Hillary Clinton: ‘Fake News A Threat To U.S. Democracy’

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called “fake news” a danger that must be addressed quickly, in a rare public appearance on Thursday, a month after she lost the presidential election in a campaign marked by a flood of such propaganda.

“We must stand up for our democracy,” Clinton said during a tribute to retiring Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid, referring to what she called “the epidemic of malicious fake news and false propaganda that flooded social media over the past year.”

Clinton urged action from both the private and public sectors to combat the false reports.

“It’s now clear that so-called ‘fake news’ can have real-world consequences. This isn’t about politics or partisanship. Lives are at risk. Lives of ordinary people just trying to go about their days, to do their jobs, contribute to their communities,” she said.

Clinton herself has been a target of fake news, with Internet postings claiming that a pizza restaurant in Washington was fronting a child sex ring run by Clinton.

On Sunday, a North Carolina man wielding an assault rifle fired a gun inside the restaurant, located in northwest Washington just a few miles from Thursday’s ceremony, according to police, who said the suspect told them he had come to “investigate” a fake news report.

Clinton’s appearance at the Thursday event, packed with mostly Democratic elected officials including Vice President Joe Biden, was greeted with a standing ovation and raucous applause.

Clinton, also a former senator who served with Reid, made a wry reference to the relatively low profile she has kept since Republican Donald Trump won the Nov. 8 presidential election, referring to “a few weeks of taking selfies in the woods.”

She indirectly acknowledged her defeat as she began her tribute to Reid: “This is not exactly the speech at the Capitol I hoped to be making after the election.”

Mrs. “I landed under sniper fire” Clinton is one big reason why the liberal media, and Liberal’s in general are illegitimate and untrustworthy. But hey, just keep pretending that it wasn’t the failing Liberal ideology that crushed Democrats at every level of government, that it wasn’t 8 years of a failed Presidency that divided this nation like we were back in the 60’s, that it wasn’t the Liberal lies constantly being spewed on CNN and MSNBC (and here) and that is wasn’t that Liberal’s have proven that identity politics, aka name calling, has consequences.

You lost, now crawl back under the rock you crawled, your time has come and gone. Your ideology failed. Deal with it and quit your infantile whining.

If you think the “liberal” media is bad go take a look at the “conservative” media. More fake news is printed there then anywhere. We have a president elect that spreads them and his chief of staff last job was creating them. The only reason you say that Obama was a failed president is because of all the lies that you choose to believe in the fake media you follow. Had he been a republican he would have been called a hero. How much tax payer money did the congress waste trying to prove the RW medias lies?

ROFLMAO! Your an idiot of epic proportions. In just the last 8 years…….You can keep your doctor…..You can keep your healthcare plan…….Costs will go down 2500 bucks for families…..It was a video that cause the protest………The ice caps will be gone by 2013……..coastal cities will be underwater………..Polar bears will be extinct……..My chopper was hit by an RPG……….Libya is a threat………..the economy is great…….

Thats a short list Skippy. Maybe you should pick a better flock to run with, yours is a major failure when it comes to truth.

        1. bobnstuff December 9, 2016

You are typical WRNJ. Had the healthcare plan go as originally written his statement would have been true but after the republicans demanded all those changes and then still didn’t vote for it all bets were off. As far as it was the video, the mastermind of the attack said it was, I guess you missed that little fact. As far as Obama’s global warming statements that’s the fake news channels. Those were from Gore and Kerry made before Obama even ran for the White House. Just so you know sea level is rising and there is some flooding of low lying areas. No one ever said their chopper was hit by RPG another lie that you repeat. You have just proved my point about where the fake news is coming from.

I agree with you. If we had national healthcare like all other industrialized nations of the world, healthcare would be affordable. All of the industrialized countries of the world are in disbelief that we don’t.

          2. bobnstuff December 9, 2016

What I don’t understand is why the Republican party isn’t pushing for a national healthcare system. To have a healthcare that is largely pay as a benefit by businesses puts our companies at a disadvantage right of the bat. It increases our cost of labor and intern increases the cost of doing business. For example a Canadian lumber company can undercut an American one just because of the cost of health insurance for their employees. I guess the Republican party is no longer the party of business.

The Milankovitch cycles do not fully explain the current global warming. All reputable scientists agree with that. Granted a lot of the warming is due to changes in solar activity but the extent is not fully explained.

        2. bobnstuff December 9, 2016

          Mike Morrell said:

“You know, there is this view out there that she lied about what caused the attack, that she said it was the video.

I think one of the really interesting things that is in early 2014, the Federal Bureau of Investigation walked into the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and they said that we believe the video was a motivation in this attack.

Abu Khattala, who is the only person arrested, said that the video was a motivation. So this idea that the video played no role, which Republicans keep on repeating over and over and over again just isn’t –”

You forgot to mention the ransom that wasn’t ransom.

Fake news is not so much a threat as an uneducated and disinterested populace. Thomas Jefferson warned of this 250 years ago, and was a major reason he supported public education.
Agent Orange claims to have saved 2200 jobs using threats and cajoling and it’s accepted as fact, when the reality is that Mike Pence bought 730 jobs until sometime next year with $7 million Indiana taxpayer dollars. When Carrier finally closes that plant next year, Pence will have purchased exactly zero jobs for the $7 million and left the Indiana legislature looking at a sales tax increase to pay for the teachers Pence left in the lurch.
But hey, it’s the GOP. Fire the teachers. They’re not needed in the fact-free GOP world.

Many of those same “journalsits” also conspired to give Obama favorable coverage:
