they continually want to punish the poor and middle class and reward the rich. Break with habits, if you are a republican and really do not agree with the Republican party for social or humane reasons, do not vote republican even if you have been a lifetime republican now is the time to break the habit. THINK Americans. The republicans deserve to lose the 2012 election and the house. What have they done for you? Really what have the done? Do their children go hungry, did they lose their homes, cars, lively hood? The right answer to these questions is up to you.

  • steve_dobkowski

Dear SaneJane: I often wonder whether any people actaully read what others write on these websites. Its nice to know you read my note.

There are people in America who actually feel that keeping American families together and happy and at Peace is an important reason for being a Democrat, or for that matter, being a Republican. That’s why I have been an active, partisan Democrat in Michigan for 52 years. I am a member of the Michigan Democratic Party State Central Committee.

As to the question of same gender marriages I think we can accept the major reason people through history married is to have childen and therefore continue the human race. I personally don’t care who lives with other person, but many, many people care about giving the title of a “marriage” to 2 people of the same gender when they can’t produce a child to carry on the human race. In their minds that union is not a marriage. They feel offended amd I’m afraid some of them will not vote for Obama. They very well may not vote at all because they don’t like Romney and if they don’t want to vote for President, they may not even go to vote on Election Day.

I am unhappy with Obama because I’m to the Left of Obama on many issues. But on the issue of Abortion and same gender marriage, I’m Pro-Family and Pro-Life. I am also a practicing Roman Catholic who think married priests would be OK. I think the 2012 Elections will be much closer than the talking heads of TV Land think. But one factor going for Obama is that Romney has a lot of baggage and he makes foolish statements.

    • joyscarbo

I don’t think you need to worry about the president offending anyone about same sex marriage. Most Americans believe in allowing same sex marriage civil unions. This does not mean you’ll be seeing two men or women having weddings in your catholic perish or cathedral. No federal law can force a church, perish, temple, synagogue or mosque to allow gay people admittance, muchless perform religious marriage cermonies. My state does, however have many places of worship that welcome gay people and their partners so there will be many ceremonies and celebrations taking place if same sex marriage is found to be a fundamental human right by law, which is should certainly be. Religion may not like that, but it doesn’t like a lot of things that are legal- like abortion and insurance-paid birth control. (Curiously, religion doesn’t seem to preoccupy itslef with matters like war and the death penalty. Religion seems to see these issues as inconveniently necessary.)Religiously, if it’s not for you, don’t do it. Just don’t try to force everyone else to believe what you believe or do what you do. You only own one soul, and that is your own. Take care of it and be an example and inspiration to those you have most influence with.

  • joyscarbo

I feel ambivalent. I love that Obama takes the high road with republican obstinance and unwillingness to work with Democrats to help lift our country out of this recession.
On the other hand, I wish Obama would get pissed off, take off the gloves and fight like hell!!
The high road is the more difficult road, but takes more integrity and dignity to follow.
    The other just feels good.
The fun part will be when Obama and Romney face off. Romney is SO FAR out of his depth and Obama will decimate Romney. Of course, Romney has about as much depth as a mud puddle. It’s hard to make a big splash in such a small amount of water!!

  • Yes, the Conservatives want the economy to fail, they hate President Obama,so much,Republicans also, want desperatly, for Obama to fail, and to replace him with what?? a Morman..They cannot say anything good about Obama. Republicans are so mean, hateful, and scarry,I have never seen anything like this before.McConnel is such a mean hateful man, along with Boehner,(two peas in a pod), all these Republicans are so full of hatered. They talk about jobs, but will not pass the Jobs Bill or a Bill with the word job in it.They are suppose to be born again Christians,Really??Republicans ARE the Party of NO,OBSTRUCTIONIST,Cronies,Lunatics etc. They also lie so much, the Gov. in Wi. is the biggest Liar ever..I don’t call that Christian, they have alot to answer for.Walker also has Criminal Lawyers hired, fraud, fraud, fraud ,written all over it.He is being investigated and has been for a long time, now. He can not be trusted. Walker is as guilty as the day is long,in some way or the other. Walker also has been traveling all over the Country bringing in Big Donations (all from out of State)from the rich,Koch Brother,Karl Rove’s Group,Dick Armey’s Group,U S Chamber of Commerce, big Corps.the rich on Wall Street,he even had Gov.Christy from Jersey here, campaigning for him,Walker lies so much,he says the Dems are the ones bringing in big $$$’s with the Unions etc.not true.Dems have,PEOPLE POWER.and Walker the Big Rich $$$$’s Walker has damaged Wi. so much, (and it is continuing)I don’t know if ever it will get straightened out.Have to get Walker out of Office so we can get back to the Truth, creating jobs, back to fixing the damage Walker has done to Education etc. I am so sick and tired of his face on T.V.,Radio, etc.Walker damaged Milwaukee and blames the Mayor for it Walker did the damage.Another big lie.

