Trump Blasts Nordstrom, Raising New Concern On Business Ties

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump’s Twitter attack on Nordstrom Inc on Wednesday for dropping his daughter Ivanka’s clothing line raised concerns about the use of his White House platform for his family’s businesses.

In response to the Twitter comment Trump posted criticizing Nordstrom, which has said its move was based on the sales performance of the Ivanka Trump products, White House spokesman Sean Spicer characterized the company’s action as a “direct attack” on the president’s policies.

“My daughter Ivanka has been treated so unfairly by @Nordstrom. She is a great person — always pushing me to do the right thing! Terrible!,” Trump said on Wednesday in his post on both his personal and official presidential Twitter accounts.

Trump’s comments underscore the complicated relationship that the wealthy New York real estate developer who became president on Jan. 20 has with his sprawling family business interests amid criticism from Democrats and others about the ethics and legality of the arrangement.

During a White House briefing, Spicer painted Nordstrom’s action as an attack on the president’s daughter.

“For someone to take out their concern with his policies on a family member of his is just not acceptable. And the president has every right as a father to stand up to them,” Spicer said.

Nordstrom did not respond to requests seeking comment. A spokeswoman for the Ivanka Trump brand declined to comment.

The Republican president’s complaint, however, drew swift criticism from Democrats. Asked about the Nordstrom tweet, U.S. House of Representatives’ minority leader Nancy Pelosi said:

“I think it’s inappropriate, but he’s a totally inappropriate president, so it’s totally in keeping with who he is. What I think is more inappropriate, though, is for him to refer to a judge who made a ruling that he didn’t agree with as a ‘so-called judge.’ Now we’re talking about the separation of power, not the thin skin of an incompetent president,” Pelosi told reporters in Baltimore for House Democrats’ retreat.

Senator Bob Casey, a Democrat, in a tweet indicated that the matter should be referred to the Office of Government Ethics.

In a statement last week, Nordstrom said it routinely cuts brands each year and that the decision to pass on the Ivanka Trump brand had been based on its performance.

A day after Nordstrom’s statement, luxury retailer Neiman Marcus Group also said it had stopped selling Ivanka Trump’s jewelry line on its website and a store in New Jersey, according to Yahoo News.

The move by the retailers comes amid an ongoing campaign called #GrabYourWallet, which encourages shoppers to boycott products with ties to President Trump, his family and his donors.

The president has declined to sell off his businesses despite calls to do so from critics, instead turning his empire over to his adult sons. Trump’s web of international companies remains a bit opaque since he has refused to release his tax returns, which experts have said would provide a clearer view of his business interests.

Since winning the U.S. presidential election on Nov. 8, Trump has targeted specific companies on Twitter. But this is his first tweet criticizing a business tied to his family since the victory.

Ivanka Trump ran a clothing and jewelry business bearing her name, in addition to other work for the Trump Organization, before saying she would resign when her father was sworn in as president last month.

ProPublica reported on Feb. 2 that the Trump Organization said Ivanka had resigned her positions but that it had not yet filed the changes. The Trump organization later said the filings would be done by Feb. 3, according to the report.

Shares of Nordstrom fell 0.7 percent after the president’s criticism but recovered to trade up 3.7 percent at $44.38 on the New York Stock Exchange.

Worth noting that he either used taxfunder-funded resources or tweeted this in the middle of his daily intelligence briefing.

    Or both.

You don’t really think he goes to those briefings, do you?
I think Alec Baldwin’s impression of Trump is actually smarter than Trump.
If you watch Trump flail around trying to explain EO’s or Foreign relations… or ISIS…. you get the very firm impression he knows nothing at all, so just says a lot of relatively unconnected words.

And you’d be absolutely right….he knows NOTHING at all about anything! Unfortunately, the so-called “smart” people that he’s hired to help him know just about the same thing….NOTHING!!!

Regrettably we can’t change the channel. Or even turn off the TV. You remember the lead-in to the old Outer Limits TV show?

Perhaps more importantly, did you see where Melania claimed the libelous story of her being a call girl destroyed her “once-in-a-lifetime” opportunity for her “brand”. This opportunity to launch clothing lines, jewelry and such would be like now. Or, in court documents, she stated she planned or viewed her status as FLOTUS as the opportunity to cash in on her fame.

Awww… President Snowflake is complaining again.

“WWHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA Someone isn’t paying my daughter everything I think she is worth…. Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa… They are not doing business with her because they disagree with my policies… Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.”

    It’s odd.
I thought political correctness was over?
I thought that money was free speech and Nordstrom can use it’s “Free Speech” any way it likes?
I thought Ivanka… having accepted a White House position… does not own that company any more….? Whooopsie…

And I thought President Snowflake sold himself as a tough guy? So why does he whine and moan and complain that everyone isn’t treating him or his family the “right way” or giving him the “respect” he deserves??

It’s ironic that Obama was treated to years of Birther lies, racist comments, and effigies of himself burning and hanging all over dumbf**k America and never overtly complained about all the bigoted frothing…
But widdle Twumpie doesn’t get treated properly so cries on Twitter… Every. Damn. Day.

Awww… Someone get the giant orange baby a tissue.

I agree, and it’s getting monotonous to say the least! It seems every day, he finds something ridiculous to whine about. And, his cohorts, Conway and Spicer just agree with him! If Spicer is so stupid that he thinks that Nordstrom’s made a “direct attack” on the president, he needs to have his head examined!!! As I said before, they have the RIGHT to buy or sell whatever product or brand they wish, and if one is not selling well, it’s good business to drop it! Apparently, 45 just can’t handle that and, of course, thinks it’s all about him!

Why does he behave this way? Because deep inside he has the same characteristics of every dictatorial despot in history. His form of malignant narcissism, and especially the arrogance of a pampered rich boy, convince him that he can say and do whatever he wishes, and the rest of us must accept it without complaint or the slightest form of criticism. Donald is the personification of a 21st century Generalissimo. The only difference is that this time he is the President of the most powerful nation in the world, within feet of tools that would allow him to destroy the planet, if he so desires, in the name of national security…and vicious criticisms or actions against him or his family, including denying them the business opportunities they are entitled to pursue regardless of ethics or the expectations of the Office he holds.

I really think he had no idea ever what the office of the president was. He never knew about separation of powers. He thought if he became president he’d have a platform to say, do, and act how ever he wanted, and that he could easily enrich himself and his family like dictators do. I see no evidence where he showed any knowledge of what all this means or how our govt works or was formed

Right. The man has no clue at all what he is doing. He signing anything brought to him without knowing what he is signing for, so long cameras are on, photographers are busy non-stop and enough people surrounding his desk. His staff have studied him already and I wish they will make him sign something that can end him in jail.

Agreed, and it clearly shows in the individuals he’s nominated for the various committees….none of which have an OUNCE of qualifications for the position they’ve been nominated for. Their only saving grace is that they gave BIG money to 45’s campaign!

He was either unaware of the separation of powers, the scope of authority of the Executive Branch, and requirements or expectations on issues such as ethics, divestiture, etc. or he is convinced that constitutional requirements, history, and precedent don’t apply to him.

Drumpf just doesn’t get it. His brand (name) has become permanently toxic to the American public. People are not going to purchase his or his family’s products or use their facilities. When that happens, companies drop unproductive items from their repertoire. Just read the TJMaxx and Marshalls are mixing Ivanka’s clothing in with their regular clothing items and no longer advertising them. Neiman Marcus stopped selling her jewelry – why didn’t El Trumpo go after them in a tweet? More to come…

Hmm, der Trumpster threatens to ruin a Texas State senator’s career, but Nordstrom’s is treating his daughter unfairly? I never liked Trumpf’s television show and the few times I watched it I noticed that his snotty rich kids were part of the panel. Here were kids who really have never worked for a living, but deciding who would win on that stupid show. Does Trumpf not realize he and his grifter family are fair game for public criticism since he never resigned from his companies. The entire clan views the White House as a golden business opportunity and, yes, we the public have to hit them in their wallets. That is what this bunch of con men and women truly understand.

No a president of the US claiming that a private business doesn’t have the right to drop a clothing line from their store. Nordstrom didn’t attack Ivanka personally, they decided to discontinue selling a clothing line in their stores. President Truman responded to a music critic writing about his daughter, he was wrong too.

Unfortunately, as president of the U.S., he does NOT have the right to make this type of comment. Apparently, 45 hasn’t quite let go of his businesses or even his daughter’s businesses! His actions on a day-to-day basis are getting more and more ridiculous, and I’m still waiting for someone to do something about it! Nordstrom’s has EVERY right to stop selling a particular brand if it’s not selling well. I’m sure this had NOTHING to do with 45’s presidency, but he has to blame someone!

The Trumps care about nothing and no one but themselves. Trump sees the presidency as an avenue to personal enrichment, nothing more. He’s incompetent, dumb as a plank, and ugly as sin. He likes women made fake by plastic surgery like Melania and Ivanka. There is nothing admirable about these people. They are just grifters and con artists.