  • SharonConway

i am so tired of hearing that marriage is for procreation. my boyfriend and i are 65. i am far past the age of being able to have a child and never really wanted one. are people telling us we can’t get married because we can’t procreate? it is a stupid argument. my gay doctor and his partner adopted a beautiful child who is thriving and will have everything she ever wants. they obviously love her deeply. the conservatives are hateful people. my 85 year old father left the republican party last year because all they focus on are stupid social issues. they are not christians regardless of how loud they shout it.

  • This article should be in every paper and news cast this weekend. The people of this country doesn’t see what is going on with this conservative agenda. They are blaming the socialist government of Europe for their downfall, hence uninformed of the facts. I wonder how many of the Tea Party voters know the definition of the word austerity. France and Greece have waken up, Denmark has to start over due to the austerity policies of their government. If republicans do get control of all 3 branches of our government, I feel sorry for us. Talk about homeless.

  • What is left of the remnants of the late, great GOP the extreme right, is that they have signed on to the “Starve the Beast” theory of Federal Government. More tax cuts for the non job creating “job creators”, more cuts to entitlements, and the “safety net” or the poor which Romney is” not concerned about” and which he previously said he would “iix” if broken, is now part and parcel of the “Marvelous” Romney endorsed Ryan Budget.

No solutions, no answers, just failed economic theories, all guaranteed to make the rich richer, the poor poorer, shrink the middle and working classes, the deficits higher, and the United States of America weaker as the GOP works hard to transfer more and more wealth to the top 2%. In their blind hostility to Obama and moderation, they will attempt to direct the US down the same path as ancient Rome, and the once powerful City State of Venice, both which failed for exactly the same economic reasons, too much wealth and political influence in the hands of the top 2%.

The GOP plan, give them more, and then out of the goodness of their hearts, they will create jobs, instead of doing what they have done during three prior GOP Administrations, which is buy more stuff, not invest in America.

If you want to encourage the GOP “Job Creators” to create jobs, increase their taxes to the rates during the 60s and 70s, then offer tax credits, and deductions for investments in new technology, job creation, manufacturing, alternative forms of energy, and so on.

Only then will the rich and Corporate American take their 3 trillion dollars of off shore profits, and invest them, in jobs, instead of leaving them in offshore banks.

  • Jeannie69

Wrong ! Better examine it all Miccala before you go down the tube. Do you have a job. are you union, gay, pro abortion, What ? I think the tea party is good for the country.

    • ObozoMustGo

Absolutely correct, Jeannie! What the leftist nutjobs fail to realize is that the Tea Party has never been about Republican or DemocRAT. It’s about 3 concepts:

      1) Fiscal responsibility
      2) Constitutionally limited government
      3) Free market economics

While they have been saying the Tea Party is just Republican, what they don’t realize (or are not honest) is that the Tea Party is slowly working to dismantle the old Republican party machine. That’s a good thing. The DemocRATS need a similar peaceful movement to dismantle the socialist takeover of the DemocRAT party machine.

America will be better off if both party machines are dismantled and recreated.

      Have a nice day!

  • We are becoming “European” because in Europe people are treated much better. Better day care, better health care, better transportation, better living all around for the poor, which I have become one of.

    • ObozoMustGo

yomama… Move to Europe. It’s that simple.

      Have a nice day!

  • Safronia11

Acting European???? Ever been to Europe? The Conservatives are just being themselves. They are whining, hateful, demanding, confrontational, provocative, corrupt liars. Who will use any dirty trick or outright lies to gain control of anything & everything. They are school yard bullies. They are fearful of a black President. When cowards feel threatened..this is the way they behave.
